In 1871, the City of Alexandria introduced the Columbia Steam Engine Fire Company. The outfit initially occupied Star Firehouse on the east side of the 100 block of South St. Asaph Street until 1883, when a new station was built for Columbia just across the street at 109 South St. Asaph.

126 years later, Alexandria’s Neighborhood Restaurant Group relaunched this historic and beautifully preserved property as Columbia Firehouse, a sumptuous modern American brasserie and bar located in the heart of Alexandria’s Old Town.

Columbia Firehouse stands as a historic, beautifully preserved piece of Old Town’s heritage. From the street, the building has changed little while the interior has given way to sumptuous dining rooms on four levels, an atrium an outdoor patio and an exquisitely detailed barroom.

I have eaten at this restaurant several times and find the food good, however the exterior of the restaurant could use some sprucing up to include the entryway awning that is held together with duck tape.

The interior of the restaurant could use a good cleaning, freshening, and updating. The restaurant had a foul smell and the could use a good floor to ceiling cleaning. The carpet and flooring is worn and needs to be cleaned and or replaced. After eating at this restaurant several times over the past several years it obvious that the owners are not putting any money into the appearance of the restaurant.

I couldn’t think of a better place to have a great steak, fine California Cab and great laughs with friends. Exceptional place to celebrate a birthday.

We have been going to this restaurant for several years and were very disappointed with this visit. Our meals were ok but not outstanding as in the past. I ordered the Fish and Chips. My fish was good but my chips were soggy and I did not eat them. My husband ordered the Chicken Paillard which was also just ok. Our appetizer was French Onion Dip and it was good. We opted not to have dessert.

A portion of the Chicken Paillard that I ordered came out raw. It wasn’t notice until about 2/3rds through the dish. Frisée salad on top was also overdressed. Corn fritters were tasty. Server and manager were apologetic and comped our meal after we pointed out the kitchen’s mistake. Thankfully, the portion I ate didn’t make me ill.

Food was excellent, server was kinda weird...but food was really good. As a previous reviewer noted, the wine list is weak. The restaurant is dated. The carpet is really in need of replacing - worn and dirty and makes the restaurant smell like an old pub.

Birthday lunch for the boss. Sat outside on a beautiful Friday afternoon. Rico, our server, was excellent. He made some great suggestions that we took him up on and we were glad we did. We will definitely return. 😄

We have always had great food and service here. Jules was a great server and recommended items on the menu that we ended up ordering! Location is perfect...off King Street but close to everything. Highly recommend sitting on the patio while the weather is perfect.

The restaurant is very cute and the Ambiance is good. We ordered corn fritters and calamari both of which were over fried and cooked poorly in general. My husband ordered the prime rib and while it was tasty for the small amount he received along with some burnt asparagus it was not worth the $32 price tag! Overall would not eat there again because of the food which is too bad because the setting and place itself is very attractive.

I've been here before and thought it was very good, but this time it was clear that the staff was overwhelmed. We had a reservation for 7pm and received our meals around 8:30pm. Our waitress intentionally waited a long time to take our order. On the plus side, they did bring a second round of biscuits while we waited. Once our food got to our table, it was very good, but the portions were a little off. My husband ordered the fish and chips and the amount of fish in the portion just wasn't a lot. I ordered two sides for dinner and each of them seemed to be more food than the fish in his "supper" sized meal. By the time the food got there, I was feeling ill from being really hungry and ended up not being able to eat very much.

The food was pretty good-nothing spectacular but it was tasty. The service was less than ideal however. It took about 15 minutes for our server to take out first drink order, and there was a significant lack of attention to our needs throughout the evening.

We frequent Columbia Firehouse since the ambience is so nice and the service is always good. The bar area is very nice, you can watch sports, but it is not a sports bar. Atmosphere is more elegant. This time when we had dinner, the food was not very good, which was unusual, since we always love the food, the ingredients are local sourced and fresh. However, this time everything tasted saltier than usual, not just one dish, but all. Perhaps the regular chef was away.

Used open table’s special requests options to let the restaurant know it was our wedding anniversary. Clearly, they didn’t pay any attention to that (or didn’t care) as we were sat us in a dark corner in the very back of the restaurant, right underneath a draft fan. Every time someone enters the restaurant through the main door, this draft fan kicks on and if you’re sitting in that back corner, you get hit with a very cold draft. It doesn’t help that the restaurant is already pretty cool (around 67–68F). When we complained they said they were trying to adjust it, but honestly it never got any better. That temperature is probably perfect if you don’t get stuck underneath that fan, but if you do I hope you’ve got a light jacket or sweater. The waitress was not great. We were seated for 10 minutes before anyone came to our table and even offered us water. It took another 5-10 minutes after that before our waitress finally came to our table. I might have understood if the restaurant were busy but it wasn’t busy at all. The drinks were acceptable but nothing special. The food however was excellent, fairly priced and came out pretty quick so that was great. All in all, I’d say it was a mediocre experience. I wouldn’t recommend it for any kind of special occasion, but for a casual bite it’s not bad - just make sure you bring a light coat. Sitting outside is recommended if the weather is nice.

Local restaurant in Old Town Alexandria with hardy food. I was there with friends for Sunday Brunch. Kind of noisy especially with music piped in. Food offerings are nothing special but the portions are generous and everything is cooked nicely. Eggs were not overdone. Home fries were too salty for my taste. Craft beers on tap. Good desserts. Service was prompt in the beginning but we had to flag down a waiter to get our coffee orders in when meal was done.

We had good service (except my water glass never got refilled after I asked). We had the chips and onion dip. The chips were a little small and the dip was OK. The fish and chips - the fish as prepared and presented very nicely. The fries were too soggy. The coffee was so so. My
husband’s steak frites and creamed spinach were very good. Loved the history of the building and the ambiance. We will definitely dine here again.

We went to the Firehouse for my wife’s birthday and they did not disappoint! The servers were attentive but not hovering, the timing of the appetizers and apps to entree where right on time. The food was excellent! I had the prime rib and my wife got a salad.

The food here was great. We went for Easter brunch and all enjoyed our meals. The service was a little subpar, however. We had a reservation, and still waited at least 10 minutes to be seated (along with several other groups). Once we were seated, things moved somewhat slowly through the meal, and with a toddler speed is alwasy a factor. I would still give it a second try because the food was declious and the building itself is really interesting, but it was disappointing how disorganized the service seemed to be.

We dined here several years ago and food was good. Something has changed. The food was just not very good, and the wine list was terrible. We had 3 different dishes at our table. No one was pleased. Wine list was mostly Virginia and Maryland wines. I'm ok supporting local wines, but the wines we ultimately selected from the few choices just weren't that good. This restaurant needs an overhaul. I do not plan to return.
