Using the finest ingredients sourced from across the world, Umu serves timeless Japanese cuisine in the heart of Mayfair.
Wonderful food and service; the sake pairing was excellent.
Fabulous food that was skillfully prepared and served. Great wine list. Friendly and attentive staff.
Really enjoyed the chef sushi lunch
There are not enough superlatives to describe the dishes on the Autumn tasting menu at Umu. We opted for the Sake pairing which we would highly recommend.
Bento is awesome. I will return. Was very busy for a Tuesday lunch
I visited for Lunch to celebrate my birthday. I ordered the chef's sushi selection (10 pcs) and the bento box with wagyu beef. One of the best japanese restaurants in the UK. The sushi melts in your mouth, and so does the wagyu beef. I especially enjoyed the fish belly sushi. The flavors are clean and well-defined, as one would expect from Japanese cuisine. The fresh ingredients are expertly combined. Without exaggeration, I had my pleasure center of my brain fire up when tasting some of the dishes. The atmosphere is very quite and relaxing, giving a shelter from the busy streets of London. The service is impeccable; attentive but not intrusive. At the end, I was surprised with delicious petit four as a birthday treat. Want a Japanese place in London? Look no further!
BULLET FRAGMENTS inside of food are COMMONLY found here......BEWARE!
I went to this restaurant to have a dinner with my close friends. We ordered the Keiseki course meals and sushi we wanted to eat, but the Keiseki course dish tasted terrible for a very expensive Michelin two-star restaurant.
A more serious problem with the restaurant, was that one of my friends found something like a piece of iron while chewing on one of the Charcoal Grilled meats. It was about as big around as a pencil eraser. We were puzzled and informed of this to a server working at the restaurant. The server initially thought it was edible gold and said it could be eaten. However, soon after he saw it closely again, he said that the piece of iron was a fragment of bullet.
Since the wild-hunted animals were caught with a gun, he explained that it was quite common to find bullet fragments while eating such meat. Another server reacted the same way. The response of these servers has embarrassed us as much as a piece of iron from the food.
Later, a manager of the restaurant came to us, but he started explaining to us as if he were not very timid. In Britain, he explained that if you get a bullet fragment while eating wild meat, you're lucky. I was not sure whether he meant that we were lucky because we found the fragment of bullet before eating or that we were lucky because we found a piece of bullet inside of food.
As we all know, the major issue was that eating bullet fragments could be bad for a person's health, however, they were neglected to mention in advance that they cooked out of game meats and there might be bullet fragments.
According to the manager, in the past, it had happened to some of the other guests, but everyone thought they were just lucky. Later, the manager apologized reluctantly to us for this bullet fragment which came out of the meat, but I asked him to leave us alone.
It didn't look like a manager-like behavior at a restaurant that received Michelin 2 stars.
Pricy but so worth it. Fresh sashimi and great service.
Third time to visit keep up the vg quality food..
Excelent chef Everaldo really very good
Again everything on high level!!!
An elegant restaurant in Mayfair with truly outstanding Japanese food. Very friendly personnel !
Awesome chill ambiance and excellent Japanese fusion food!
The restaurant has a hidden, private and good environment. The service attitude is super good, the ingredients are very fresh and delicious, can be said to be very delicious Japanese food in London. I'm sure I'll eat again when I have a chance.
The best Japanese place I’ve ever been to. Good quality, amazing service and ambiance.
Will sure come again.
Birthday celebration at the end was a very nice surprise
I was very dissapoited with this restaurant, I am not an expert in Japanese food and the waiter did not explain the menu to me. We paid £500 for 2 people and did not really enjoy the food. I did not eat half of the food .
Besides fantastic food it is truly a dining experience. A must for any foodie in London.
Very good sushi and excellent service and helpful staff especially on the sparkling sake which we are not familiar with.
Thank you for a great birthday celebration.
I’m definitely going back when I am next in town!
Great for a special lunch or even business lunch. Love the bento box
Good as always
While food was good and well presented, it was absurdly priced at up to £13.00 for a single piece of traditional Nigiri sushi.
One of the best restaurants we've ever visited. We seated at the counter. it was a wonderful experience. The selection of sake was extraordinary.
Very disappointed about the eel. Did not reach an unique taste at all and did not reach the level of a good eel dish in Tokyo
Very good quality&fresh food ! Incredible service, a hidden gem! Love it
Umu is one of the best sushi experience you can try
The sushi at UMU uses the best ingredients and spans from wonderful simplicity to exotic confections.
My personal preference is the counter as it lets the full experience from piece of fish to plate via the amazing elegance and dexterity of the creators.
It’s Sake list reflects the owners predilection
But it is possibly the staff that really make the place after all that!
The fish was beautifully prepared and very fresh. The presentation was lovely. Very cool location and ambiance. It is quite expensive.
Very good yet very expensive.
The best service we've had whilst fine dining. The menu was explained clearly, our waiter had lots of time for us, he was friendly and importantly, from my point of view, not pretentious.
From a vegetarian point of view, the menu is a little limited, but everything I ate had flavour, texture and style.
Over priced, not that special at all. not worth our time or energy. Won't recommended. There are many expensive AND excellent Japanese restaurants in London but unfortunately Umu is NOT the one of them.
Expected much better food and very disappointed
A really special restaurant with superb food beautifully presented. We had shashimi, sushi, tempura and red miso soup. The lobster tempura was amazing and the sashimi superb.
The food is expensive but exquisite so an ideal place to eat with friends who love Japanese food.
Food is very good enough as Japanese food, but not outstanding in comparison with other good Japanese restaurant in Japan.
Food was excellent no complaints there and the experience was surreal, personally I just felt that the waiters would come to our table very often.
Some of the best sushi we have had
