Special Tandoori Chicken Curry
Half chicken off the bone, highly flavoured cooked with fresh coriander & spices. Please mention how hot you would like it
Food was ok, but very small portions. The bill was incorrect and the owner blamed the errors on the young waiter, even though he actually prepared the bill!
Keep a copy of the menu and double check your bill, as others have had the same problem!
Food wasn’t overly amazing but my sister really enjoyed hers, one staff member quite rude, felt like we were at military camp he was also rude on the phone. One table next to us sat swearing and arguing very loudly.
Always a great meal. Attentive and quick service.
Was for my birthday . And was a great meal thanks
It was a great night out. Good food and great service.
Good food, service slow and not really organised with the booking when arrived.
Was recommended by somebody as I was only visiting York. Was by far the best Indian food I have ever had and Raj took the time out to have a decent conversation
Food was brilliant and the service was great. Very welcoming.
Lovely food and felt safe in the environment. The staff were attentive to our needs.
There was no social distancing. The place was dirty, overcrowded. We left before we even ordered. As we saw 2 waiters pull their masks done luck their fingers then handle bills & plates without washing or sanitizer being used. Absolutely disgraceful place. Avoid at all costs
The food was cold there was no apology , service was nothing to write home about
Had a very nice meal at the Raj. Starters were mutton tikka and chicken tikka followed by mains of Morich Mach chicken Amli. Very tasty. Good service in a traditional no frills Indian. Tables were well spaced apart. Staff not wearing masks though. Would definitely return if back in this part of York.
The best Indian food I have ever tasted
Poor service let it down
Booked table for 8.30 ready when arrived but it was very busy. Seated next to entrance of side room waiters in and out causing a draft and people also in and out to use toilet felt cramped in been many times and think this was the worst time I felt rushed and No social distancing whatsoever in all we ate and left within an hour Shame because we love it there
Excellent food, good service and all for a good price. Will certainly be back
We couldn’t find anywhere to eat when we arrived in York on Sunday, our receptionist managed to book us a table at the raj , the food was lovely , a very nice find
The food was fantastic, the lamb was the best lamb we’ve every tasted I would definitely recommend giving this place a go
Absolutely discussed with the service booked a meal for two and when we got there we where told the booking was no longer available disgusting service. Would never recommend this place to anyone
We found this restaurant in the York guide, however it did not live up to the review. It was very tired and dated. I felt uncomfortable about the spacing of tables during covid so we were moved to an area on our own which I did appreciate. The main course was nice but that's all. Overall did not meet our expectations sadly.
Disappointing that there was no effort to help diners social distance. We were kept waiting for our table, the wine list was very limited and only had very cheap house wine by the glass. Food was average, nothing special. There are much better restaurants in York than this! Don’t waste your money here.
Booked in advance staff very pleasant drinks and food service very prompt and food was very good can’t fault it definitely go back
Friendly service. Covid aware. Good food
Amazing food, fresh and tasty 😋 Highly recommend .
We booked a table for 10.30 on line, had this confirmed to us on line. When we arrived for our meal we were told the restaurant was closing!! showed them the online booking and all we got was sorry that should not have happened. We had a good night and this ruined it. Happy birthday to me! Poor online booking management and very poor response when we turned up. DO NOT RECOMMEND
Excellent food. One of the best Indian meals I have had for a long time. Excellent value
Absolutey beautiful food, so nice nearly went back the next night
Excellent service and friendly staff.
Excellent food with fast service.
Not the best Indian I've been to. Average therefore I dont think I would go out of my way to recommend.
Kelly Holmes pic is bring milked s is up everywhere and a little deceiving because staff told us she visited the restaurant when it was under its previous management- tandoori nights.
Great food and service, will be eating there again next Christmas when we visit York.
The service was good, the food was excellent the whole evening was very special i had chicken bhuna which was the best curry I've ever eaten at a restaurant.. many thanks The Raj we will definitely be going back when we are in York again.
Great Indian food. Good value for $$ spent. Really enjoyed eating there!! Refreshingly affordable.
Disappointed that we were told that the card machine was not working at the end of the meal. Walking out to the cash machine spoilt the evening a bit.
Booked this restaurant because it was fairly close to our hotel in York and seemed to have good reviews. We did not rate it very highly. It was a busy evening and whilst the service was very quick it appeared as though the waiters were under instruction to get customers in and out as quickly as possible. I had samosa to start which were inedible. They were floating in oil and very tough. I tried just to eat the filling which was ok(Ish) but not very much of it. My main course was ok. My husband didn’t really enjoy his butter chicken. We have had so many much better Indian meals than this.
We first visited the Raj some 4 years ago on a weekend break. The food and choice of menu was outstanding then and we promised ourselves we would visit the Raj again. We were not disappointed. If you love Indian food you will love the Raj
This place is a lovely little find food was amazing and staff so friendly and professional, definitely visit again, curry is amazing and very flavourful!
Really lovely food, speedy service and friendly staff
The table was booked for 12.30... we turned up to find the door locked. However, eventually a member of staff eventually appeared and informed us they had stopped serving lunch a month or so before. Two unhappy customers walked away.....
Very helpful and friendly service. Excellent choice of dishes, all well presented. My chicken and lamb Korai was excellent.
I have eaten at 3 Indian restaurants in York this year. Sadly the Raj is in third place.
Food is not great, undercooked Naan bread and bland chicken tikka masala, how do you achieve so little taste in an Indian?!
Prices acceptable for city centre.
Ambience non existent, generally felt the place was unloved and the staff were going through the motions. Friday night, but not particularly busy - once the meal was served we were ignored until I prompted them to bring the bill. As we left several staff were happily chatting with, I am assuming, a couple of mates at the bar in the front of the restaurant over a beer.
There are so many other excellent options in York, I would not go back again. There are plenty of locals as well as the tourist trade, you let the former down at your peril.
Staff were very odd, loitering and not particularly friendly. The music was more suited to a club than a restaurant. I had booked but the table didn’t appear to be made ready beforehand. The toilets were very far away. The decor was distracting- changing colour liquid panels and odd ceiling roses on the walls behind the lights.
The food was acceptable given the price, although the description on 4 different vegetarian dishes was exactly the same even though they are quite different in reality!
