The Columbia Firehouse
126 years later, Alexandria’s Neighborhood Restaurant Group relaunched this historic and beautifully preserved property as Columbia Firehouse, a sumptuous modern American brasserie and bar located in the heart of Alexandria’s Old Town.
Columbia Firehouse stands as a historic, beautifully preserved piece of Old Town’s heritage. From the street, the building has changed little while the interior has given way to sumptuous dining rooms on four levels, an atrium an outdoor patio and an exquisitely detailed barroom.

The floor was filthy. My shoes stuck The the carpet and the carpet was black. The table was sticky. I had to ask someone to come clean off the table. I had heard great things about this restaurant and was so disappointed.
The waiter was very good!!
Fantastic as always!
Best Wedge Salad with tomatoes, bacon and blue cheese I've EVER had!
Food was delicious, our waiter was very kind. The drinks tasted great. We had a great time there. The atmosphere of the restaurant was great for family night outs.
Columbia Firehouse is a great place to go for a steak. The prime rib was huge and cooked perfectly. My girlfriend's filet mignon was well worth the trip. Plenty of beer and cocktails on tap, and make sure you try the onion rings.
I enjoy Colombia fire house. The beautiful setting and Art Deco flair is so special. Our service was great. However I didn’t find any real value to the food. I found it over priced for what we got and we also had oysters that were mushy and flavorless. We didn’t enjoy them at all. I think we’ll try somewhere new next time.
Food was good and while the servers were very friendly, we couldn’t figure out who exactly was our server. We had about 4 different people coming by our table yet none were consistent. Anytime we needed anything we had to flag somebody down and then it would take a while to get what we had asked for (at least 20 minutes just to get a side of horseradish for the prime rib). It was also absolutely freezing in the restaurant and we ended up having to ask them to turn the AC down because we were so cold. We came during restaurant week and we got a great deal. The jerk chicken with saffron risotto was amazing but VERY spicy.
Great service, delicious food. Loved the outdoor seating area ... very romantic.
The steak is to Die for and the service is outstanding.
The place gives you the distinct feel of old town Alexandria was built on!
The restaurant was too cold I couldn't enjoy my dinner because I was focused on my goosebumps
Service was outstanding. Was catching up with an old friend and couldn't have selected a better spot. Good menu and great bar.
Service is exceptional. My wife and I love to eat dinner here for a date or special occasion
Food was great, however the restaurant needs new carpet. It is old and musty smelling.
Went for brunch. Corn beef hash was oily and the potatoes and veggies were over cooked. Children’s burger was hard and over cooked, we actually returned it and weren’t charged for it. My wife’s meal, Californian Benedict, was great. Service and ambience were good, just a little disappointed with the food.
For an early Sunday evening the service was incredibly slow. The server was attentive but she could not make the kitchen any faster. The food itself was ok to awful. I had the ribs and they were tasteless, dry and the sauce was unremarkable. My wife had the salmon and it too was dry and over cooked. The corn bread served with the ribs was dry and tasted like it was a day or two old. All in all a poor meal. We would never return or recommend the restaurant to others.
Servers hovered over table too frequently. Food was mediocre and wine prices were expensive.
We went for a quick casual brunch on Saturday and what a pleasant surprise. As tourist we thought this was going to be a tourist place but it was heavily frequented by locals and families. Service was on point and food was a great value. I had the burger which was a mouthful and well executed. My wife had a waffle which was crispy and fluffy. Our only complaint, and our fault, was the waffle was listed as coming with seasonal fruit. It had a generous dollop of blackberry jam on it. Should have asked. Nonetheless good, quick, tasty and service was good. I would definitely recommend.
Great meal, everything was perfect and our waitress Jules was awesome! Super helpful when we had questions and was on point with her suggestions. Definitely will be back
While the scallops and farro dish was wonderful, the risotto had very little flavor and just plain boring. Our drinks arrived just a few mins before entrees, likely due to no appetizer and an empty restaurant on a Saturday night — but still could have been spaced much better.
Very nice place with great character. Great service. Food was delicious and very fresh.
Dined here with another couple after an event at the Lyceum (5 minute walk) . We made a reservation (late, 9:45), but didn't need it -- the place was NOT full. I was surprised because it is incredibly charming. Maybe more of a happy hour place? Really lovely physical space. Staff was friendly but not polished, which is fine with us. Food was quite good, but didn't knock me over, considering the prices. Seafood heavy menu, which I love. Because it was late and the kitchen was not backed up, our food came out incredibly fast. The server was trying to put down our entrees before we were done with our appetizers. We had to rush through our appetizers and hand our plates over so there was space for our entrees. No time for a second glass of wine, we were moved through dinner so rapidly (good for my waistline, but not good for the revenue of the restaurant). Overall, though, it was perfect for our occasion.
Everything was incredible at Columbia Firehouse. Even though the birthday girl was too full for desert, they still went above and beyond to make her feel special at the end of our meal!
Waiter was excellent. Hostess was hesitant to move us when we said we were freezing under the air vent.
Food was average, not great for the price. The decor is very nice.
The server was great, but the food was slow to come out and the ceasar salad had more lemon juice than dressing so it was super sour. I would not eat there if you are in a hurry, but if you have a lazy night enjoy (just avoid the salad).
Steaks were delicious!
We went on National Fried Chicken Day - but they took the fried chicken off the menu I guess! My steak was nice, but companions “hot chicken sandwich” wasn’t. Cheese and hot sauce, oily, overwhelming. Pretty expensive. Our waitress was very nice and helpful. The space is wonderful.
The food and service were very good. The only negative was the temperature - too chilly - but the server nicely adjusted it when asked.
Good variety of food, food quality good, a bit expensive
Very good and we went at a good time! This was our first time there for brunch. We previously went for dinner for a birthday and had a great time.
We went to see the venue spaces for our upcoming wedding and it is perfect! But we wanted to try the food to see if we would like it and it was exactly what we wanted. If you need a unique place for a lunch and/or dinner, I highly recommend this place for it. Roger was great and so happy to answer all our questions. I am so excited for our wedding !!!!
Food was good the first time, but the second time I went, it wasn’t good. Service is great, but food inconsistent.
Columbia Firehouse is a great place for brunch or dinner....conveniently located just outside the downtown Old Town Area, parking is easy and the location is central to many Old Town activities with just a short walk....attended a special Scotch tasting event and the Chef developed a five course meal that aligned with the drinks....awesome job.... great service, great food, terrific ambiance...
1/2 price bottles of wine on Mondays added value
We have eaten at the Columbia Firehouse many times in the past. The food has always been delicious as it was this time. This was for a after church brunch with my wife and a friend. The noise level was so loud that we asked to be moved the bar area because we could not hear each other talk. I am 80 and my wife and her friend are in their mid 70. All 3 of us have hearing aids.
It is no pleasure to eat in such a loud environment as we are now finding most restaurants in Alexandria where we traditionally have Sunday brunch. Not only can we not hear each other, it give us a bad case of indigestion. Please send me suggestions for nice quiet establishments in the Alexandria area.
My husband loves the chili and baked macaroni and cheese they serve. He usually orders both as his meal.
Great ambiance and food.
Columbia Firehouse is consistently good dining. The service has always been excellent, the servers know what they are serving, and their recommendations are spot on. The wines sourced locally are also very good, and the servers will be able to make a recommendation. The bar area is also good and open quite late, we have gone there past 10:00pm and able to order a good meal.
Took my parents here during their visit. Great food and awesome service.
The food and service was excellent as it usually is. We love coming to Columbia Firehouse.
