I have been eating meals prepared by Fritz since Cafe Roval in Potomac. Unfortunately, last night’s experience didn’t match past experiences. Drinks and the Caesar salad were great. But, the entrees were so/so. The beef medallions were bland and the risotto was a little heavy/pasty. Also, the service could have been more attentive, so we didn’t stay for dessert. Matisse has always been special. Will try again.

Party of 4 at 6:30. We ordered calamari for the table to start. Then salads next. Then entrees. Waitress brought 2 people their salads. At the same time she brought the other 2 people the calamari ( which she split into 2 plates). We explained the incorrect timing and serving. She took the calamari back. The first 2 people finished their salads. The second 2 people waited for their salads and kept asking where their were . The waitress said they were being made. After 20 minutes we finally canceled the salads. Then she brought out the calamari. Two of had the special swordfish puttanesca and the fish was overcooked and dry. We have dined at Matisse frequently and this was the worse experience.

Matisse is our go-to whenever we've been away from fine dining for too long. Great care clearly goes into the food preparation and presentation. I was especially impressed with how tender the grilled octopus was. Even the accompanying julienned vegetables were delightful - vaguely Asian, almost like eggroll filling. Service was well-timed and inobtrusive. On a Sunday it's less crowded and easy to find street parking.
