This is fine dining at its best. The service is attentive, but not intrusive. The food was absolutely delicious, and thanks to Dine LA, it was a great deal as well. This is go-to place for special occasions, and my husband's birthday dinner here was all we've come to expect at this very special original Lawry's restaurant.
Consistently this restaurant has great food, good service, great bartenders. Prime rib always good.
Making reservation requested booth for medical reasons yet given attitude about it by hostess starting things off with a negative vibe, gave us half booth in a corner yet there were full ones available as restaurant not even half full at 4:30pm, at this point didn't want to argue so sat where we were taken and stuffed into booth side, two chairs faced wall not suitable for a nice dining experience...given regular & wine menus quickly "specials" announced but no dineLA menu in sight, informed server dineLA event that brought us in noticing this repeated at tables around us, clearly this establishment not excited about dineLA event. Server very friendly making us feel in the end hopefully would turn in to a great dining experience, informed server Jennifer most importantly we really want everything served hot, lukewarm soup had to be sent back (busboy server told us this was the way it came out from the kitchen!) and he seemed displeased we didn't find his explanation acceptable, finally hot bowls arrived and soup was tasty and enjoyable...Salmon entrée came out cold in the middle and went back for reheating, it was ok but still not like fresh off the grill. Dinner-mate Prime Rib brought out hard and cold with bone-in, server through all this remained cheerful or we would have said forget it and taken off for The Morrison down the street where everything always hot and fresh with a warm greeting at the door! In the end even with dineLA special over $100 for two should have been a glorious dining experience, crew overall needs to be more upbeat with customers like Jennifer who was a delight, overall classic restaurant needs to get its act together...
Great cut of prime rib. Comes with mashed potatoes and creamed corn or spinach. Salad is extra. You get a basket of sourdough and rye bread! Service very nice and it’s not rushed here!
A great part of the Lawry’s brand.
Tables are very close, not one of my favorite things. Drinks are extremely small. Chocolate soufflé outstanding. Prime rib was good, but not as good a Lawrys and this is a sister restaurant. There are several different rooms. Make sure you tell them when they seat you that you do t want to look at a wall. Some places put a mirror along a long wall when there’s a lot of seating facing it, not here. Valet parking. If you get there early enough you can find street parking.
Second time going to the restaurant, for the type of restaurant that it is I felt value for money and would return. Table service was attentive, food came out fast from kitchen. They recognized the special occasion very nice of the restaurant to do so. Only minor issue is they didn’t recognize my seating request, although they do have posted that they will do what they can to accommodate seating preferences, of which I can understand; the front of house greeters didn’t acknowledge my preference at all , at the very least “good evening I see that you requested such and such seating unfortunately we are unable to accommodate your preference at this time.” Simple, easy customer service. Other than that those who have a nostalgia to the Tam O shanter and appreciate its history you’ll have a great time. Again I recommend this establishment.
Extremely disappointed is an understatement . I ordered the prime rib most popular cut. It didn't even look like PR . It was solid meat , not fat and tough as nails . The Yorkshire Pudding was 1 degree below burnt not enough burnt to be inedible . I did have the souffle for desert and it was fine . The worse part was may brother's dinner . He is not a big beef eater so he order the salmon . It was oily and size wise about the size of a woman's palm (aka weightwatchers ) sat on kale , No potato . His dinner was a piece of salmon and bread for $35.00 I am a beef eater and I have been hoping to find a replacement for Swiss Chef San Remo (chain restaurants(Outback , Claim Jumpers) are Okay but i am willing to pay a little more for better quality . I have had far better Prime Rib at Coco's $105 without alcohol or the tip added (25) is way overpriced for what i would expect of their restaurant .
Service wasn’t what I remembered. Difficult to get our waiters attention and when we did we felt like we had to hurry up and chose or she would walk away. I don’t blame her as she had a few large parties at the same time. I just think they maybe needed to split the tables in a more efficient way. Also our drinks came after our appetizers. Still love this place though.
The meal was excellent. Our server was attentive. We were seated next to a table where apparently the customers were hard of hearing. Their conversation was so loud, we could hardly understand each other. However, I would still return for dinner. Especially during the Christmas season.
Love the memories of days past dining at the Tam. Unfortunately some old courtesies have slipped into disuse, for whatever reasons. Saturday we were greeted indifferently. Our server was probably new or hadn't been well trained. His English was inadequate but that didn't stop him from trying to enroll us in Lawry's VIP Dining Program. We said we wanted to order the souffle. He said they only "made three that day" and he thought there were none left. Sure enough, all sold out..??
When we departed no one thanked us for coming. Surely, an old courtesy could be reinstated or perhaps the hostess was just away from her station. The environment is still charming and warm but I guess things change and not always for the best.
Mediocre food that felt like it came out of a can.
We ordered the Tam O'shanter cut or the signature cut, the quality of the meat wasn't as good as before....to make matters worse, the waiter cared more about his tip than servicing us, he didn't care filling our drinks when saw our cup was empty..... after this experience, I would not recommend this place to either my friends or family....
Loved everything about this experience, since Tam O'Shanter is a treasure! It's my new favorite restaurant, whether for a special occasion or everyday meal.
Great restaurant for a very long time! Can't wait to go back
We have been coming to Tam O'Shanter for New Year's Eve, for number of years and have had a wonderful time, however, this year, even though our reservation was for much later time, there was no feeling that it was New Year's Eve. It could have been any other night.
Love the Tam! Service is always friendly and attentive, food always great! Love it during the holidays which makes it feel like home.
As a Lawery's restaurant they serve a very good prime rib. All their entrees are very good.
A little pricey but we went because of the Christmas decor and carolers that they have through January 30. A very cozy and welcoming place. Great bar area with sandwiches that are less expensive.
Food was good. I had the California cut Prime Rib. Husband had Prime short rib. He loved it. I wish our server could have been just a tad friendlier, my review would have been different but he made me not want to go back any time soon.
We go here in Dec 30 every year. Love the carrollers. Food , drink and service never disappoint. Our server was Darah, she was excellent.
We came for the carilers and fish and chips. Unfortunately a large group had ordered fish and chips earlier in the day and there was none for us so that was disappointing. Also we were going to have chocolate soufflé but not on The menu anymore.
Ate here with daughter for the holidays. Food was average and pricey. You are paying for the historic ambience for sure. Service slow. Server never came to check in. (It wasn’t busy- we had a 9:15 seating on a Sunday night. Brie appetizer delicious but portion small for $14. Beer prices a good value. Cocktail prices high, between $15 and $18. Strolling holiday singers dressed in 19th century attire a nice touch for the holidays. Dinner for two with 2 cocktails and an appetizer $141 plus $40 tip even though server didn’t check In.
Christmas Carolers at the Tam is the best holiday tradition I've started with my family. The food and service is great. And the atmosphere this time of the year is especially nice.
We booked an early reservation for four on a Sunday evening. I was looking forward to experiencing one of L.A.’s oldest restaurants. The make-believe old world ambiance was authentic and inviting. We squeezed into our cozy and comfortable booth. From beginning to end, the service was friendly, knowledgeable, and quick. The prime rib was excellent. The Christmas carolers were fantastic and a pleasant surprise. Will definitely return.
Always our first choice for a place to celebrate something special.
We so wanted this to be good & looked forward to meeting our dear friends for brunch to celebrate both our anniversaries & as a homecoming in essence, since both of us ladies met while working there in the mid to late 70's & developed a lasting frindship. All fuzzy feelings left soon, as we were shown to the worst table with uncomfortable chairs in a cold empty room (yes, we had reservations) We asked to move & were accommodated, but had to switch 2 chairs out ourselfs for more comfortable ones as hostess replied they were not allowed to move them but we could??? Us ladies ordered bottomless mimoa's which was a mistake as the pour was in the tinyest flute ever with oj on the side to mix but the oj was way past its prime & terrible. Also disappointing was the "Toad in the hole". The yorkshire was glompy & had no taste, the beef in it was tough. Our husbands finished them for us. Also the rolls/bread are nothing like they used to be. It seemed dingy, the napkins were linty & the restrooms had a sewer gas smell. A very disappointing reunion brunch all around. I guess you really cant go back!
Always love coming here! Especially for a Christmas and St. Patrick’s Day!
Reservations can be difficult unless made far in advance though. Wish there was a wait list.
Also REALLY wish there was more of a dress code. It’s Frustrating to come dressed up for the Holidays to find people in Hoodies and Baseball Caps in an environment like this. This is not to qualify anyone, but even a nice sweater would suffice.
Such a festive and charming holiday experience. Warm and inviting dining rooms with fireplaces all decked out in holiday decor, wonderful caroling quartets and old school holiday fare from roast goose dinner to hot buttered run. Will make this a seasonal tradition.
Food is always amazing! The Dickens carolers were delightful and our waitress was pleasant and friendly. The chef has finally made some adjustments to the menu for people with food allergies. Always enjoy being at the Tam!
If I could give service ten stars, I would. Our server was warm and personable, and everyone from busser to host was eager to please, polite and conscientious. The carolers were an added treat to an already perfect evening. Thanks, Tam O' Shanter!
Great restaurant the service and food are excellent.
We got there early so not noisy at all. Waitress was sooooo helpful. Decorations were just right Sat at Walt Disney table No rush good was excellent
Good food, but a little expensive for what you get
This is my 72nd year of going to the Tam, starting when I was three! This experience was not as good as most. I was served my soup in a broken crock, returned it, and was given soup in another broken crock. We had to ask twice to get more bread and the waiter forgot my baked potato. I asked for my drink in a tub and this was forgotten. All in all not one of my best experiences at the Tam.
Absolutely magical. All ages and generations will feel at home.
Christmas Eve lunch
Going to The Tm for Roast Beef & Yorkshire pudding is an annual tradition for me. Tam does it best.
Everything was great. The noise level was loud due to all the parties with children. Tables were too close together.
Our holiday tradition! The carolers are always fantastic.
My husband and I love this place. Historical, beautiful, warm, friendly, comfortable and the food and drinks cannot be beat! Perfect for holidays, celebrations, and romance. We love the prime rib and all the makings. And do not forget dessert - order the chocolate mousse ahead. Go and enjoy!
