About this restaurant

  • Great for creative cocktails
  • Good for special occasions
  • Good for business meals
The name WOODWORK pays homage to the intersection of our passions for wood-fired cooking and barrel-aged spirits.

The Woodwork kitchen is centred around our custom Grillworks wood-fired grill; while our bar features one of Alberta's most extensive collections of spirits, award-winning cocktails, and a curated list of our favourite wines to pair with grilled cuisine.

An Edmonton institution since 2013, Woodwork is located downtown in the historic McLeod Building at 100 Street & Rice Howard Way.

I started travelling to Edmonton for work three years ago and discovered Woodwork, conveniently located across from my office. It quickly became my favourite, and the running joke with my team was that I needed at least one night at Woodwork every time I was in town. Unfortunately, my last two experiences, including last night, have been incredibly disappointing. Our reservation was at 4:15 p.m. The restaurant was empty when we arrived, and after waiting for a colleague who joined us at 4:30, we ordered drinks and food. Despite ordering early, our food didn't arrive until around 5:30. At 5:45, while we were still eating, our server informed us that we had 25 minutes before the next reservation. About five minutes later, another staff member, who appeared to be a manager, approached us with takeout containers and told us the next reservation had arrived early and we needed to hurry up. The irony? We were out the door by 6:18, just three minutes past our original 6:15 two-hour reservation limit. All that pressure and rushing for three minutes! I completely understand the need to turn tables, but there is a difference between managing reservations and making paying customers feel like they're being pushed out before they've finished their meals, especially when the food took over an hour to arrive. What makes this worse is that almost the exact same thing happened during my previous visit. Two disappointing experiences in a row have unfortunately changed my opinion of a restaurant I once considered a must-visit whenever I was in Edmonton. If you're looking for something a little more upscale than a typical pub, I'd recommend the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald or Bar Trove. Equally good food and, in my experience, considerably better service. It's a shame, but Woodwork is no longer my go-to.

Great cocktails, killer fries, good service but the noise level was off the charts. Could not not communicate with my guests.

Very limited food options, service was quite poor (appetizer we ordered was forgotten completely, dessert menu was left with us and waitress did not return for over 20 mins, etc), parking is difficult. We chose this spot for our 1 year anniversary dinner and wish we picked somewhere else. The price of the food definitely was not worthwhile. Surprisingly few mocktail options. And tip options at the end were too high (started at 19% and approx 24% and 29% afterwards). Overall poor value and won't be returning.

Hi Jessica, thank you for your review and I am very sorry to hear about your experience. It was a busier day than expected and I am very sorry that your anniversary was affected by it. Unfortunately, being downtown parking is consistently a challenge and we are actively looking for solutions. Please know that the tip options that are on the screen(18%, 22%, and 25%) are not mandatory and you are free to tip any amount you'd like. For the small mocktail menu, if none of the listed mocktails or house-made sodas interest you, our bar team if very skilled and happy to create something off menu for you, just ask! Again, I am very sorry for your experience and I hope you do return one day for a better experience.

Overall a pretty good experience. This was a business meal with some guests from Toronto and Germany. I wanted to give them a good impact with a great Canadian (Albertan) steak. Woodwork has offered this to me before and I was excited for another go. The meal started very good, beer and wine with some fries and sausage. All was wonderful Lynn was our server and she was wonderful. 5/6 of us ordered the steak frites. The other was a burger. The steak came out after a very long wait, over temp and cold. We had ordered med rare (by recommendation). It came med well. But more concerning was the actual meat temperature. It was maybe luke warm. Certainly not hot off the grill. To top off the disappointment, the burger was the last to come out about 5 min later. My colleague was very happy with it except for the delay. To be fair, the management did make amends by help us with the bill but I want to say, I don't think I was successful in impressing them with the Alberta beef.
