The Poet at Matfield
In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 70 craft gins available.
World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!
A warm welcome awaits diners from front of house manager and co-owner Andy Urbanek and his team. We look forward to seeing you!

Amazing food and brilliant service. They offered delicious vegetarian options.
Exceptional as always. Had the tuna and the steak, both delicious. Great choice of wines and a perfect pint of Harveys to kick things off. Service, as always, very attentive and no delays between courses. Birthday cake on the houseSensible Covid arrangements.
Always exceptional. Food, service, ambience always perfect. So lucky to have such a quality restaurant nearby.
A wonderfully understated pub serving outstanding food. The menu is crammed full of delicious food - I could have ordered everything on there! Lovely staff. Highly recommend.
Superb food & a great overall experience. Zero complaints!
Never disappointed at The Poet. Looking forward to being back once again very soon, I hope.
Staff and Andy are so welcoming.
Thank you for the wonderful food and wines.
Outstanding food and experience ! Consistently so, never had a bad meal there.
Decided to have last meal out before lockdown. The steak was outstanding stunning flavour - you can tell it had been chosen by a South African, who seriously know there meat. The sauce was superb. Pricey meal for 3 of us but was very good.
An extremely special experience which we will treasure. The service and quality was of the highest degree.
Easy to recommend
The best Sunday dinner my partner and I have ever had!
I can honestly say that the food is the best I’ve ever eaten! For a set menu the chef turns out the most spectacular plates of food. My only problem with the pub was where we were sat was very quite so felt a little embarrassed to have a conversation with my partner Incase it disturbed the other guest diners around us. I hope Michelin reward this place with what they deserve, fantastic!
Highly recommend The Poet , amazing food and lovely staff
We often come here and it is a real treat! Superb food and wonderful service.
Lovely evening, both the food and the service were faultless, thank you
As usual a fabulous meal at the Poet, even with Covid restrictions. Fantastic food and great service as usual. We will be back soon.
Food was creative, delicious and visually beautiful. Fabulous flavours. Would highly recommend. Not your average pub food, far better but comes at a bit of a price.
Memorable food at a reasonable price, with good service - and with care to ensure social distancing and COVID protection. Highly recommended.
Fabulous dinner (as always). Good food, wine, service and ambiance
Thought the food was absolutely amazing, thank you chef. However, please be clear, you don’t cater for children at all. Came with our two girls, burger and fish & chips!!!!!
Ambience, poor. We got sat beside the toilets (so not great positioning anyway) but think decor needs looking up, just doesn’t match the quality of the food. Should be welcoming and sumptuous, nice low music too please.
Took amazing care of us, even with numerous allergens. A perfect dinner.
We had a very nice evening at the Poet, attentive staff and excellent food.
We felt very comfortable within the current Covid guidelines.
Outstanding food as always. The flavours are amazing! Very good service and good level of safety measures taken in light of the current pandemic. Highly reccommend a visit here. The food is truly excellent!
Starter and main were lovely, dessert which was white chocolate & pistachio délice was left to be desired on the other side - real let down after the lovely dishes! Staff were very good and friendly
Lovely atmosphere and yummy food A perfect Sunday lunch.
Love visiting the Poet, always top quality food and atmosphere.
The fact it is local is even better.
Thanks guys
We had a fantastic evening with delicious food and great service. Thank you.
We had a lovely meal however my steak was over-done. I didn’t raise it with the staff as I didn’t want to end up eating alone as my partner would have finished his meal by the time they rectified the issue. Other than that the food was excellent. The tarte tatin was delicious!
Absolutely the perfect place to go for a family lunch with the emphasis on food. A delicious menu from which we all three chose two starters in favour of a main course. so that we still had room for dessert. The wine pairing was a big plus, as the only wine drinker in the group, it meant I could still have a quality wine without needing to buy a full bottle. Service was friendly and efficient despite the difficult Covid-19 regulations. The restaurant seemed full on our visit which I hope is a good sign that it is being well patronised, even in these less than ideal circumstances, and I hope that continues as I will definitely want to come back.
Outstanding food and good service
Loved the experience
The appropriate Covid protocols were comprehensive, but applied in a sensitive way, which only marginally served to compromise the overall ambiance.
Our party of four opted for the three course set menu which, with both the food and service being exceptionally good, represented outstanding value for money.
Suffice to say, we are planning a return visit and, given our experience to date, we would highly recommend.
Outstanding food. Fantastic service - professional and friendly but understated. Great attention to detail
Lovely experience as always. Food was sublime and tby e team there are so ftiendly but slso so professional. The Butternut Squash Veloute was just georgeous!
We went for the set menu lunch. Tortellini starter and venison and fish main courses were excellent, delicately flavoured with interesting variations on the plate. Too stuffed but had to indulge finishing off with a variety of good desserts. The ambience is a tad tired but the service more than made up for it. Wish parking was a bit easier. Worth a drive out from London.
Wonderful anniversary meal today. As usual, the service is outstanding ; great to branch out from our usual sharing beef- quail, carpaccio, venison, halibut, cheese platter and tart tatin; all first class . As usual, we adore the Poet; Andy and the team make it all so special.
Wonderful, as always Birthday dinner this time. Thank you
As it was our anniversary it was a nice surprise to get a glass of fizz and petit fours on the house. This was much appreciated. We had the lunch menu which was very good value for money. I am not sure how the a la Carte would match up value for money. The only thing I did not like was the paper napkins definitely a no no in my book.
The Poet never disappoints.
We are always welcomed on arrival by friendly staff and the food is always amazing.
We felt very safe here considering the current covid situation.
Can't wait to return.
A charming old English pub with fine dining at an affordable price. What’s not to like? The food is amazing too!
Great place lovely food. Only area for improvement is that the food could have been hotter.
Lovely service although a tad rushed due to the two hour restriction but this is no fault of the poet
A really beautiful meal. Perfect presentation, delicious and good value. The vegetables were super as were the main dishes. Starters were outstanding and the wine was not aggressively priced. A really well balanced and delicious meal. Excellent service too.
