The Poet offers an informal yet refined dining experience in the heart of the Kent countryside. Set in a charismatic 16th century building, diners can expect food of the highest standards, made using the finest local and seasonal produce and lovingly prepared by a small team of chefs led by co-owner Petrus Madutlela.

In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 70 craft gins available.

World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!

A warm welcome awaits diners from front of house manager and co-owner Andy Urbanek and his team. We look forward to seeing you!

It was our first visit to The Poet after hearing many good things .. it did not disappoint! What a special experience… not only was the food exceptional but something that really stood out to me was the high level of service, it made it feel so special, small things like ensuring your drinks are topped up, not just placing your water down but pouring the water for you..the staff were all lovely and friendly and happy To answer any questions we had about the food and the Ways it was cooked.
I have already booked my next visit to the poet as a special family meal in September. I can’t wait already! Thankyou so much.

Amazing food as always - imaginative, beautifully cooked and presented. A small dining room but lots of room between the tables and fresh air coming in so felt very comfortable.
Never fails to delight! Would highly recommend.

This was our second visit to the Poet the first was a Birthday and then our Anniversary. On both occasions we were present with a complimentary dessert on a personalised plate for the occasion. Nice touch.

Nice enough but for the price (£25-30 a main) I’ve certainly had better food in the surrounding area. Also disappointing they didn’t have baby changing facilities, on the top of a toilet is the only option. Excellent service though.

Amazing food and service as usual. We are so lucky to have such a beautiful restaurant in our village. Went to celebrate daughter’s graduation, she was made to feel very special.

Thanks to all

We really love The Poet. Great menu, superb service, feels very safe with social distancing that doesn’t distract from the Poet’s ambience too much.

We came for the Sunday lunch. Ordered a red wine from the menu. Would have been nice to see the bottle before pouring. We had the beef. The trimmings were nice but the beef was very difficult to cut and chew, which was disappointing. We didn't order a dessert.

We have been a few times over the last couple of months - the food is excellent but no change in menu as yet. It is a shame that there is not different menu for lunchtimes ?

Another great meal at The Poet to celebrate our daughter’s 30th birthday. Delicious food, as ever, and so good to see the place busy as ever. No problem accommodating some dietary restrictions and so nice of them to surprise the birthday girl with a celebration plate.

After reading about The Poet on a blog, I decided to book it for an anniversary. Well, what can I say? I wasn't disappointed.

Spectacular.

First class service, lovely staff, well run, excellent atmosphere. Truly perfect. Special thanks to Sammy.

The food itself delivered as well. The starters- tuna tataki for me and scallops for my partner- cooked beautifully. I couldn't fault it. The mains - beef sirloin with several sauces and a side of truffle mac & cheese - was cooked to perfection. Dessert melted in the mouth.

No faults, just a little slice of heaven.

A wonderful lunch. We were made very welcome, service was attentive but not intrusive, very friendly staff. Superb food beautifully prepared and cooked, including a sensational palate cleanser quenelle of fabulous basil sorbet at the end of our main course. Sadly too full to have pudding, which would have resulted in complete inability to do anything else for the rest of the day!

The Poet, in the main is a very excellent place to enjoy a romantic evening meal.

The food, service and value are excellent.

The only minor issue is that the steps to enter the front door are almost impossible to negotiate with a wheelchair. The staff were understanding and prepared to help but a ramp would have been more convenient.
