The Artisan of Clerkenwell
It is a great bar but I was disappointed in the area that was reserved as I booked it 2 weeks before and the are was not fit for 20 people and was blocking most of the bar
I booked an event for +20 guests and we had two small tables (one of them with high chairs) that would only accommodated around 8/10 people. I called them after making the reservation and explained that we would be a large group 50-60+ and they confirmed that they could accommodated in a "private" area of the bar. Disappointing.
The place is very nice and the menu looks quite good. However, the food was average (salmon was overcooked, and so was the meat in the burgers) and the service was very slow, despite being almost empty. We waited very long for our food and even to ask for the bill we had to chase the waiters. On top of that they charged my card with the wrong amount. The place has potential, but our experience was not very good, we won't come back.
Linus is friendly and welcoming.
Come by regularly for the BOGOF burger day, great value; decent burger, very nice fries. Good beer on tap (Notably the Sumo APA).
Good seating and ambience.
Went for a group pub lunch. Great food and friendly staff!
We had a lovely time once again at the Artisan. We were circa 20 of us and they delivered excellent service even though our reservation was booked last minute!
Was great for a big group of people, easy to book, big table and wasn't too busy so we had lots of space, good music. Only downside was that they had ran of out a few dishes on the menu people wanted to order. Other than that great, would recommend as it is a lovely bar.
Food came 2 hours later and they’d ran out of most of the menu items.
We should have been told this in advance so we could leave rather than waiting so long.
Staff were sympathetic and did give a massive discount for our troubles. But would not risk coming again
The food was delicious and fresh. Normal prices for Clerkenwell, ie high but not impossible.
Nice place, well decorated and friendly. Had a group bouncing around and casually leaning all over us for the first part of the meal which was a tad oppressive. Food was generally good, but pretty disappointed in the crumble. A bowl of fruit compote with a light sprinkling of crumble pastry does not a crumble make. On the other hand, the girl serving at the table was a delight.
Fantastic steak and good wine list
This place is clean and spacious
Good quick service for a working lunch - tasty food and generous portion
Great food in a nice atmosphere but the service was too slow for a lunchtime and some of the orders came out wrong. The staff were very nice and good at resolving the problems though. I would go back but not for lunch.
Friendly staff, good food, great location, ideal for a quick business lunch
It was a sunny day so we sat outside. The food was really good especially the paprika chips
Great place, staff very friendly and helpful. Food is value for money. Great place for lunch or just drinks after work
Good for a quick business lunch - clean and quick service
Lunchtime business lunch. I felt that the service was rather rushed especially as there was only one other table occupied whilst we were there! This might also well have a accounted for the complete lack of atmosphere.
A disappointing experience in this edgy part of town
Very relaxed - good service and excellent ribs. Definitely value for money.
In general it was very good, although the music was very loud in the dining area making it hard to have a good conversation
I booked this for a work lunch to welcome a new team member and we all really enjoyed our lunch. I had the fish and chips which was a great twist on a classic and a few others had the flat iron steak which looked delicious and great value. The only downside was we were sat upstairs and we were the only table up there, which meant there wasn't much of an atmosphere (other than the one we created for ourselves!). The staff were great though and I'd definitely recommend it to friends/family.
Tasty burger, I asked for bunless but still got the bun. Not to worry, fairly inexpensive and pretty tasty. Good for a quite bite in a local spot. As I didn't pay the bill, I believe we were charged the full 100% of the food bill rather than the 50% off a la carte, as per the lunch time special. I imagine there don't actively push that.
This place gets a bit rowdy Thursday and Friday's lunch and evenings but always a nice casual environment to meet up.
Fantastic gastropub with simple well executed food and great value. Some of the best chips I have eaten in London. We attended the soft relaunch following refurbishment. The place looks very handsome with leather booths and dark wooden farmhouse style tables. Music was a little too loud for the dining room. I wonder if they don't have separate volume controls for the restaurant and the pub.
My companion had Cajun fish and chips. The sweet potato chips were just amazing. Very crunchy, slightly caramelized flavor that contrasted beautifully with the zingy lime mayo served with them.. The mayo had been made with plenty of zest and citrus juice. The battered fish was lovely and light and didn't taste oily. There were some garnishes of pickles and re-fried beans.
My main of pork ribs was enormous. I ended up taking half of the meat home. Ribs were very tender and falling off the bone, though for my taste there was too much of the sweet BBQ sauce. Again some of the best fries I have ever had. Thin, very crunchy and seasoned with cayenne and paprika. There was half a cob of corn that had been charred on the grill. It didn't have that distinctly chewy texture of corn cooked entirely on the grill. The corn had been parboiled, and then blackened a little over flames but it was very pleasant. There was also some undressed watercress and coleslaw that was crunchy and fresh but otherwise indifferent.
Do be warned about ordering wine here. If you ask for a bottle of the house red, they don't bring the cheapest bottle (a £19.50 Tempranillo) but the Malbec which is halfway down the list at £23.50.
Food was delicious and would have happily paid full price but grateful for the 50% off offer. Great ambience and staff were very friendly and attentive.
Superb service, delicious food, awesome experience.
Following a refurb, their food offering has 50% off and is great value therefore. Lunch was good pub food, service excellent - a bonus to sit outside on one of the hottest days of the year.
Overall the food was good, however the service was very poor,
I was with 6 colleagues from work. half of us had starters the others only had a main course. i asked for all the main courses all to arrived together but in fact the people only having a main course received their food before the others had received their starters. In additional we ordered a second round of drinks. these were left on the bar and a member of party in the end had to fetch them.
Booked for lunch purely on basis of location but found friendly staff and perfectly acceptable food. Just left with a bad taste in mouth as this is the sort of place that adds service charge to bill then sneakily asks you for a second tip on the credit card machine.
Our waitress was absolutely gorgeous. Sweet, kind and patient.
Food was spot on. Well portioned and fresh. The vegetarian burger was the star of the meal that came with wasabi mayo. When you order sweet potato fries anywhere... it's usually in small portions. Here, you get a dishful! Yum!
We finished off with cornflake ice-cream which was delicious and innovative.
Tuesday lunchtime was not busy at the Artisan of Clerkenwell but despite that, it took an age for drinks to arrive. The food did not take particularly long, however and my friend's fish & chips looked as it should. My fish finger sandwich was less successful. Rock hard goujons in a baguette so over crunchy, it stripped the roof of my mouth. Half way through our meal, the bill arrived, without being requested and we got the sense it was time to go. There are some great places to eat in the area but on this experience, The Artisan does not quite measure up.
We arrived having booked a table for 6 people on a Friday at 8pm and although the bar area was busy, the restaurant was virtually empty and we needn't had booked. The dining area is extremely dark and we could barely read the sparce menu (the menu I'd viewed online had much more on it)
We ordered some drinks which took a fair while to arrive, but came with an apology about the wait. For starters we shared some small plates, which were fantastic. I would highly recommend the scotch egg. Unfortunately this was the highlight of the meal. After hearing some commotion in the kitchen our main course arrived and whilst my fish and chips was delicious, the rest of my party ordered burgers which arrived over cooked and hard, disguised in a moist brioche bun.
That being said, as soon as this was pointed out, the waiter apologised profusely and immediately took them off of our bill. The waiter was absolutely amazing and really made our experience there. I would return but only for drinks and perhaps a scotch egg or two.
A nice alternative to the other restaurants in the area, this pub is bringing the popular pulled pork, burgers and american style alternatives one finds popping up all over London to Clerkenwell both reasonably priced and executed well.
Service was a bit abrupt all the time - it could have been a bit more subtle as our conversations were often duly interrupted by one of their attendants.
The banquets are super comfy and the service was attentive and efficient. Certainly did not leave hungry as the portions were ample as well as delicious. The only issue was that we ate on a Thursday evening which meant the bar was rammed and the noise filtered into the dining area so my group had to raise our voices to hear each other.
This is a large industrial size arena. It has little in the way of comfort in terms of soft furnishings etc. The menu was very limited with no deserts on offer at all. The falafel burger looked like a load of dog's poo that had been run over by a car. The fish and chips were indifferent. Enough said.
had a group of overseas friends there before my wedding - was a really great venue in an interesting area; drink selection really great and there was a good seating selection.
I would highly recommend The Artisan of Clerkenwell
Friendly greeting and immediately shown to our table - a raised booth to the right of the bar. Immediately attended by a friendly waitress who quickly arranged our drinks. On returning she took our food order which arrived rapidly within 10 mins. I'd have waited longer if necessary as the short wait didn't do justice to just how good the beer battered fish & chips were. We both ordered the same & were in total agreement - awesome! Nice tartar sauce on the side, with freshly made 'crushed' peas, and the tastiest triple cooked chunky chips. All surrounding a beautiful piece of white fleshy soft haddock, stunningly battered with crispy, beer-tasting goodness!
I'd go again. Today. Tomorrow. Probably daily for as long as my arteries could cope!
Nice place but we were the only diners which worried us. menu looked good some nice variety, especially the small plates selection. unfortunately, execution was poor. the food had clearly been prepared well in advance and kept warm. mini burger buns dry, mini fish and chips very dry and no crunch on fish or chip. pork belly chunks also no crunch on rind as they been left to sweat. a med veg tart was inedible due to drying out so much it was harder than the plate it came on. probably trying to offer too much.they should reduce the choice and do a smaller selection well. Service was good and they removed poor items from bill.
sort the food out guys and the dining room may fill up in future.
We were looking for someone to have a quick lunch before going to look at tiles! Good location, interesting decor, attentive staff, nice beer. The lamb was delicious but the burger was a little dry. No choice was given to how the burger was to be cooked. When we pointed this out we were told it is regulation that the meat has to be heated to 75 degrees (I think that was the figure) If this is the case then I think the customer needs to be told this when ordering. And surely there must be a way of retaining moisture??
Food was cold - had about 4 chips - certainly NOT value for money. Won't rush back!
We had a last minute booking for 15 people and they were able to accommodate. It's a cool venue, mixing good food and funky pub atmosphere.
