Food and service was amazing. I will definitely visit again when I am in Chicago.
Excellent fusion of Indian and Latin food. We've eaten at the Vermilion in NYC and we were sorry to see it closed in NYC. Garlic Naan was crispy and chewy. The coconut rice had just the right hint of coconut. The duck was exquisite.
We waited over two hours for food. There appeared to be only one server, and she seemed bothered every time you asked her for anything. Would not recommend.
This place is really creepy. Unattractive interior. Ghostly empty when we walked in on a Saturday night Two tables in a very large dining room were occupied. No bartender or servers in sight. A host came up and greeted/seated us. Poured waters. Left menu. Disappeared. After 6 or 7 minutes in an eerily silent room with no sign of the host or any other employee we got the creeps and quietly left. Wont be back.
I love the food at Vermillion. Its inventive and very flavorful. I was at a dinner for 6 people and everyone loved it. The Ribs with a turmeric sauce was the standout for me. Fall off the bone tender and delicious. I really appreciated that the noise level was modest. There was background music but it was subtle. It made conversation so much easier and more pleasant, even at a large table. I would definitely do back.
The food was excellent. We eat here every time we are in Chicago - once or twice a year. The service is slow, but the dishes are prepared 1 at a time. Everything is worth the wait. We were the only table on a Friday evening. One table was leaving when we arrived and another family was seated as we were finishing. I don't know why it isn't a hopping place like it was years ago.
Arrived on time for reservation, restaurant nearly empty, but we were sat at a table near the far back, at the kitchen door next to a barrier that hides extra things for the restaurant. It was the worst seat in the place.
Ordered a selection of appetizers, entrees, wine and beer. The appetizers were good. The main course - tandoori skirt steak, arrived cold. The wine served from the open bottle tasted vastly different from the newly opened, assume the first bottle was from past day(s). Server mistaken on the contents of a dish, when asked again, server never went back to confirm. We then checked on leaving with the manager, who said server incorrect.
What hurt is that we had a special guest from Tokyo with us, and the experience could not have been worse - only the appetizers and the masala fries were decent. The rest of the experience - and that’s what matters could not have been worse. Not sure how Vermillion received the accolades it did...
Vermillion is no longer the stand-out it once was..
Very disappointing, the food was terrible. We had the tasters menus for Omnivore. First they only brought out one plate, how do you share one lamb chop? One scallop? When we said we wanted the second one it was obvious that they set the one aside while preparing the other. When we finally got it the one we as ice cold. Not that it mattered even warm wouldn’t have improved it. Tried the shrimp curry as well, not good. Would not recommend this place nor will we return.
Amazing cocktails, tasty food, great ambiance.
Really quiet night on Easter so we had the entire restaurant pretty much to ourselves. Latin & Indian fusion is a step out of our comfort zone but we really enjoyed the entire experience. The staff was friendly & helpful with food selections. All dishes were very flavorful. Loved the Lobster Portuguese!! Also, the churros were a great dessert.
I had to track down the host to remind them of my reservation, no one greeted us. There were only two other couples in the dining room and yet the service was extremely slow. Every step of the dinner took way too long for the amount of people there.
Then when we got the bill the server told us he forgot to add the drinks, so another 10 minute wait in addition to waiting for our leftovers to get packed up. It would have been nice of them to acknowledge our wait time and maybe comp one of the drinks especially since it was a birthday dinner.
The food was amazing as always, but we’ve had amazing service as well here in the past...so it was disappointing.
The food is nicely presented. It is an innovative blend of Indian and Latin taste. Delicious!
NOt anymore - after 15 years menu is tired and behind where sophisticated fusion is today
Lost its charm - restaurant is big and always almost empty so "dead" vibe - last visit was Friday night 7:30 pm
I was taken to Vermillion for my birthday dinner. My first and probably last time for me. Though the food was ok, the portions, just the right size, it was nothing outstanding for the price. The service was great! The restaurant itself is just too busy for my tastes. The outdoor furniture inside was a big turn-off . Overall, nothing out of the ordinary here. I will not be back.
Nice decor, not loud at all, drinks were good but food wasn't great
We had a nice meal at Vermillion. The service was nice and food was good if a bit over-fancy. We particularly enjoyed the scallops; the lamb chops in particular seemed over-spiced.
The Latin/Indian fusion food is full of delightful surprise, and the fancy cocktails are fun. At the price point, surely one of the best restaurant values in Chicago.
Awesome place.... very frndly service...flavorful food.... a must visit restaurant.... will b returning wit frnds soon....
Very disappointed in the service and how slow it was. Staff was rude. Food wasn’t great and over priced for sure especially Valentine’s Day!
Brought my vegetarian daughter. Vegetarian tasting menu was outstanding!
Service was sub par, food was bland and they were out of the batter for dosas which my friend and I both wanted to order as entrees. The methi paneer had no flavor to it. I will not return to this restaurant.
Me and family enjoyed eating here. Awesome service and food. We will see you guys soon.
Food was average at best. There was a loud party going on when we arrived. The wine I was served was spoiled. I sent it back and was not charged.
Our food was spilled and served cold
Mother food Emma’s amazing. Very special experience
Had a great experience! Creative, unique, wonderful tasting food. Attentive service which included explaining the ingredients in each dish. Would definitely return.
The restaurant positions itself as a “fine dining” one but starting from the greeting by the host, the seating arrangements , the wait times were ridiculously bad experiences. The price of the food is that of a fine dining restaurant but all the other aspects are anything but that. Will recommend against - particularly for special occasions. This is such a downer.
Great restaurant. We loved the food and service. Will recommend to friends and family.
We went as a family of 4 and had a great time. Food and service was awesome.
Loved the food. Specially, the butter chicken and lamb shank was very good. I will be back.
It was great night with my girlfriend. We loved the food and service. The ambiance was awesome with soft music in the background. It was our date night and we were so glad that picked Vermilion.
When my brother requested Indian for his college graduation/family celebration meal, I remembered I had been to Vermillion ~8 years ago, and its upscale, Indian/Latin fusion would be perfect. I wish I would have checked current reviews: We walked in at 7:30 on a Saturday night and were the only table in the place. It was embarrassing. The food was fine (thank god), with some hits and misses--and service was fine since really, there were at max 4 tables in the place. But the ambiance really gave a "dying restaurant" vibe, and sadly, wouldn't recommend.
The staff were WONDERFUL and some of the food was highly tasty which was encouraging. When we had the appetizers, I was hopeful. The drinks were pleaseant but did not seem to have the standard 1.5 ounce of alcohol rhat a cocktail should have. The entrees received mixed reviews. Two of us were underwhelmed by the seafood stew and the steak; some thought it was good. One person loved the lamb.
Overall, it feels like this restaurant needs an infusion of love. We and one other party were the only patrons. This is a shame for the place has been considerably more vibrant in years past.
Need more veggie dishes particularly for vegetarians
Main Coates’s over cooked. Steak and the lobster and the lamb.
Excellent food, great service! Our host Kadir was very pleasant, informative and friendly. Highly recommend it!
Great host, not much else to write about
The server was nice. The flavors were layered and decent. The price point just didnt match the food items. Our lobster in a coconut gravy came out cold the first time and the second time it was undercooked, for 35$ I would have expected more put of this dish. They seemed understaffed as well the hostess was waiting on tables also. Ot was 3 people serving the whole place. Food is definitely spicy if you like that and the flavors are unique. However, the cost just doesn't match the flavors or portion size.
Butter chicken was excellent (this is one of my favorite dishes). The presentation was great in the traditional lunch box. The starters and cocktails were very good as well.
