The Abergavenny Arms
My friend and I come regularly! It is our favourite place for a pub lunch and catch up!
First time visiting this place. Usually really packed out with cars whenever we drive pass, but the evening we came it was empty there was us and about 3 other groups of people eating. We were all crammed into one room when there was lots of different tables either side of the pub to sit and eat. Because there was only 2 of us we sat at this table for 2 in the corner it was very cold and hardly any room for our drinks and plates on the table.
The staff were all lovely and did a good job at serving us. We ordered our drinks. Then ordered our food. We both had Camembert to start as we were told they are only mini ones and we were both quite hungry. These tasted delicious and was served with rustic bread and onion chutney. The mains included:-
1- Abergavenny Arms mince beef burger with bacon and cheese, sweet potato fries and salad - my partner enjoyed this. The sweet potatoes fries was not an option on the menu but the waitress said it’s fine just an extra charge for them. And myself had the Sheperds Pie with cheesy mash served with buttered leeks. I unfortunatley didn’t enjoy my meal very much. The leeks didn’t look like they had been cooked in butter and tasted hard and chewy. And the sheperds pie didn’t taste of much. When I was looking online at the menu they had all sorts of other dishes including ‘Pie Of The Day’- but this wasn’t an option on the menu we looked at, so it made it a difficult decision to choose.
We both were full up and wanted to wait a bit until we had pudding which the waitress said was fine but then later on came back and said the kitchen is closing at 9pm so to get any pudding orders in before then. We didn’t feel rushed but we did feel like they was closing early when they didn’t shut until late but we guessed it was due to not many people in the pub tonight so they would close early!
I don’t think we will be returning to this pub. It’s a sad thing to say but it just didn’t appeal to us.
DON'T eat here. The management has changed and so has everything that this once lovely country pub had going for it. The food is below average: the children's Cream of Tomato Soup was highly spiced and 'chillied' - hardly as described. My wife ordered Pork Linguini and got the vegetarian option instead and the real cracker was that the waitress inferred it was my wife's fault - and not hers. When we asked for the £5 soup to be taken off the bill there was a long delay and the waitress brought the revised bill back and slammed it on our table 'there is your new bill'. The acting manager changed from being very welcoming and pleasant to antagonistic. Thank godness we have choices - WE WILL NEVER RETURN. Can't say any more than this!
Great meal, good value. Really like this pub. Quiet on a Tuesday evening. But road quite noisy (not the pub's fault) and developers are turning the view into houses....shame as its a gorgeous view. Go and try it
Lovely old pub. Food is good and menu not too pretentious. Staff are friendly. Eaten there twice and enjoyed both occasions
Booked a table for four on a Tuesday for my wife’s birthday.
Warm greeting when we arrived. Knew it was a ‘special’ occasion.
We were served quickly and the food was excellent. Prices are about average
for this type of country pub restaurant.
We enjoyed our evening and would/will go again soon.
Amazing food !!!
Would highly recommend anyone to try this gem of a pub !
Although we had made a booking several days in advance we were asked to cooperate as a ‘wedding party ‘ needed food.
Then they didn’t need food. However it felt as though we had been forgotten and had to firmly request some one take our order!
The food was great and we enjoyed our visit overall.
Hi Anne. Thank you for your comments. The pub is now under new management as of the 29th of July, we hope you will consider returning so that we make amends to your previous experience. Best regards Dan.
Very friendly staff and very attentive.
The vegetable linguini had a scarcity of vegetables and was slightly dry.
My friends enjoyed their meals so perhaps I was just unlucky.
Sunday lunch without the roast - our choice! We all had delicious, hot and well-presented meals and very good service. We sent a note via this site to ask for a quiet table and got one. Very helpful. Will go again. Recommended.
We booked a table here as it was my mum's birthday and its a dog friendly pub, and she wanted her dog with her. After a lovely meal, everyone in the pub sang 'Happy Birthday' to my mum, and she was really touched - it made her evening! It's a nice friendly pub and very accommodating to our needs (I have a food allergy and they were fine about checking etc.) I would recommend it!
We were looking forward to a leisurely dinner and ordered bread and olives to nibble while we waited. Before we could eat even one olive our meal of cod and cod arrived. I said to the waiter that that was a bit silly not giving us time to eat £7 worth of food. He just shrugged and said that the fish meal was quick to prepare. At no point did anyone tell us that we wouldn't have time to eat what we ordered
The olives were taken away and not charged for and we were left with £3.50 worth of bread and oil which were not eaten. We had intended to make an evening of it with desserts, coffee etc but we were so annoyed that we just ate the
fairly ordinary fish and chips and left. Would have had a more enjoyable evening at home with takeaway fish and chips.
A very pleasant evening meal at a reasonable price. Excellent selection of Gins was particularly surprising
Well worth a return visit
The food was good, and all meals enjoyable. The service was prompt and friendly. It was surprisingly quiet for a restaurant with a beautiful view, on a beautiful day.
That said it was relatively standard pub fare - good and enjoyable without being truly memorable.
My duck was lovely, as were the chocolate brownies. The burger was excellent, and tasty, as were scallops. Fish and chips are good, though not huge. My wife’s sirloin steak was enjoyed though again, nothing really special.
Would go back, certainly.
Think the chef may have had an off night. Chips cooked far too much and same with chicken burger. Shame because the food is normally so good.
Never disappointed with food here. Staff always friendly and accommodating.
We brought our friends who are vegetarians they were very impressed with the wide selection and presentation of food. I had the crab on special menu it was delicious my friend had the fish cake also on specials. My husband had roast beef which he said melted in his mouth cooked to perfection. My other friend had nut roast which he felt was one of the best he has tasted.
Would definitely recommend this lovely pub & food, lots of different seating areas & menu to suit all pockets.
The pub was lovely and the food was excellent, bar a couple of things.
We had Sunday lunch and the Yorkshire pudding wasn't particularly great (tasteless and tough. We all left some).
(We live in Yorkshire and know a good Yorkshire pudding when we see one!)
I had the veggie option (Veg wellington), which was great but far too peppery.
Presentation and staff were fantastic. Would definitely come again.
Very enjoyable experience will definitely come again.
Great food and good choice of drinks
Enjoyed the sea bass very much but the portions are not very big and a couple of hours later I was ready for a man-size meal! Staff were very friendly.
The pub has a lovely atmosphere and the staff are very welcoming. The seafood linguine was beautiful, the sauce being excellent. Perhaps too generous with the mussels and needing a side bowl for the shells!
Had the salmon with potatoes and chunks of mango. Absolutely delicious! Didn’t really have room for a dessert but forced myself and was not disappointed (Chocolate tart with raspberry sorbet).
Not too busy but enough people to make it an attractive hostelry. Will definitely return.
Our evening at The Abergavenny Arms was on a Monday evening, so it may have been quieter than usual. But maybe this made it all the better for us! The staff went the extra mile to place us in a cosy window nook - for they actually read my booking note concerning our wedding anniversary celebration! The service was outstanding: friendly and inviting. My wife had the duck and I had the salmon - both dishes were prepared well and served attractively. We both had desserts: my chocolate brownie was a bit dry but this was a very minor issue. The overall pricing is reasonable and, in light of the service, very much worth the expense! We would recommend The Abergavenny Arms and, in fact, look forward to returning on another occasion (I especially want to try the burger!)
We had an enjoyable meal at The Abergavenny Arms on Saturday evening. At first we were sat very near quite a large noisy family group where the father was struggling to control some exuberant kids. However once they had left things calmed down and we enjoyed our evening with friends. We were advised when we arrived that they had a large birthday party in and that food service might be a little slow - however I must say that we didn’t notice anything untoward - perhaps it was the scintillating conversation of our friends. Food was good and service was friendly. Would certainly go there again.
Amazing food /service and view .
I would definitely recommend it to anyone
Amazing food, beautiful venue and excellent English wines!
Excellent service, good food and very friendly staff
Great service and very good food and ale. A little noisy as we were just off the main bar area - we pre-booked, so next time I would ask for a table in the main restaurant area.
Definitely planning to go back!
Super food, great service and easy to park
The Abergavenny Arms is ideal for the family belated experience on a Sunday afternoon when may other restaurants are closed. The roasts are to die for!
Nice food, good atmosphere, great service
Very lovely food and the service was also top notch
We had dinner for 6 on a Saturday evening which had been planned for a while. The food and service were great but there was a children’s party in another room at the same time and the children obviously got bored in one room and did a bit of running about which was annoying but one of the parents put a stop to it quickly thankfully. Overall a lovely evening and would happily return.
Love the mussel night. Would like to have the option of a variety of sauces.
Was excellent last time we came 3 weeks ago, this time was quite disappointing. Service was very slow, food was not up to usual standard - with missing items and smaller portions. Hopefully will be better next time
The pub was chilly and the service started slow but improved. We left disappointed as our favourite desert was not on the menu, waffles. Sunday roast was fabulous as always.
This is the third time that I have eaten at Frant Abergavenny Arms and it just gets BETTER.
More choices in vegetarian food than last time which shows me that you do take heed of what customers say. Well done you. t was a lovely evening and I shall come again- many times
Fantastic visit for mothers day, which included a complimentary Prosecco & bunch of daffs! Cannot fault this place & the staff are amazing, oh yeah, food was great too!
Mothers Day family meal. Great service. Bit portions and value for money. Would recommend
We went on Mother’s Day and they added some really nice touches for the day. My mum felt very special.
Roast was perfect.
