The Columbia Firehouse
126 years later, Alexandria’s Neighborhood Restaurant Group relaunched this historic and beautifully preserved property as Columbia Firehouse, a sumptuous modern American brasserie and bar located in the heart of Alexandria’s Old Town.
Columbia Firehouse stands as a historic, beautifully preserved piece of Old Town’s heritage. From the street, the building has changed little while the interior has given way to sumptuous dining rooms on four levels, an atrium an outdoor patio and an exquisitely detailed barroom.

After we got sat, everything was fantastic. The server was very attentive, the drinks were always kept full, the meal was delicious and my friends and I had a great time. We will be back!
Had a reservation for 730 and were not seated until after 8pm, which was fine but opentable showed many available tables so maybe something wasn’t registering in the system?
All of the food was lacking flavor. I’ve dined here many times over the last 5 years and this was the worst the food has ever been. I was surprised actually as I’ve only ever had good experiences. Onion rings lacked salt, the seasonal risotto was overly oily and pretty bland. The skillet cookie was burnt to the bottom of the pan.
Again, I love this restaurant so maybe it was just an off night?
Wonderful staff and in a great, walkable location in old town. Food was top notch and pace was relaxed for a weekend brunch.
Loved the decor and overall ambiance of the place. Food was exquisite, oysters especially, shrimp, steak tartare, mixed drinks and wine also above par. But the very best was the service-Bianca is to be commended for making us feel special. Will return and make note to all our friends that this is a place to visit.
As always their service was amazing. My fiancée and I love Columbia Firehouse. The food is delicious and we are always treated there with the utmost care and respect.
Rough start but in the end management made it right. Nice place. My wife and I eat here 3 to 4 times a year. Food is great.
Decent food, excellent service, a tad overpriced, nice decor and ambiance. Would probably go again.
Love the Reuben Rolls!!!
Nice brunch menu. Caesar salad was warm and wilted. Served Eggs Benedict with wrong sauce that I discovered after pouring it on. Sent back. Server assured me I would be getting a freshly prepared platter. Minutes later, I was re-served the same wrong food, ice cold, with the correct sauce over the original wrong sauce. Potatoes were cold and extremely salty. Water glasses were unclean and had an odd smell.
I don’t usually leave poor reviews but this experience was truly abysmal although server was attentive and courteous. Food like this should’ve never left the kitchen. Note: Manager gave me a gift certificate and acknowledged my issues, but the stench of that meal remains.
The restaurant was wonderful with regards to its appearance. I ordered the wedge salad with a side of hanger steak. Instead, I was brought a wedge salad with an entire entree of hanger steak, which cost an additional $20. I mentioned the issue and was still charged for the entire entree. Then, when drinking out of my glass, I realized that my glass was dirty. Not just dirty, but chunks of what I’m assuming to be food and grit stuck to the inside of the glass. When I told the waiter, he just brought a different drink (which I didn’t even want to drink at that point). I ended up being charged for and paying for the drink as well. Also, the wedge salad was great, but the hanger steak was poorly cooked. For the amount I paid for the experience, it was underwhelming and there was no attempt to right the wrongs. Unfortunately, I will not be giving the restaurant another shot in the future.
Beautiful place. We started at 5:30 and the ambience was very nice. At some point they started the music and it was harder to talk. I tried to order the ribs but we were an hour too early. They were on the grill outside and wouldn't be ready for at least an hour. That was a disappointment, but they gave us our dessert for free.
We came for a Sunday brunch. Our primary server was good; however, overall service was inattentive and insufficient. We sat with empty plates on the table too long, had one offer for coffee refills about 15 seconds after we received our coffee, then didn’t get a refill again until we asked for one at the end of our meal (the lady refilling coffee just kept walking by our table and we couldn’t get her attention otherwise). The most frustrating part was that it wasn’t busy considering the day. 1:00 PM brunch date for 3 people, and maybe half the tables had people siting at them.
Overall it was a decent experience and the food was good, so we’ll come back. However, if it’s anything like the last time, it will be our final visit.
Got seated in a crowded nook, with a persistent draft from an open door from the service area. Server forgot to enter one of our dishes, and we weren't able to let him know until we had finished dinner. The wedge is overpriced for its size. Entrees always delicious.
Very nice interior, except for the table I was seated at. It was next to a table on a higher level without a partition and I anytime looked that way I was looking at those diners' legs. Pretty weird. Food was fine. Wedge salad excellent. Service was pleasant, and timing of the salad and main entry was proper. Recommended, but don't let them seat you at the table I was given.
We had a fantastic evening! The ambiance was beautiful...although I thought lighting was a bit bright.
Lucky for us, it was 1/2 price wine nite! The wedge salad was fresh & Crisp...The scallops were phenomenal!!!
What a terrific find for two out of town folks on a rain evening n DC! Loved It! Will be back! Have already referred friends n the area!
Everything was perfect. I had brunch with my son it was not busy. The environment was unique It can be good for a date too
Our server, Dennis, was great. The entrees were very good (steak frittes and beef bourguignon). My friend loved the Bees Knees cocktail. We were not crazy about the dessert - it was a supposed to be peaches with some crumble and ice cream. Peaches were a soupy consistency and a scoop of ice cream on top- just not what we expected. Otherwise it was a lovely dinner.
The food is delicious, the atmosphere has a retro feeling but elegant, and customer service is outstanding. Manager, Roger, was very pleasant and went out of his way to make sure my family had a great dining experience. Our new favorite spot to eat for sure!!!!
The food was excellent. I highly recommend the scallops. The woman at the table next to us said the half-chicken is worth ordering, too (and she, like us, said she would typically never order something like a roasted chicken, which she could make at home). The service was attentive.
Great wine list! This restaurant offers menu items featuring many local ingredients from area farms - which I love. The wines are also fabulous - they offer many specialty/local wines by the glass, not just by the bottle!
The menu listed on OpenTable does not reflect their current menu. The choices were scaled down and the food was fine. However, it’s not at the level that’s normally rated this high on this app. Service was fine, ambiance was ok. But this isn’t a special event type of place.
We were blown away by our experience here. The setting was charming. The service was fantastic. Jules has a wonderful personality and goes the extra mile to make sure everything is perfect. The food was outstanding. The biscuits and honey started the meal off so well. The shrimp small plate was incredible. Everything we ordered was perfectly prepared and delicious. We are so glad we chose this restaurant.
We were served quickly but then the waitress started to ignore us. She stopped at a table directly across from us about three times but never glanced our way to see if we needed anything. I believe we waited a long time for our check, too. That being said, we did enjoy our meal.
If you go, you need to sit in the bar area and ask for Jules. I eat our quite a bit for work, and she is one of the best servers I have ever had in a restaurant. She took care of everything we needed, was extremely friendly, very engaging and had the best attitude. Made the dinner a fantastic experience!
The ambiance was great. Food and service was typical of a restaurant. Enjoyed the history of the firehouse.
First time dining experience for a family of four at this place. Very pleasantly surprised. Cool interior. Great friendly service. Menu selection was varied. Food came out promptly. Was done really well. The complimentary biscuits with honey were a hit! Also accommodated a food allergy simply and gracefully. Will be back.
Although the food was good, it wasn’t great, especially for the price. The restaurant itself was nice, clean and the service was good.
The floor was filthy. My shoes stuck The the carpet and the carpet was black. The table was sticky. I had to ask someone to come clean off the table. I had heard great things about this restaurant and was so disappointed.
The waiter was very good!!
Fantastic as always!
Best Wedge Salad with tomatoes, bacon and blue cheese I've EVER had!
Food was delicious, our waiter was very kind. The drinks tasted great. We had a great time there. The atmosphere of the restaurant was great for family night outs.
Columbia Firehouse is a great place to go for a steak. The prime rib was huge and cooked perfectly. My girlfriend's filet mignon was well worth the trip. Plenty of beer and cocktails on tap, and make sure you try the onion rings.
I enjoy Colombia fire house. The beautiful setting and Art Deco flair is so special. Our service was great. However I didn’t find any real value to the food. I found it over priced for what we got and we also had oysters that were mushy and flavorless. We didn’t enjoy them at all. I think we’ll try somewhere new next time.
Food was good and while the servers were very friendly, we couldn’t figure out who exactly was our server. We had about 4 different people coming by our table yet none were consistent. Anytime we needed anything we had to flag somebody down and then it would take a while to get what we had asked for (at least 20 minutes just to get a side of horseradish for the prime rib). It was also absolutely freezing in the restaurant and we ended up having to ask them to turn the AC down because we were so cold. We came during restaurant week and we got a great deal. The jerk chicken with saffron risotto was amazing but VERY spicy.
Great service, delicious food. Loved the outdoor seating area ... very romantic.
The steak is to Die for and the service is outstanding.
The place gives you the distinct feel of old town Alexandria was built on!
The restaurant was too cold I couldn't enjoy my dinner because I was focused on my goosebumps
Service was outstanding. Was catching up with an old friend and couldn't have selected a better spot. Good menu and great bar.
Service is exceptional. My wife and I love to eat dinner here for a date or special occasion
