The Poet offers an informal yet refined dining experience in the heart of the Kent countryside. Set in a charismatic 16th century building, diners can expect food of the highest standards, made using the finest local and seasonal produce and lovingly prepared by a small team of chefs led by co-owner Petrus Madutlela.

In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 70 craft gins available.

World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!

A warm welcome awaits diners from front of house manager and co-owner Andy Urbanek and his team. We look forward to seeing you!

Food was extremely flavoursome and presentation was superb. Not sure about the Amuse Bouche popcorn, how ever service was good.
£436 for 6 diners is very expensive for non Michelin star meal.

We were released and headed for our favourite local restaurant
Even though it was a very cold day in the garden the Poet had tried to put everything in place for an enjoyable experience
Service was as friendly but professional as always but the meal was delicious and beautifully presented.
Worth the 4 month wait but we hope it's a lot quicker to our next meal there

It was a delight to be back at The Poet after so long. As ever it was a wonderful meal. The changes required for outdoor dining have been managed brilliantly. Thank you Andy and the team.

Lovely food and excellent staff. No one can do anything about cold weather but in the summer or inside the review would have been 5 star all the way.

Great to see Andy and the team again. The new outdoor area is really well appointed- warm, good atmosphere and accessible. Food quality is of its usual standard - we fully recommend the sharing beef . Lovely touches as ever like Andy picking gins that he knew we’d like . Wonderful to see them back.

The food was very good but it was very cold - not your fault!! But I am wondering if you could have 1 or 2 of the sides down until the weather is warmer.

Food was excellent as always. Harder to enjoy fine dining whilst in a garden setting. Although you are covered and there is heating it is going to be cold outside at this time of year. Dress appropriately and enjoy the food in the new environment! :)

Decided to have last meal out before lockdown. The steak was outstanding stunning flavour - you can tell it had been chosen by a South African, who seriously know there meat. The sauce was superb. Pricey meal for 3 of us but was very good.

I can honestly say that the food is the best I’ve ever eaten! For a set menu the chef turns out the most spectacular plates of food. My only problem with the pub was where we were sat was very quite so felt a little embarrassed to have a conversation with my partner Incase it disturbed the other guest diners around us. I hope Michelin reward this place with what they deserve, fantastic!

Thought the food was absolutely amazing, thank you chef. However, please be clear, you don’t cater for children at all. Came with our two girls, burger and fish & chips!!!!!

Ambience, poor. We got sat beside the toilets (so not great positioning anyway) but think decor needs looking up, just doesn’t match the quality of the food. Should be welcoming and sumptuous, nice low music too please.

We had a lovely meal however my steak was over-done. I didn’t raise it with the staff as I didn’t want to end up eating alone as my partner would have finished his meal by the time they rectified the issue. Other than that the food was excellent. The tarte tatin was delicious!
