Chifley's Bar & Grill
Paying homage to the past, with inspiration from today, the team creates a unique experience for diners in a classically elegant yet beautifully refurbished dining room, which extends to a glassed-in terrace overlooking the hotel gardens.
The menu caters to discerning travellers, the local diplomat or business person with honest, classic but inventive dishes – steaks married with superfood salads and dishes designed for sharing. A quality wine list offers variety of local and international wines.
The 1920s marked the birth of the modern restaurant era when eating out was no longer confined to the elite and leisure travel became open to everyone. Today the restaurant’s warm nostalgic interiors are inviting to all. They provide a place for a quick bite or drink at the bar, to celebrate a special occasion with family and friends or relax at a summer acoustic session in the garden.

Always reliable, this is my go-to Steakhouse/Grill in Canberra. I love the Ben Chifley backstory. The salads complement the steaks with well matched wines. Looking forward to my next trip to the Nation's Capital. The photo features the deconstructed Pavlova.
For starters, we got the mixed entree to share. It was definitely the highlight of the night! Could not fault it and great variety and worth the $40. Mains were no where near as good and not good value for money. The quail came on a bed of green salad leaf and a coue of cherry tomatos with wild rice- wasnt the best combination. We also had fish of the day which was a small piece of mahi mahi on a cauliflower puree and a few bits of dices veggies. For the $35 you pay, better off just getting a coue of the mixed entrees to share for better value for money. Service was great and prompt as well.
Unfortunately for us the night we dined at the restaurant there was a wedding on (150 people?) so we were moved to a small room next to the restaurant, so I can't give a good assessment. The food however was great and so were the 2 breakfasts we had there the next 2 days.
Great customer service and menu. Our steak was cooked to perfection and the cheese platter was very generous.
Becoming a bit of an annual affair for us. The Chiffley Bar &Grill at the Hotel Kurrajong has excellent staff, a very good menu and plenty of ambience to suit special occasions!
Pleasantly surprised. Food was excellent. Lovely ambience. The beef tenderloin with mushroom sauce was a clear winner. Give the restaurant a go! You won't be disappointed
Our meals were absolutely delicious!
My partner and I celebrated our 20 years together and it was a lovely evening. Couldn't fault it. Thank you.
Pleasant place with nice ambience and history. Good food at reasonable price
The ‘twice-cooked’ pork belly had not been cooked long enough as it was chewy and tough. No crackling either. Flavors of the apple and pork were nice, however, for that price, you expect tender meat that barely needs chewing. Disappointed.
The venue, service and ambience were good but we found the food to be very ordinary. The bill was incorrect and we were billed for an extra meal and coffees that we had not been informed would cost extra - but we noticed and the bill was changed.
We probably won't be back for breakfast again.
An unexpected "jewel" in a dated crown. The Kurrajong Hotel is a fairly standard 4 star hotel in the "trendy" Barton vicinity of the National Gallery in Canberra.
The Chifley Restaurant delivers far more than you would expect. Good menu, moderate prices, and the service was caring, professional, and friendly. The food quality was the equal of a higher profiled restaurant - our steak was "perfect" and the fish the same.
Beaut desserts, well priced wines, a great option that might not be cool, but a very enjoyable meal that we would return to.
The seafood platter was very dissapointing. The salmon and what I think was sword fish was extremely over cooked and dry. This was mentioned to the waiter and I received an apology and that my feedback would be provided to the chef. However, I ended up with a seafood platter with fish that was inedible, no replacement and full price still charged.
Very happy with Chifleys bar and grill would definitely go there again
Seafood mixed grill is a lovely and big meal for 2.
We were visiting Canberra for a birthday celebration and visit to the Cartier Exhibition. Chifley’s was easy to book. It was close to our hotel. The menu was viewable online which helped as one of us is a fussy eater. Parking was confusing as had to park on the street. On the side road parking was 5 minutes and had no end time.
We were very disappointed with the steak dinner. The meat was not cooked as per order, was over cooked (twice) and was charred (burnt) and therefore bitter on the outside.
The seafood entree was delicious and properly cooked.
The manager was apologetic and tried hard to make up for our disappointment, so deserves much credit, and the waiter was very obliging.
Overall, we expected tablecloths and special service as we had an excellent dining experience three years ago (2015 when we had our Golden Wedding Anniversary as guests here), but feel that it was now a bistro experience.
We stayed at the Hotel Kurrajong and dined at Chifleys for dinner. We enjoyed the shared seafood plate and thought the Boozy Caramel Apple Crumble for dessert was outstanding. Great rum and raisin ice cream!
Arrived early, checked in and went to bar. Staff did not communicate after our drinks were told we were late and table no longer available. Blushes all round from staff saw us seated shortly thereafter. Food good not not a great experience. Our coffees did not arrive but on bill and removed on our request.
Our room was comfortable and clean. High Tea was lovely and we all enjoyed, we would have liked a little more time to sit and enjoy, the tour made that part feel a little rushed. The chairs did have crumbed on them and when we arrived at dinner, different table again the chairs had crumbs on them. Dinner was good, although none of us found a dish that jumped out at us and said eat me. When our meals where delivered, it was in a good time frame, they looked nice and they tasted nice, however, the same thing we didn’t feel that they where special. We arrived for breakfast at 9:45am and although there was still a good selection of food, all the cooked food was barely warm. The coffee machine gave warm water and we ended up ordering coffee, tea and a Latte from the waitress, which was hot. Your staff where lovely, happy and helpful.
I would not discourage anyone from going to the Kurrajong, but for anything really special I would not recommend.
Not overly impressed with the food or service.
Wait staff were nice, however, forgetful.
Steak was a little chewier than I would have expected for a restaurant with such good previous reviews.
Interior is lovely with an old worldly feel.
Great space inside & outside to chat & have a drink
My husband and I live coming here for its old world charm, with great food and service. Unfortunately last week I took the in laws to lunch for a birthday occasion. After talking Chifleys up, it became awkward! Initially the service was fabulous... and I’m not sure if it was the wait staff or kitchen, but if you feel it essential to memorise the order, it needs to come out correctly!! No one will care if there’s a pen and paper present, if that is what it takes.
Maybe there was new chefs/kitchen on? Seriously people, we all (4) ordered sandwiches - at ~$20 a pop mind you. No feta on the vegetarian, no pickles on the Reuben, chips and salad all mixed up.
Yes, there are bigger things to worry about in the world - there are also plenty of other places in Canberra to get excited about.
Hoping this is taken constructively, it may have been one of those days. Cheers
Service was excellent and we were really impressed with the food. Thanks to our male server who ensured that my friend and I had a wonderful evening celebrating a long overdue reunion.
Lovely heritage venue and nice menu, but my steak was a bit tough and the service was a bit patchy. There was a wedding reception on at the same time at the hotel so I expect a better experience without that distraction.
Food was absolutely beautiful, with decor to match. Classy and stylish. Highly recommend dining there. Great value and great service.
The hotel is probably a training venue given the numbers of "Trainee" badges worn by hotel, bar and restaurant staff, which is fine by me... but some sort of up-front information about this to the guests would help them to understand why the staff don't really understand the running of the hotel or the restaurant.
The greeter at the restaurant should not ask the newly arrived guests to wait for 5 minutes whilst she enters data into the computer about previous accounts. Instead, show the guests to their booked table, take a drinks order, deliver it quickly...these should be the first priorities...then customers and management are both off to a good start on the evening dining experience.
Excellent food. The steak was excellent and cooked perfectly.
I am wheat free, lactose free with no added sugar. I explained this to the very polite wait staff, who then explained to the chef and the chef created versions of the vegetables and gravy that I could have.
I was very appreciative of the effort the staff went to and how polite and understanding they were.
This restaurant can get a bit pricey but, I think it's worth it.
On Tuesday night this week I was invited to dinner with a former work mate from Darwin. He was in town to do some teaching at the Australian National University and asked me out to dinner so long as I could nominate a good place to get a steak. I suggested Chifley's Bar and Grill in Barton. Chifley's Bar and Grill is located in the Kurrajong Hotel.
We both chose the wagyu rump steak which came with a cauliflower purée, cherry tomatoes and beans. My friend also asked for a side of chips. I asked that my steak be cooked rare and to be served with a Bearnaise sauce.
The waiting time between ordering and receiving our plates was relatively short. The service was warm and friendly. The steak was really nice. It was tender, it tasted beefy and the Bearnaise sauce was a great accompaniment. I stole a handful of chips from my friend and they were crunchy and perfectly cooked. I thought the cauliflower purée was a little thin and it didn't have much flavour.
The cost about $AUD48 per meal. I'd come back and eat steak at Chifley's Bar and Grill.
Was a bit disappointed with the salmon steak. Was burnt and rather thin
Very pleasant surroundings, great to see an historic building revived. Good food and serice.
Excellent food. Exemplary service. Magnificent restaurant, could not fault anything..
Perfect.. Perfect .. Perfect..! Thank you and we will be back soon..!
Amazing steak, terrible service. Possibly the most disorganised and unmotivated wait staff I have ever experienced. The food on the other hand was simply magnificent.
Will go there again but only for the food.
Thanks so much for the little birthday surprise for my friend!!
