Tucked away in Stanhope Row between Green Park, Buckingham Palace and Hyde Park – the Park Lane Mews Hotel is an exclusive venue with more than just a fabulous address. Inside, the Stanhope Bar and Restaurant is a decorative little enclave which attracts a high-net-worth Hermès-clad crowd who favour the place for discreet working lunches, pre-theatre meals, and romantic tables for two. With gilt mirrors, frescoed ceilings and citrus coloured velvet chairs – this is a super-desirable dining destination, and the hotel’s lounge bar is ideal for pre/post meal cocktails. The restaurant’s classic menu includes favourites such as the chicken tikka curry, spaghetti with a tomato, basil and black olive sauce, and the chocolate gateaux served with vanilla ice cream.

This meal was a disaster. We were given a laminated menu with a choice of three starters, three main courses and three desserts. The "extensive wine menu" was hand written on a folded piece of photocopied A4. The 3 of us dined in an empty room which was cold and lifeless. Our 70's style starters; one Parma ham & melon and a Prawn cocktail were served with limp lettuce. The main course - well school dinners were better cooked and served. I went for the more exotic of the three; the chicken and stir fried veg in chili sauce. What I got was a dry chicked breast with a handful of Birds Eye style chunky veg dribbled with chili sauce and more limp lettuce. The sea bass was inedible and even the coffee was awful. Nothing like the write up!
