ST. JOHN Bread & Wine reflects the rhythms of its locale whilst observing the same respect for seasonal, indigenous ingredients and "the whole beast" as the bigger sister restaurant. Opening for breakfast, lunch and supper seven days a week, this branch very much beats its own drum with a menu structured towards a slightly less formal manner of dining, with guests actively encouraged to share dishes as they're ready from the kitchen.

As well as selling goods to take home from our bakery, wines by the bottle or the case can be bought from our lists to take home with some delivery available.

Bread & Wine has been voted Best British Restaurant by the Evening Standard and named as best value restaurant by The Observer Food Monthly.

I came here for a big breakfast — I had the Scotch Woodcock (a discovery for me) and porridge with earl grey prune, both of which were very good. The service was excellent, and the place is very nice, a good balance of stylish and cosy I think. I'll be sure to visit again when I'm next in London !

We are regular customer, but I'm afraid the place is not what used to be. The other one in Saint John street is now I'm afraid on another planet.

Best Welsh rarebit you'll ever taste.
Never get tired of this place, love the regular staples on the menu and there's always something interesting on the daily specials.

Excellent if you want to try new kinds of food, and very high quality. Menu changes every day but always rich ok choice. Expensive (be prepared to spend £70+ a head if having 3 courses + drinks) but justified by high quality, uniqueness and friendly quick service

Lovely staff and everything comes out fresh, but the 2 dishes I had (raw cauliflower and butternut squash with some kind of ricotta) were very underwhelming, and not worth their price tag.
I think it’s fine if you’re a meat eater so you can enjoy the whole ‘nose to tail’ experience, but this wasn’t for me.

Anther fabulous dining experience .. we had the gurnard and the foie gras with mushrooms and the suede cake. all delicious and enough for the two of us. I had a light red by the glass, perfect.

We have enjoyed many dinners at Bread and Wine as well as at St John and the food has always been honest. However of late it had become much less refined and rather coarse. Our most recent experience was unpleasant. Firstly rough service from the waitress who we believe to be the manageress. Secondly we were advised the mallard would be served pink - actually it was raw with congealed blood on the surface, not just red juice from the cut surface (I am a doctor.) The serrated knife could not cut the meat. 2 different waiters did not accept that the food was raw - they just said 'we serve duck pink'. It is a shame they do not listen to their customers.

The menu is interesting and has some unusual British dishes. The Blood Cake and Welsh Rarebit are very good and would recommend. Wines all French and a little expensive, in my opinion. Service excellent.

St. John’s was good, but my server wasn’t particularly knowledgeable about the menu. Another server helped out and she was terrific, but on the whole, they needed to be a bit better. The food was pretty good, but not fantastic. Wine choices were very good, but a bit shallow when they were poured.

Great atmosphere and service! I love this kind of cuisine where the produce of the season is used to prepare great meals. Portions are large. I’d prefer slightly smaller plates so one can try more from the menu. Great wine selection. Thanks for great evening!

Business meal for 2. Starters: Cods Roe (5/5 - very interesting and tasty), Terrine (3/5 - good enough but nothing special). Mains: Skate with capers & chives (4/5 - good combination / tasty), Venison & Red Cabbage (3/5 - venison a bit chewy, but not bad overall). Pudding: Eccles cake & Wensleydale (4/5 - a bit different and nice way to end the meal).

Wine list: quite long / interesting and plenty of not overly expensive options.

The decor is basic but fine. The place was full but not overly noisy. Service seemed a little stretched but our waiter did a good job given it was so busy.

Overall, we enjoyed the food and the atmosphere and I will definitely give this restaurant another go.

Very traditional English cuisine that really surprised us in the best way possible. We were skeptical of the dishes from the start, but we wanted to try everything. I can describe how delicious everything was and how pleasantly amazed we were by the meal. One of the most memorable ones we had in London. Couldn't recommend higher.

One of the best restaurants I have visited in a long time. I had parsnip soup, followed by kedgeree, and hazelnut and brandy pudding. I can't remember what my friend had for a starter, but she had butternut squash with curd as a main, and ice cream for pudding. We agreed that all was delicious and one couldn't really ask for better.

Disappointed as it used to be my favourite restaurant in London. The food is still good but the quality of the service has seriously deteriorated. They were really not that busy but no one was really waiting for us towards the end of the dinner. I remember a few years ago they would give you two large slices of bread to start and as much bread as needed during dinner. We were given a terrine with no bread. After asking for some, we were given one and a half slice - one of them with a large whole in it.

A lovely convivial place. We go there as much for the atmosphere and the service as for the food. Great and varied menu - you can eat a little or a lot and sharing plates aren’t compulsory. Oxheart, chips and ketchup was delicious. We also had a cabbage and shrimp salad, eccles cake with cheese and a wonderfully creamy, nutty parfait with hot madeleines. These were all great. Kedgeree not so good - too many red onions and an overpowering chutney - but this just a blip.

Fake news! Went last Friday morning. We were the only ones there. The type of establishment where the service makes you feel like they're doing you a favor. Food bland. A place that thinks it is acceptable to not offer butter (or anything) with a plain piece of toast (unless you ask) and where they'll serve you a piece of fish with a thousand tiny bones making it impossible to savor a single bite.
