Barley Mac Ratings and Reviews
Came to town to visit for the weekend from New York. Found this restaurant on Yelp and made a reservation because it had a lot of good reviews. It was definitely not a let down. All the food was absolutely delicious. I had the lobster paperdelle ala carbonara (the lobster was slightly over cooked but tasted delicious anyway) and my grandmother had the salmon. She said it was light and delicious but a good sized portion. The dessert was great. She had chocolate gelato which was incredible and I had the lemon meringue taste which was delicious. Great service as well. Will absolutely recommend to people if they come to the DC area. A little bit on the expensive side but a great meal nonetheless.
Food is always great here and so are the drinks. This particular time I went we sat outdoors. It got dark quickly and we couldn't see the menus. I wish there were more lights around to see across the table. At one point I took out my phone and used it as a flash light. When my food came, I couldn't see what I was stabbing with my fork. This has happened before at the bar-side indoors. I recommend a booth if you want to see. The server wasn't around when we needed him and he walked away when we were ready to order. I would go back again for the food and drinks. Noise level outside is usually lower than inside.
Pleasantly surprised by Barley Mac. Had walked by many times while running errands, finally got a chance to have lunch and brought my office with me. Service was spot-on, thoughtful and perfect. Food was just as ordered and quite delicious. We sat outside and enjoyed a great fall day. Couldn't have been much better.
We ate at Barley Mac while in DC for the weekend. It was a perfect place for an early dinner after a day of sightseeing and walking around the city. The outside seating was very pleasant and the waiter was very friendly and attentive. We would definitely go back when we are in the city again.
Great atmosphere and friendly servers but slow service. We were there over five minutes before anyone came by and it took probably ten minutes or more to get our drinks. Our server was great once he came by. The food ranged from average to excellent. Crab cakes which could have been excellent fell far short with bits of shell in the mix. I had heard mixed reviews on the service before going but only rave reviews on the food. It's up in the air if I would go back again.
I am really sorry to say that my recent meal at Barley Mac was pretty disappointing. I had a crab cake sandwich which was extremely over-priced for what it was $19 - it was really ordinary - didn't taste fresh and lots of filler and I certainly won't have that again. The $3 mimosas for brunch are very good value. I so want to like this place as it's one of my local restaurants - and I have had a good meal there in the past - but not this last time.
The food was good. However there was a massive sized bone chunk in my husband's goat tacos. Big enough that he could have seriously choked. They didn't make us pay for that entree and gave us a free dessert. However, I'm cautious about the food there now. Went there once before and had no issues and my flank steak was delicious.
Sunday brunch visit. First time.
Parking on street is free & plentiful. I made res on Open Table - - restaurant ready & waiting no worries. Friendly, professional staff seated us outside as requested on a fine early autumn late morning.
Table cockeyed, wobbling all over the place. This is a basic that restaurants just don't seem to understand. Get it right, eh? Who wants to eat at a table that is bobbing & weaving like Conor McGregor?!?
Service: decent. Had to ask for salt & pepper. More on that in a bit.
Food arrived rapidly. Chicken wing app, followed by pancakes, hash browns, short rib hash. Coffee & blackberry mimosa for drinks along with water.
The food is bland. It's just .... bland. Like the stuff you're fed on a cruise ship. The wings....lacked taste even with the dressing. Bleu cheese & ranch toppings came along with the wings...didn't help. We didn't bother finishing eating them. Put some Frank's Hot Sauce on these things, that would be a big improvement.
Stoked to dig into the short rib hash. Totally disappointed. Bland. As in nearly tasteless. What does this say about the palate of whomever concocted this yah-yah? Asked for salt & pepper for the first time in years just to try to season this stuff up. To no avail. Didn't bother finishing this caloric mess.
Pancakes served without butter, had to ask for the butter.
$48.95 for a brunch / brekky that, honestly, isn't worth putting on plates. You could cook tastier stuff in your over-priced rental in Clarendon. Or just go to Edith's Diner on Columbia Pike - - at least there you know you'll receive the cholesterol you crave at a price that satisfies.
I wouldn't return here for this cruise ship food if you paid the way. Seriously. I wouldn't.
If you are into specialty whiskeys, this is your spot! And if you're not, the extensive wine & cocktail list will have something special for you. The food is amazing, fresh ingredients and well prepared. The service is wonderful. The noise level is quite high, but the high-backed cushioned seating in the booths of the dining area do help make it possible to hear what your dinner partner is saying. This was my second visit, and I will return. Highly recommended.
I've been here a few times now, and not once has it ever disappointed! From the outdoor seating, to the extensive whiskey list, to the cocktails, as well as the food menu - everything is amazing! I came here with four of my girlfriends, most of which had never been, and they were all equally as impressed. The slight con to it is the service. There's been some hiccups in getting orders right but really, it's not a big deal, as they are quick to correct it. Thanks to Scott and the team for creating such a perfect concept!
Overall was a good experience, but the food...the server was really excited to provide recommendations and said how incredible things were but the food was pretty bland. Lobster pappardelle had meat from two claws and a few additional sprinkles of meat but was "market priced" which was silly. Wagyu beef meatballs seemed oddly processed or like they came out of the freezer. That said, the wedge salad was really good and well thought out. Had breaded crispy scallions as garnish which were delicious and I plan to try to recreate at home. Drinks were also very good. Unfortunately, we won't be returning for a meal.
