We went to the special night where chef Jay was in the kitchen and it was a great night. The staff were amazing and the food fabulous! We can’t wait for the next time he’s in the kitchen!
Sorry to discover that this place has gone downhill. The food was always simple and easily recreated at home, but it’s gone from dishes you might encounter at a stylish friend’s casual dinner party to things you’d get from a home cook who really doesn’t care about food: a mezze plate of bland hummus with dull carrot sticks, a mushy mixture of overcooked quinoa and soggy vegetables with canned chickpeas and a chalky poached egg, etc. I’ve never written a review of a restaurant before but this was really disappointing. And the service was indifferent verging on irritable.
Ordered the sesame bagel with the egg, Black Forest ham and gruyere cheese. Bagel was stale. Should have sent it back. Waiter did not check to see if we needed anything or if the food was OK.
Lovely dining in a relaxed and cozy spot. Food was delicious
The interior is very cozy, and it was the perfect destination on a windy day. The food was delicious. Perfect lunch portions.
Had a wonderful birthday breakfast in The Smile whilst visiting NYC from the UK. Have had many trips to New York and on this occasion wanted a special breakfast experience - The Smile didn’t disappoint.
Food was great! The kitchen lost part of our order but they gave us a drink on the house
this is the cutest little spot, great for drinks and apps or full meals, and super cozy feel.
The smile is an amazing go to spot for brunch! Our server was the blonde who is always so nice!
Food was great but service was fair at best.
We had a wonderful dinner there on NYE, was fantastic all around.
Great out of the way place with varied and good menu. We shared the special appetizer of scallops with lentils. Very disappointing - only two scallops, but the lentils saved the dish - they were soft and tasty! The scallops were quite smelly and obviously old. Told the waitress who just ‘smiled’ and did not relay the message to the kitchen. The balsamic roast half chicken was juicy and tender. Will definitely visit again as this place is a favorite...
It was a wonderful Christmas Eve experience! The food was amazing, especially the scallops! Would recommend this place!
Absolutely fantastic. Would not change a thing! :-)
Service was friendly but terrible. We waited much too long for everything, from being served water to being offered dessert. And the food arrived cold.
One of my favorite restaurants in the city!!
Delicious food. Appreciated that the manager accommodated my large group reservation. Cozy spot that’s good for a group - nice and quiet. Food was a bit slow, but totally to be expected with a group our size. Will definitely be going again
The food and a concern for the diner are way up there.
We had a lovely time at the Smile. The ambiance is so great, and it’s such a cozy and comfortable space. I ate here with my mother and sister who were visiting in town, and they loved it. Our waitress was really knowledgeable on wines, and she was very friendly. We loved the food and would recommend to anyone who’s interested
AmaIng amazing food. Quiet and cute. Oh and amazing food. There’s cheese in almost every dish.
Pre fixe menu was different than what was listed online which was frustrating, however, overall service, meal, flavors, and ambience was great. Good for a siblings get together for thanksgiving.
I chose The Smile for our Thanksgiving dinner because of the atmosphere and also for the menu. The dishes on offer looked delicious and indeed they were. Friendly service, cosy atmosphere, good vibrations.
We enjoyed our Thanksgiving dinner here and it was perfect. The food, service and rustic atmosphere made for an ideal holiday dinner.
The Smile is a great spot for dinner w the parents if you're an NYU student. It's convenient, lively and relatively tasty... But it will not blow your mind.
Very nice little quaint place great atmosphere. The menu could have a few more choices but I really like it.
Chill chill chill chill....
Great vibe . Healthy fresh food.
Not cheap but not too pricey
The service at this lovely restaurant is top notch. The food is very tasty though the menu is somewhat limited. The price of a glass of wine at $15 or $16 seems high. Otherwise no complaints.
Really great find. Food was comparable to great farm to table, with interesting mix of flavors, consistencies. Shared three entrees and they were all delicious. Great ambience. Lovely servers.
Great spot for a family gathering of 6 for breakfast. Easy to talk amongst ourselves, fast service, good food, and nice ambience. Will return!
met up with five friends who haven’t seen each other in a while. was fantastic.
We were seated immediately! And food was amazing. The mimosas were amazing!!
The meals and drinks are always very good at the Smile. However, I have to say the waitstaff and hosts were unresponsive and frankly not very pleasant. No one asked how dinner was. The hosts didn't say thank you or good bye upon leaving. I am not expecting anything special, but a thank you or hope you enjoyed your visit seems within reason. Especially for someone who has frequented the establishment many times before.
We liked the casual vibe and antique feel to the place. We went for brunch and enjoyed our food, but one of the side salads had no dressing at all on it. Also we thought the scone should have been warmed slightly as opposed to being served room temperature with a pat of cold butter. The waitress did smile when she took our order and did refill our water carafe, but never once asked if our food was OK. Overall, nothing terribly bad, but no reason to return either.
Lovely as always! HAve been there before for lunch and dinner. Great vegetarian options.
What a gem!! I took my husband for a birthday brunch and seriously underestimated how amazing this place was. Really personable waiters, great ambience and incredible food. Win-win-win.
My dish, the baked eggs, was quite tasty, and I think my friends eggs benny were fine. But the waitress reluctantly brought me water when I asked for it (or at least she seemed reluctant) and the espresso machine wasn't working, which is really not great if you're serving brunch. But the ambiance is nice and the noise level and prices are quite reasonable, so I'd be happy to go back.
Hannah, front greeter, manager extraordinare was amazing! From the “Smile” that greeted us at the door to recommending her favorite table, she was impressive! The avocado toast was delish and the salmon with cream cheese was some of the best with a hint of dill. We will be back next time we are in NYC. 😊
Food was pretty good, but service left something to be desired. Wait staff forgot our starter than mixed up the side of the main (this is why people should really write stuff down). But very cute atmosphere.
Nice atmosphere, great server and delicious food!
