About Soi 38

For years, owners Nat Ongsangkoon & Dia Khanthongthip have dreamed of bringing Thai market foods to DC, and are excited about the canvas Soi 38 presents. As natives of Bangkok, Thailand, they grew up relishing trips to the night market for some of the best food in Thailand, and are excited to bring this collection of street foods to Washington, DC.

Inspired by the underground eateries around Bangkok’s night markets, Soi 38 features creative Thai street foods, hearty Thai favorites and a bar program featuring draft and bottled cocktails to DC’s West End neighborhood.

The name Soi 38 is based on the iconic street food district and night market of the same name in Bangkok. As evening falls in Thailand, the Soi 38 night market transforms into a high energy, open-air food market crowded with stalls and rickety furniture where vendors dish out authentic Thai food favorites until the early-morning hours.

I dined at Soi38 a year ago and had a favorable experience of delicious spicy Thai food. But this time the food was very disappointing. We started with wrapped rice paper (Kuay Tiew Lui Suan ) which was more suitable as rabbit food - all lettuce & carrots with no hint of minced shrimp or chicken! Goong Aob Woon Sen (baked shrimp with noodles) was passable. But Ped Krob, supposedly crispy duck with basil & chili was a disaster .. greasy fried duck pieces, absolutely tasteless. Perhaps we ordered the wrong items but we followed our waitress’s recommendations on all three items which were singled out as Soi38’s best dishes. What happened? Has the kitchen chef changed since my first visit? While the ambience & service were good, we left terribly disappointed with the poor quality of the food. Unlikely to return as we can probably find better Thai food in the suburbs.

We found no one at reception, we were seated by the same person who waited on Us. Long wait for drinks, & were asked numerous times to order. I felt rushed, however the food was pretty tasted. Liked the food;the waitress left a lot to be desired. Since we there at 6:00p.m.the restaurant was basically empty. No need for the rush & indifference.

I highly recommend Soi 38. I frequently host business lunches here. The selection is wonderful and I've never had anything bad. The chicken hot pot and chicken pad thai are my favorites. You can also get a Thai iced tea for $3. The prices of the food are in the moderate range at lunch but the portions are so large I almost always have leftovers for the next day!

Food was really good. I asked for mild and my dish wasn't as mild as I hoped but was very good. It was a cold night and every time someone opened the door, the cold draft was terrible. I recommend they add a curtain or a air door to help with that. It bothered all our group and several other diners too. Otherwise great food.

I met some friends who live in D.C. while I was visiting. I was looking for a place close to my hotel and saw Soi 38. The food was excellent and fresh. Service was fast and friendly. Everyone at the table enjoyed their meal. The food was truly outstanding. It was so good, I almost went back the next day by myself.

Come to Soi 38 for the best Thai food outside of Thailand. We will be making more special trips to DC just to eat here. Amazingly good.

The food was very tasty, although my heat tolerance isn't what it used to be. The spicy pork was too spicy for us, but it was rated at 3 peppers, so we should have asked. The duck was very good, as was the satay. I ordered pineapple fried rice to take home, and it was luscious the next day. Since that is one of my favorite foods, I might just trek up to the restaurant for lunch when it gets warmer.

The food was great as usual. It was holiday season and there was a BIG group that came in 20min into our meal so the noise level became almost unbearable. At other non-holiday occasions, the vibe is just right.

Food was good, authentic flavors, but somewhat suspect noodles in both of our dishes resembling spaghetti or angel hair pasta more than traditional Thai rice noodles. Whole experience got off to an unpleasant start, the super self-important host we'll call 'Mr. Poneytail' greeted us with a terse "reservations?" and showed us to our table without another word. Service was more what you'd expect, though very rushed as though needing desperately to turn the table over. Apps out immediately, followed by main courses 5 minutes later. Check dropped with a cursory "coffee or anything else?". 30 minutes in and out, fine if you're in a rush but hardly what you'd expect in a "fine dining" experience.

The food is delicious! There are a lot of tasty shrimp dishes, but very little for vegetarians. It can be crowded for weekday lunches but the service is fast.

It wasn't Banglamphu street food, but it was pretty darned good. The requisite condiments dolly - with ground bird chilis - was there, and a sort of nam pla prik was was provided with my meal (I had asked the waitress for the Thai pronunciation of chili+fish sauce, maybe it was just coincidence that it arrived with my meal). Soi 38 is the kind of place and quality that you might find in a decent BKK restaurant. Which means excellent for DC.

Splendid Thai cuisine. Soi 38 offers authentic dishes beautifully presented, interesting cocktails and responsive service. Clearly well-managed. One of my go-to Asian restaurants in Foggy Bottom/West End.

Great find. The 🌶 🌶🌶 really is very spicy! And that's coming from someone who loves spicy. It was way too much for the rest of my party. Be advised!

We were a party of four. The hostess seated us promptly and our waitress introduced herself right away and helped us make delicious menu choices.
We were delighted with our meal from appetizers to desert. We especially loved the ginger duck and mango /sticky rice. Lovely service, beautiful decor and great ambiance will surely have us coming back.

I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of Soi 38's menu, it is far from just pad Thai and curries, with several dishes from central and northern Thailand. Also, the quality is very good, as are the cocktails--both in strength and taste. Soi 38 goes into my top southeastern Asian restaurants, along with Thip Khao and Little Serrow.

Dropped in after a cruise on the Potomac because she had a hankering for Asian grub.

The night was warm but not too humid, so we enjoyed our seats on 21st Street.

My Northern Thai minced pork dish was wonderfully spicy. She took home about half of her shrimp entrée and enjoyed it the following day.

Service was friendly and efficient and the bartender generous.

We will return to Soi 38.

Saw an episode of "Bizarre Foods" on the Travel Channel that featured cuisine from Chiang Mei in northern Thailand. One dish that appealed was Nam Prik Ong, a spicy pork dip. Checked online and saw Soi 38 had that on its menu, so walked down to try it. It was very tasty and will get me back there monthly.
