The city’s pub scene has grown up without losing its soul, and that balance — relaxed yet considered, local yet ambitious — is exactly what makes it so enduring.

Gastro Pub
Prahran

Mount Erica Hotel is a standout Australian gastropub tucked into the lively inner-suburb of Prahran, just minutes from Chapel Street’s cafés, boutiques, and trams. The hotel anchors a Victorian corner with its heritage facade intact, though the interior has been thoughtfully reimagined into a warm, character-filled space — exposed timbers, plush banquette seating, and the easy hum of a room that knows how to take its time. The kitchen champions seasonal Australian produce with confidence, moving well beyond the usual pub repertoire: think house-ground beef burgers with aged cheddar and house pickles, beautifully rendered roasts on the weekend, and a rotating menu of small plates that suits a long, leisurely afternoon. The bar pours a well-curated selection of local craft beers and Australian wine, making it a natural stop before or after a show at the nearby Prahran Market. An easy crowd-pleaser for both regulars and first-timers, this is the best pub food in Melbourne done without pretension. For elevated Australian gastro pub fare – book at Mount Erica Hotel.

A wonderful way to celebrate Melbourne Cup Day! Mt Erica was fantastic with the delicious food, service, ambience and hospitality with screens throughout to watch the races and Robbie William’s performance.

Gastro Pub
Collingwood

Goldy’s! Tavern earns its exclamation mark. Set in the heart of Collingwood, one of Melbourne’s most reliably energetic inner-city suburbs, this pub wears its character loudly and proudly. The interiors lean into classic tavern territory — high ceilings, bold art on the walls, and a long bar that draws a reliably mixed crowd of locals, creatives, and anyone who simply wandered in and decided to stay. The food is proper pub: hearty, well-executed, and unapologetically satisfying. Expect shareable plates alongside crowd-pleasing pub staples — the kind of menu that pairs naturally with a cold pint or a house cocktail from the well-stocked bar. Live music and events keep the energy high on weekends, and the beer garden out back is exactly where Collingwood afternoons should be spent. Whether it’s a post-market lunch on Smith Street or a long evening with friends, Goldy’s delivers the kind of pub experience that doesn’t ask too much of anyone.

Pub
Richmond

Corner Hotel has been a cornerstone of Richmond life for decades, and its reputation extends far beyond the suburb’s already formidable pub density. Perched on Swan Street, it occupies the kind of prime inner-city position that makes dropping in feel entirely inevitable. By day, it functions as a proper Australian local — relaxed, unpretentious, and genuinely welcoming, with a broad selection of tap beers and a kitchen producing satisfying pub food that suits everything from a quick solo lunch to a group spread. By night, the Corner transforms: the storied band room downstairs has hosted generations of Australian music talent, making it as much a cultural landmark as a drinking destination. The rooftop bar, when the weather allows, is one of the great under-the-radar spots in Melbourne. Whether visiting for a post-footy schooey, the best pub food in Melbourne Richmond-style, or to catch a gig, the Corner delivers every time.

Another excellent long lunch with friends. Two had the special of the day ‘ Masaman curry at only $20, 1 had fish n chips & I had Barramundi at 37 which was served with roasted potatoes & an eggplant & o live accompaniment- cooked perfectly & restaurant quality . All dishes were enjoyed and spoken of highly. The bar service was friendly at every round and one lady bartender offered to carry my round for me which she did. It was warm day for Melbourne in October so we chose a green velvet booth table inside in the aircon. Loved it!

Gastro Pub
Parkville

Naughtons Parkville Hotel has been a fixture of Parkville for well over a century, sitting comfortably on Royal Parade between the University of Melbourne and the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Its heritage bones — pressed metal ceilings, burnished timber, and a front bar that feels genuinely lived-in — give it the kind of patina that can’t be manufactured. The kitchen specialises in quality meat-focused pub dining, making it a reliable destination for anyone who takes their steak seriously: expect well-sourced cuts cooked to order, alongside heartier pub staples that suit the unpretentious atmosphere. Burgers arrive with proper heft, and the schnitzel is the kind that regulars return for. The beer taps rotate through a curated mix of local craft and reliable classics, and the wine list holds its own. Student crowds, hospital workers, and long-standing Parkville locals all find their rhythm here — a testament to a pub that quietly does everything right.

The finest pub experience in Melbourne - period. Excellent food, superb wine list, and attentive staff. If the music could be dialled down a little in the main dining room, it would be perfect.

Gastro Pub
Port Melbourne

The Clare Castle is Port Melbourne’s neighbourhood gastropub of choice, sitting in the suburb’s low-rise streetscape close to the bay and the Westgate Freeway end of the city. The pub has the easy confidence of somewhere that has always known what it wants to be: a proper steakhouse-leaning pub with a warm, welcoming room and a kitchen that takes red meat seriously. The steaks — sourced with care and cooked with precision — are the headliners, arriving alongside classic accompaniments and a wine list that leans into Victorian and South Australian reds. Beyond the main event, the menu offers comforting pub staples done well: think crispy salt-and-pepper calamari to start, a generous parma for traditionalists, and desserts worth saving room for. The front bar is a lively spot for locals catching a game, while the dining room suits a longer, more leisurely meal. For best pub food in Melbourne’s bayside belt, The Clare Castle is the easy answer.

Pub
Gisborne

The Victoria Woodend makes a compelling case for driving out of Melbourne. Set in the Macedon Ranges township of Gisborne, this classic Australian pub taps into the region’s rich agricultural surrounds and relaxed pace of life. The heritage building — all wide verandahs and pressed-tin character — signals an experience rooted in tradition, and the kitchen leans accordingly into seasonal, regionally inspired Australian cooking. Expect produce-driven menus that rotate with the seasons, showcasing local growers and producers from the Macedon Ranges and beyond. Slow-cooked meats, hearty mains, and indulgent desserts suit the colder months particularly well, while the sun-drenched beer garden draws weekend visitors in warmer weather. For Melburnians, it represents one of the better day-trip dining destinations close to the city — a proper regional pub with genuine character, just far enough away to feel like a genuine escape.

We booked multiple tables for an end of season celebration and we were pleasantly surprised by the level of service that we experienced, particularly on a busy Friday night. The staff took time to ensure everyone was catered for, received their food together and were continually monitored. The good was good and the steaks were flawless - well cooked, will seasoned and definitely good value.

Pub
Northcote

Northcote Social Club is as close to a Melbourne institution as a pub can get without a plaque on the wall. On High Street in Northcote — a suburb that has long prided itself on its independent spirit — the NSC has been anchoring the neighbourhood’s social life for years, pulling in a loyal crowd of locals, musos, and anyone in search of a genuinely good night out. The band room is legendary on the Melbourne music circuit, regularly hosting touring and homegrown talent, while the front bar runs exactly as a good Melbourne pub should: cold beers, friendly staff, and the low-level buzz of a room full of regulars. The kitchen turns out crowd-pleasing Australian pub food that punches above expectations — satisfying burgers, generous share plates, and the kind of menu that pairs naturally with a long evening. Trivia nights, DJ sets, and community events keep the calendar full. For live music and a great local vibe – check out Northcote Social Club in Northcote

Pub
Fitzroy

The Standard Hotel does exactly what its name suggests, just better than almost anyone else in the neighbourhood. On Fitzroy’s Fitzroy Street fringe, it sits amongst the suburb’s dense grid of cafés, galleries, and independent shops — a genuinely local pub that resists the urge to overcomplicate things. The interior is classic Melbourne pub: warm timbers, worn surfaces, good light in the afternoon, and an unrushed atmosphere that invites staying longer than planned. The food is reliable and well-executed Australian pub cooking — nothing flashy, everything considered. Expect great snacks at the bar, a rotating kitchen menu built around quality produce, and a drinks list that prioritises local craft beer and natural wine without being evangelical about it. The beer garden is one of Fitzroy’s more pleasant outdoor options, and the Sunday session crowd is testament to a pub that has earned genuine local loyalty. For Fitzroy’s favourite neighbourhood pub – visit The Standard Hotel.

Pub
West Melbourne

Three Crowns Hotel occupies a handsome position in West Melbourne, the increasingly interesting neighbourhood that bridges the CBD with the inner-west suburbs of Footscray and Flemington. The pub’s architecture retains its Victorian-era bones while the interiors strike a comfortable balance between heritage character and contemporary comfort — deep leather banquettes, warm lighting, and a bar that draws an after-work crowd from the nearby CBD. As one of the best pubs in Melbourne CBD-adjacent, it earns its reputation through consistent kitchen output: a menu anchored in quality Australian ingredients, executed with enough care to satisfy diners who expect more than the standard pub spread. The drinks selection — craft beer, Australian wine, and a thoughtful cocktail menu — suits the relaxed-but-considered atmosphere. Whether it’s a quick midweek dinner or a longer weekend session, Three Crowns consistently delivers one of the better pub dining experiences on Melbourne’s inner-city fringe.

Pub
Brighton

Hotel Brighton is the kind of pub that bayside suburbs are built around. In Brighton, one of Melbourne’s more polished southern suburbs, it serves as a reliable anchor for the local community — a place where families gather for Sunday lunch, locals stop in after a walk along the foreshore, and visitors discover why Melbourne’s pub culture extends so far beyond the inner suburbs. The room has the easy familiarity of a well-worn local: comfortable, unhurried, and naturally welcoming. The kitchen produces classic Australian pub food with confidence — expect well-executed schnitzels, satisfying burgers, and a rotating specials board that reflects the seasons. The drinks menu covers the essentials competently, with a selection of tap beers and wines suited to the relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. For those exploring the best pubs in Melbourne’s south, Hotel Brighton is the natural first stop.

Richmond

Mt View Hotel adds another strong entry to Richmond’s impressive pub roster — a suburb that already lays claim to the highest density of pubs in Melbourne. Sitting in the middle of Richmond’s Victorian streetscape, Mt View has the kind of unpretentious local energy that makes it an easy choice before or after an MCG day out. The interior retains a classic pub feel — high ceilings, a generous front bar, and a back room that suits larger groups and longer occasions. The food is reliably satisfying Australian pub fare: crowd-pleasing classics done without fuss, served promptly in a room that prioritises atmosphere over fine dining aspirations. The tap selection covers the familiar favourites alongside a rotation of craft options, and the staff know how to run a busy service without losing their warmth. Mt View might not be the loudest voice in Richmond’s crowded pub conversation, but it’s one of the most consistent.
