About Soi 38

For years, owners Nat Ongsangkoon & Dia Khanthongthip have dreamed of bringing Thai market foods to DC, and are excited about the canvas Soi 38 presents. As natives of Bangkok, Thailand, they grew up relishing trips to the night market for some of the best food in Thailand, and are excited to bring this collection of street foods to Washington, DC.

Inspired by the underground eateries around Bangkok’s night markets, Soi 38 features creative Thai street foods, hearty Thai favorites and a bar program featuring draft and bottled cocktails to DC’s West End neighborhood.

The name Soi 38 is based on the iconic street food district and night market of the same name in Bangkok. As evening falls in Thailand, the Soi 38 night market transforms into a high energy, open-air food market crowded with stalls and rickety furniture where vendors dish out authentic Thai food favorites until the early-morning hours.

The delicious were easy to share for a group. Delicious papaya salad and other spicy options. Cocktails were lackluster.

I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of Soi 38's menu, it is far from just pad Thai and curries, with several dishes from central and northern Thailand. Also, the quality is very good, as are the cocktails--both in strength and taste. Soi 38 goes into my top southeastern Asian restaurants, along with Thip Khao and Little Serrow.

Service was very good but the restaurant was also quite
The food was really good and had all the wonderful fresh flavours you would expect
It was only let down by the heat I enjoy spicy food but unfortunately it was no where near hot enough

Fine restaurant, caters to the neighborhood (aka businesses/lawfirms) so prices are higher than they should be for decent Thai food

Dropped in after a cruise on the Potomac because she had a hankering for Asian grub.

The night was warm but not too humid, so we enjoyed our seats on 21st Street.

My Northern Thai minced pork dish was wonderfully spicy. She took home about half of her shrimp entrée and enjoyed it the following day.

Service was friendly and efficient and the bartender generous.

We will return to Soi 38.

Saw an episode of "Bizarre Foods" on the Travel Channel that featured cuisine from Chiang Mei in northern Thailand. One dish that appealed was Nam Prik Ong, a spicy pork dip. Checked online and saw Soi 38 had that on its menu, so walked down to try it. It was very tasty and will get me back there monthly.

This is a great place for a business lunch however a member of our party was vegan and requested adjustments be made accordingly - however after the lunch she became sick most likely because the meal was not completely vegan.

We started outside, but there were a few mosquitoes, so we moved inside. Service was very accommodating, and the food came quickly. Flank steak was delicious. Wide noodles with seafood was decent. Grilled shrimp appetizer was also good.

Had a small issue which they addresses quickly and were very accommodating. Food was good service was great but my favorite item was the sticky rice dessert.... I'm still thinking about it and next time I visit the area I'm going to go back and get it... it was that good

Was in the mood for Thai food because I had tickets to "The King & I" at the Kennedy Center for the next evening. Got a minced pork entrée that reminded me of a Nam Sod salad, my favorite Thai dish. Had to ask for Nam Pla (fish sauce) but was given a quartet of sauces that spiced up my meal.

Second time there and the food is always amazing. It a good pre theatre destination because parking across the street is easy and it is then a short drive to the Kennedy Center

Dishes from the Chef's Specialties were good, but choices from the rest of the menu were the same or less flavorful than the same dish at less expensive Thai restaurants. Appetizers were delicious. Whole menu needs more thoughtful vegetarian options.

Ok thai food. Didn't have the heat as I was expecting. Menu said spicy and it didn't find that to be true. Lots of options on the menu so everyone can find something.

Extensive Thai dinner menu, well prepared, friendly non-intrusive service. Our server was courteous and informative. We love the ambiance and dramatic dragon-theme mural. We dine here about once a month, and have come to expect consistently delicious food, well presented. Good vegetarian options!

An elegant restaurant with hard working servers. First time there, so my one dinner may not reflect overall quality, but my green curry noddle dish turned out to be more of a soup and was disappointing. The fried spring rolls were thin and hence too oily. Whole grilled rockfish pleased my friend but that's about it for a party of 4.

Soi 38 is actually on 21st St not L which doesn't follow the actual address (2021 L St NW). Anyway, I chose this place because it is run/owned by Thai people and they had an interesting mix of dishes I'd never seen (street food focus) and old favorites. We ordered the grilled octopus which had a dipping sauce that is one of the hottest (spicy) I've ever tried. It made me nervous because we ordered a '3 chili' designated entree (Dry curry rub) not that spicy but salty. Both of us felt the impact of the salt the next day. We shared a started and entree and still had food to take home. The ice cream dessert has 4 scoops - this could be cut back to 3 easily. Prices were moderate. Interesting specialty drinks too. Service was exceptional for the price. Our waiter really took his time to answer our questions.

Consistently great meal - our go to Thai place in DC. We come here before we see performances at the Kennedy Center. Having been to Thailand we always feel like we are back at the night markets when eating here. The food is outstanding and authentic. The staff is very attentive and handle small (just the two of us) and large groups (two post graduation groups in the restaurant) with ease. Highly recommended.
