The Gate Hammersmith
Perfect place to eat & catch up with friends - menu is outstanding!
Lovely and friendly service. Great ambience and lighting. Delicious food.
Good food, waiters are coming to the table non stop which is a little annoying when trying to have a conversation with someone
The smell of stale oil and toilets on entry is an omen of things to come. As was the Middle of the road rock music. We had a starter of Stuffed courgette flower £9 which had a odd paste like quality in the mouth, (frozen ?) My Red Thai curry £14.50 was watery and over sweet. The miniscule vegetables, lacked distinctive flavour. The Aubergine Kiev £16 was cold in middle ( frozen ? ) The whole evening/ food/staff lacked charm bit of a downer @ £120 for 3. Needs New Owner/ Management. Someone who cares.
Great food, poor customer service
Not once were we asked if we needed anything
Portions seem smaller than before and menu hasn’t changed a lot. Disappointed with the starters in particular - onion tart was soggy and lukewarm and potato cake was quite bland. Wouldn’t rush back!
Nice atmosphere and great vegetarian food
Food was amazing and all dietary requirements were taken care of but also, replaced with some tasty and not something generic or with a ready made sauce. Extra effort really paid off and the food was sublime! Definitely be going back, hope all branches are this great!
Amazing choice of vegetarian food served in a wonderful setting. Service is friendly and attentive. Perfect for lunch or dinner
Opentable accepted booking - restaurant didn’t. ☹️
Bit of a mixed experience - my main was excellent (the mushrooms with risotto cake) but my partner's was quite disappointing (the burger) - for £14 it was just a veggie burger with small salad, fries were an additional £4! The baba ganoush starter was awful - it tasted like it might be off and not at all like baba ganoush. Service was OK.
I booked via Opentable and received a confirmation email, however when I got to the restaurant I was told that there had been a glitch in the system and that they were fully booked, naturally I questioned this and was found a table after some checking around, not a great start. The Thai Green Curry was watery and tasteless, although my partner had the burger and that was good. Service was quite poor, I ordered a second drink and it never came, overall a poor dining experience for the price.
My experience was almost five star. The reason I gave four is that the main courses were a bit overly-substantial. The starters had a lightness about them that was missing in the main courses. Other than that, all really excellent.
Lovely setting and beautifully presented, quality vegetarian food. Not my first visit and I will return
The food ever disappoints however the menu rarely changes so it’s very easy to get bored of the menu. It’s a shame that the service is bad and after going a few times it doesn’t look like it’s getting any better.
Lovely vegetarian friendly restaurant !
Friendship and Food @ The Gate.
At the recommendation of my friend of over 20 years, The Gate @ Hammersmith became the entrance to clean and healthy vegan and vegetarian gastronomic delights. From the Avocado and Beetroot starter, the Grilled Teriyaki Aberugine to Green Curry Thai and the finisher, Peanut and Chocolate-covered Brownie. Our long day soon forgotten by the warm greeting of the gracious waitress, Janette and the chef’s culinary creativity. My friend and I reconnected, reminisced, and recharged @ The Gate — vegan and vegetarian delights for the knowing and conscious palette!
I did send this email direct to the restaurant but am now writing this review after no response from them: Having chosen your venue for myself and partner and our 2 vegetarian friends for a special dinner based on some excellent internet reviews we were all expecting a top notch evening, and there were high notes. The zucchini flower starter was very good as was the mango cheesecake. However, there were some significant issues.
When our main courses arrived, the tagine was so tepid we queried with the waiter whether this was intended. Having disappeared to speak to the chef, he came back to ask whether we wanted “that plate heating up or a fresh one”. For speed, since the rest of us were eating, my partner agreed to simply having his plate heated and the waiter disappeared again. After 20 minutes, with all our main courses now finished and my partner having had an empty place setting throughout, we finally managed to catch the waiters eye and ask for an update. When told it was “nearly there” we decided just to cancel this dish - and were then immediately given the desert menu!
I ordered a vanilla ice cream and an espresso. Unfortunately there was a piece of plastic (I am assuming the edge of a tub lid) in the first spoonful. Luckily, I removed it from my mouth without injury and we asked for the bill.
In fairness to the waiter, when the bill arrived he did tell us we hadn’t been charged for the absent main course or the desert, but we were surprised that a more senior member of staff had not visited our table to extend an apology.
I completely appreciate the busy nature of the venue, and that errors will inevitably occur but what sets a venue apart is how it deals with such events - the lack of communication, timing issues and lack of apology are at least as important as the removal of the cost of substandard dishes from the bill.

Great food, relaxed atmosphere but incredible food, not stuffy but great food and incredible options
Nice ambiance, service a little slow but did not spoil the meal
One of my favourite restaurants
Food always so fresh and so delicious !!
Will always be a regular here
Had a date night at the Gate. The food was good but was missing a bit of a kick. I had the burger while my date had the tortillas. We got the three course special - was a lot of food so definitely think price wise was worth it; neither of us were able to finish it all. The desserts were good, especially liked the Creme brûlée. The service was a bit slow but at same time it was nice as didn’t feel rushed. The venue is a bit odd on 2nd floor of a complex.
Absolutely loved our experience at The Gate. Staff were lovely, food was incredible - will definitely be going back!
Food was simply amazing and enjoyed by all in company.Presentation of food excellent
Nice restaurant however the evening was let down by poor service. We arrived at 6.15pm and didn’t get served mains until 7.45pm due to a mix up with the orders. We attended a show at 8pm so couldn’t finish and had to leave. Other tables that came later were served and finished before we got our mains. I called the waitress to order drinks twice and was ignored. The saving grace was that the manager was as kind as can be for the situation and discounted the mains which was appreciated. Not the best experience I’m afraid from what could have been quite an enjoyable evening.
Pretty perfect meal and service to be honest. The food was fabulously tasty and the probs were just about right. I can't pick out anything I would change and I'll be back next week as it was so good 😊
Great little place, what a find!
Delicious food, attentive kind staff, spacious room, so handy for The Apollo theatre.
Easily dealt with my allergies.
I think there r 3 restaurants around London, I will be seeking them out! 🤗
I love this place. Beautiful artists studio. Light. Vegetarian food that genuinely is different. I go there because there is little other choice, and it always delivers consistently. However a couple of observations.
The menu seems very static. Little changes form year to year. The aubergine schnitzel and red curry are great. Been on menu as stables fo years and are great. The Salad my daughter had was lovely, as was the potato bake my wife had. However they were on the menu when we went last time, and they don't seem to have specials to vary it. In addition, I noted over the years little things disappear. They used to serve a pinapple salsa with the Red Thai Curry - it was great. Now it is just rice. They used to have a starter Mezze which was great. Now they just have individual starters.
The service the last three times we have been seems very stretched. One waitress looking after the whole room, one at the bar working constantly and a mgr. There are always piles of dirty glasses on the bar, and the waitress who was absolutely charming, seemed at breaking point.
I really love this place. I even wrote to them after last visit, but here is a public plea - I think with the expansion on 4 restaurants, you are losing touch a little and churning the same dishes out. The accountants are cutting the lovely extras, and the front of house staff are stretched very thin. SO a message ot the two brothers - please come back, put some excitement into the menu again, and dont keep cutting the interesting bits. The food is consistently tasty, but it is losing its amazing dishes, and becoming more ordinary every few months. Please please, try experimenting. I want this restaurant to be awesome again, not just good.
Beer not cold!!!
The starters were exquisite but the mains were not to our tastes - the Wellington was dry and bland and the Madeira sauce had a pretty gross flavour, the beetroot burger came with a burnt bun, not ‘oh that’s a nice char’ but burned with a flavour that spoiled each mouthful (and I’m a fan of smokey / charred flavours!) generally the mains were not cooked particularly well which is a shame and surprising because the starters were exquisite, the polenta fries were the best I’ve tried and the desserts were yummy too.
Will come again, but think the main courses need a refresh personally.
Hope you don’t get the wrong end of the stick, I think the Gate is a fab restaurant - the service and ambience are top notch, just trying to provide constructive criticism
The Gate offers consistently good vegetarian food. Imaginative, tasty dishes served in great surroundings.
Hi, Thank you for your lovely review. We're happy to hear that you enjoy our food and décor. You're more than welcome back any time :)
Great vegan/vegetarian food super close to the Apollo.
Friendly efficient staff and food was delicious!
Would visit again.
Great food great service and pleasant all round
Excellent food - even for the non-vegetarian!
Had delicious vegan Shakshuka with scrambled tofu and olive bread. The restaurant had a really relaxed vibe and the staff were really friendly.
Were there for lunch and was fairly quiet, but the service wasn’t rushed or too leisurely. Would highly recommend.
Lovely restaurant and staff but the food was average , we ordered plantain to find it came in 2 small dry balls , small portions and overpriced wine , it certainly wasn't a £100 meal but great for a lunch or after work dinner .
Delicious food, as always. But, for whatever reason, the service was all over the place. Was it because they had accepted an enormous booking for a group of international delegates just before we arrived? Our friends got there before us but our welcome was shambolic as the staff were busy rearranging the tables to suit the big booking. And then the big group arrived and this meant there weren’t enough staff for the evening and there was a mixup on one of our dishes - which makes me think it was a last-minute booking....
It’s a shame as previous visits to The Gate have been brilliant. As I said, the food was brilliant in spite of this. I’d like to see a better wine selection including more natural (and vegan) wines
Went for dinner before a show - food was incredible! Would highly recommend.
Great vegetarian restaurant, food is amazing and very filling. Service is a bit slow but overall staff are very friendly and would definitely visit again.
Sadly the vegetarian Sunday Roast was already off the menu by 6.30 in the evening and the alternative vegetarian red thai curry although very tasty very lacking in vegetables, more like a broth. Assume whoever orders the food not ordering enough or they are pushing the margin by reducing the content which won't encourage repeat custom. Shame as everything very tasty and service excellent
