The Star Inn The City
Open daily from 9am til late for breakfast, morning coffee, lunch and dinner.
Was by far the best meal I’ve had. Such a lovely place for a special occasion! First time fine dining and it didn’t disappoint.
Diverse , interesting menu, accommodating
to food issues. Lovely
Excellent quality dishes, beautifully presented and served. Perhaps a few too many tables made it feel overcrowded but the restaurant was full on a Monday night so it is understandable.
This was meant to be a special birthday meal for my wife and our experience surpassed my desire. We can't wait to have another special occasion to celebrate.
We wanted a good traditional Sunday roast. The promise of sirloin cooked pink was the clincher. Fabulous food, lovely restaurant and very good waiter. Would recommend if in York
Had Sunday lunch x 2 and the beef was fatty, lathered in gristle and didn't make good eating at all. In their defence they took them off the bill but never the less...
lovely evening - sat outside for drinks first. Very nice ambience in the restaurant with good food and good service. Would definitely return.
The Star Inn the City provides excellent food, with excellent service.
Excellent food, pleasant surroundings and generally good service, apart from by one particular member of staff, a tall man with a waistcoat and glasses who was supercilious and rude. Very disappointing, particularly given the very high standard of service we received from all other members of the staff team. The impact of his bad manners on our experience was very negative and would make all three of us who visited less likely to return or recommend the restaurant to others.
Good was excellent, but there was not enough toast for the chicken liver pate. When we asked for more it took too long to arrive. One waiter was especially helpful. When we asked where the bread was, he returned immediately with it. It was noticeable that other tables were asking for extra bread.
This was our only criticism and we had a lovely time and would certsinly return on our next visit to York.
This is still a lovely restaurant - I hadn't been to for quite a while.
On this occasion I booked for myself and 6 other ladies who get together every so often for a catch up.
Most of the food was lovely, however the steaks all came out with cold portobello mushrooms so that left the 3 who ordered them sat waiting whilst the rest of us ate.
But the fairly young waiter dealt with us patiently and politely.
One, who ordered the pork wasn't entirely satisfied with the amount on her plate (too little!)
Mine & one other lady's sea bass was delicious and I never got around to asking about the 7th person's choice.
So, overall it's still a lovely place to dine, but it is at the higher end and therefore you expect a higher end experience, service & food.
On arrival staff seemed to be having a conversation between themselves and totally ignored us for quite a few minutes. Not a good start! However once they acknowledged us we were taken to a table. Service after that was slow but acceptable. The food was very good and made up for other things.
Outstanding! I brought 4 colleagues from London here for dinner on Wednesday and the food was amazing, service fabulous, couldn’t fault it. In fact, all colleagues agreed that they would love to come back, one even commenting that it was the best meal he had ever had - Thank you!
Was recommended by a friend who had eaten here a couple of weeks ago. We absolutely loved everything about it. Food fantastic as was the service and atmosphere. Had it been warmer I would have loved to have dined outside by the river. Highly recommend.
Great food served professionally in a lovely location.
When I booked 19days earlier...Had asked for a table with a pleasant view for 2 as it was our 30th Anniversary. When we arrived we were plonked in the last available table with a view of the crates outside the kitchen and every waiter brushing by as we were in the thouroughfare for the restaurant. It was obvious we were disappointed and asked if there was an alternative but were met with a take or leave attitude. Total disappointment was relieved by our attentive waiter who moved us quickly mid course when my husband asked as some guests left. The food was tasty but not special and did not live up to our expectations after reading some writing on the wall by the chef saying cooking is a way of life??! and to crown all the after dinner coffee tasted disgusting so the waiter deducted cost from our bill. NOT AN ANNIVERSARY DINNER TO REMEMBER
Beautiful decor, amazing food, great service, drinks were fab too!
Excellent food excellent service brilliant setting will be back
Great food, service was great. One slight issue with Pannacotta, which was explained and rectified incredibly quickly. Would recommend to a friend
Lovely food and great atmosphere. Service great too.
The duck was delicious, and such a lovely setting, it was relaxed yet formal
Lovely meal on friday night. Really easy to adapt the menu to my food interolances which is always a worry when going out but no trouble at all. Perfect setting!!
Had a lovely dinner at the star Inn. The food was fabulous. The risotto starter was exceptionally good and my Yorkshire pudding starter was huge! Our waiter was lovely and very polite and friendly. They even made me a cocktail which wasn't on the menu. Will definitely go back if we visit York again.
Excellent food and service- great evening all round
Lovely food, imaginative cooking, very fresh fish. A great venue for a special meal.
Had the most amazing meal - food was fantastic, wine beautiful and staff so friendly and welcoming! Definitely recommend to everyone!
We had a lovely meal here whilst staying in York, the meal and service was excellent, and they made it special by giving me small birthday surprise. It completed a perfect evening. Will definitely be back.
Disappointing compared to previous brunches here, menu reduced, service slower, food not quite as good.
We had a great evening with great food. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Everything very good.
Gorgeous food and excellent friendly service as always.
Couldn’t complain about anything made our anniversary weekend in York. Complete
Good food in a lovely venue. Would be better if you could eat outside
Really good. My belly pork was outstanding. Like really good. As was service. Slightly let down by an ordinary Rarebit. Under flavoured and cheese to edge of toast please
Superb service, food and atmosphere.
Whilst the dining was slightly more expensive than most, thr old addage 'You get what you pay for' certainly applies to The Star.
Well done a great experience in fine dining
Was caught in traffic and only 15 mins after the table booking was told your table has gone even though the web site says you have it for 2 hours, was put upstairs In the out of the way section, the food was naff very small portion chips/fries were over cooked were just like crisps the lady serving was lovely but the girl at the desk very short and unfriendly wasn’t nice really 1/10! Just been honest! I’ve been before was much better.
Fabulous in every way. Friendly and attentive service from the lovely Danny. Food was beautifully executed. Great location. Highly recommended
Great service. Lovely food & wine. Only cause for criticism was the children's yorkshire pudding starter which didn't taste nice at all. Everything else was spot on.
This is an excellent restaurant. I have eaten at the Star in Harome. Like the original, the Star in the City serves honest local food cooked and served creatively.
Lovely setting, really good food, pleasant and helpful staff. Husband had The Codling ( whale) and I had the lamb. Both delishous. Should we be back in York, we'd definitely be eating here again.
The food never quite gets to the bun gourmand level it should.. £4 for a peppercorn sauce that hadn’t seen a peppercorn, no vegetables
Went for my boyfriends birthday and we both got the lamb was amazing and cheese board after perfect.
