The Grill on the Alley - Chicago
Since opening in June 2000, this high-end steak and seafood house has made its mark on Chicago with locals, and tourists alike. The Grill has become one of the most popular places to gather for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and all types of special occasions. Located on the floor level of the Westin Hotel, The Grill on the Alley is conveniently located in the heart of downtown Chicago with easy access to the McCormick Place Convention Center, shops, museums and theaters.
Food was great. Location perfect for our date at the Broadway Playhouse. Service excellent. Will come back again!
We go there regularly. Consistently good. My favorite dish is no longer on the menu, big bummer (shrimp pomodoro). Be sure to ask for the bar menu for more choices.
Our waiter was from Ecuador and we enjoyed talking to him about their food. We’re going there next spring. Every one of the staff was very friendly and the food was great. I highly recommend this restaurant
My waiter was wonderful- I wish I had his name to praise him specifically!
Construction at the restuarant interrupted our meal. It was so intense that our seats were vibrating. The staff could not have been nicer and offered to move us, but at that point, we were nearly finished with our meal and in a time crunch. We would certainly recommend post construction.
I have recommended to friend's of mine to eat here when they go to Chicago. I have never had a bad meal here. I found it by accident and have loved it ever since.
I read the reviews and many were below satisfactory however some people are more critical so I decided to give this place a go. The service was very slow for starters. We sat in the bar area at a high top table. Our server was okay- at best. I order a filet medium well and it was over cooked and it lacked flavor! The wine I requested was out of stock. I felt like everything was over priced. I over heard a bar tender say to another guest that this restaurant accommodates the hotel guests which would explain why it takes a long time to get mediocre food. I really wanted a good steak. I wouldn’t recommend this place if you’re hungry. A good place to grab a quick drink, if they have it in stock
Delightful meal and outstanding service.
Great food very nice staff
First time dining here. We frequent their location back home in San Jose. That one is the best, so I thought I would try this location. Good but doesn’t measure up to San Jose location. Lobster bisque was okay. Filet Mignon was cooked perfectly, but had been salted too heavily (manageable though). Mashed potatoes were delicious. Decent selection of wines by the glass, but significantly fewer choices than in California. Great service!
This is in a location in an elegant setting. The food and service were excellent. How nice to have a leisurely brunch in a sophisticated setting where it was quiet enough to carry on a normal conversation.
I sat outside on a beautiful early evening and was the only diner out there ... the service was so slow and very mediocre. Never filled my water or refreshed my iced tea etc. The food was good, I had a Caesar salad and the Halibut which was $40 and not worth it for the portion size and little to no vegetables on the plate. It was just a nice day and I enjoyed my early dinner outside... but just fair.
What a major disappointment. The entrees are very expensive, yet, there was nothing extraordinary about the meal. My wife ordered salmon and it was very dry and over cooked.
Normally, when you order a bottle of white wine, the waiter asks if it needs to be chilled and will periodically check to see if the glasses need to be refilled. Not here. Another example of substandard service was when my wife and I ordered a shared dessert. We were expecting the server to bring smaller plates so we could each take a portion without reaching to the center of the table. Again, there was no attention to detail.
An excellent choice for Saturday night, or any night. The bar is causal with the usual array of televisions, and the large seating area offers some intimate booths. The food is very good. We’d come back again to sample more of the choices.
It took over 1 1/2 hours to get our food. We were told the kitchen messed something up. The under-brick chicken was half the size shown on the website, our mashed potatoes were not hot and glue-like, the fries were oily, the steak was ordered medium-well and came out medium-rare in spots and well in other spots. The noise was loud due to a bar darn near in the dining area and connected to a hotel lobby. You have to enter the hotel lobby to use the restroom. The place had an odor to me, seemed musty. I ended up with a splitting headache from the noise, the wait for the food, and disappointment. If they messed up our order, they should have been bringing us free appetizers to hold us over, because their mess up is not our fault. Food and service were poor. We will not be returning at all.
A hidden gem. The perfect place when you want to talk to your guests. The service is attentive and respectful. A gluten-free request was managed with great care, actually sharing the ingredients list with the guest.
Brussel Sprouts were undercooked and frankly unchewable. Mashed potatoes felt burnt. Filets were really good, though.
Had two of my grandchildren with us and they don’t like anything, but both really enjoyed their dinner
It was great. There were some delays but It was very refreshing for them to acknowledge and take off from the bill. I will definitely come back more often.
we love this place. always wonderful food and service. great menu. it is a neighborhood gem.
Food wasn’t that good. Steaks came out and went back and came out again not as requested. Food didn’t taste freshly made. More like premade and heated up. Service was excellent though. Made up for the kitchens lack of quality. Overpriced for the quality. Eat out often and know quality. This wasn’t there. The management made up for it with discounting the bill. Just being honest with the quality and great service.
Great atmosphere and family friendly. That's always a plus because son is a pretty active kid!
Our meal was delicious and the server was very kind and knowledgeable - overall great experience!
We love this place because they do all they can to accommodate our every need. The food and service are consistently great. The atmosphere is quiet and great for conversations. It is a fabulous place with fabulous food.
The chicken pot pie is fantastic, but it's huge..much better to share with a friend and get a salad to share as well. So rich and decadent!
Great service. Delicious food. Great place. Can't complain...
Great place, great service, very clean, polite servers, great location.
Love the breakfast the best. Fresh food.
The appetizers were really great we had the spinach dip and crabcakes. But our entrees feel short. The chicken dishes and the creamed spinach were a little salty and then the bread that they have with your appetizer was super hard and the butter wasn't soft and was garnished with salt.
Easter Brunch had a great selection
Wide selection of food and wine and specialty drinks, great ambiance, great service.

I have always loved dining at The Grill on the Alley. I ate there on consecutive nights this week as it was in the lobby of the hotel I was staying at. The service was and always has been terrific. The quality of the food is superb. Everything I had and what my friends ordered was great: Wedge Salad, Filet, Whitefish, Chicken Piccata, Cheeseburger and of course Key Lime Pie!
Great spot for lunch on Michigan ave
As always, the service was impeccable, the dinner was great.
Tomahawk porkchop was prepared perfectly!
CeCe was an awesome waiter! He and the team made the experience for us. We will be back and we will recommend you to our friends. Thank you
Very disappointed that you have decided to discontinue the prime rib on Friday nights. We used to plan our visits with guests specifically on Friday nights.
