The European takes the best from Old World Europe and serves them using produce from Australia and Europe. It is open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A set menu is available along with the more traditional menus. The warm wooden tones of the interior set the mood for an old world meal. Come with a partner or a group of friends for dinner and enjoy selections such as the freshly shucked oysters in a red wine shallot vinegar or the Yasa caviar selection. Dine on suckling pig served with black pudding and apple or the rabbit cassoulet. The European boasts a versatile wine list that focuses on European wines that span the continent from Italy to Spain. All bottles listed on the menu are also available for sale to take home with you.

We had a lovely a lovely night at The European with two of our adult sons. The food was interesting and tasty, the only negative, it was a little too salty for our liking. Wines superb and service excellent.
Always a fantastic evening if you have the chance to dine here - the food is consistently excellent, lots of fresh flavours & classic European cuisine - my favourite spot in Melbourne. The only minor issue is SOMETIMES the noise is overwhelming for what is usually an intimate dining experience.
The food was beautifully cooked and was just the right portions. The European wines were complementary to the meal and we finished with a lovely sherry and coffee, all in all, a great experience.
The food and service here is consistently great, but it's an experience that is well over-priced - and, there's not much food. The "large" spaghetti was definitely NOT large. Even the water is ridiculously over-priced (and you'd think they could afford to let that one go a bit). The real stinker was a 15% surcharge for it being a Sunday. Seriously? I mean, it wasn't a public holiday, just a normal Sunday, and the prices are already 'up there' without the extra.
I've eaten here many times because of the food, ambiance and extensive wine list, and it's *very* popular, but Melbourne is replete with other options that I shall be giving more attention to henceforth.
If cost is no issue to you (as it obviously isn't to so many who go here) and you like small portions (or can afford many of them), carry on! Personally, I would like the servings to be larger and the bill to be smaller - but then it would be so popular you'd never get in.
A little disappointed with the marinara. No garlic and little chilli and pasta too tough. Sorry
had a wonderful meal as always and the food and service were up to the expected standard - the noise level inside was certainly elevated so if you are after something quiet or easier to talk amongst more than 2 i suggest outside is the go
The European remains my go-to for business meetings. Food is faultless every time and service charming and efficient, perfect for that one-hour luncheon. Rarely too noisy for good conversation.
This is always a lovely experience- fantastic food, wine and service.
The European never disappoints. The food is fantastic, the wine list is expansive and covers many different varieties at reasonable prices and the staffs knowledge and service is second to none in Melbourne.
Service was superb. Sommelier certainly knew his stuff and wait staff excellent in predicting and attending to need. And the food...just sensational.
Excellent food and service in a great ambiance - could not ask for more
The serve we received before heading to the theatre was great. Our waiter new a lot about the wines and was very cheer funk o manner
Recommended by a friend we both chose one of the specials "spanner crab risotto". Outstanding and just a hint of al dente with the stock/sauce superb. will be back
The food was very good, but the noise level was terrible, the worst I have experienced in a restaurant.
Excellent, as always! High quality food, service and ambiance.
I love the European for breakfast. The coffee is excellent. The avocado on seeded toast with eggs is delicious.
Great atmosphere, great food and wine. Lovely wait staff and thoroughly ‘European’!
Always very good, especially for a work related lunch
Food is always fabulous and a greta wine list. Open late you can always get a great Italian meal at The European
Perfect experience in every way with exception of the bathrooms.....they need a serious renovation.
Absolutely wonderful experience- cannot wait to go back.
The food and wine were superb. A very good service all round, however the experience was somewhat spoiled by an excessively loud background noise. It made it very difficult to chat.
The waite staff are always so well informed when it comes to the menu.
Food and service always spot on and attentive while also managing the fine line of not being intrusive
And coffee is consistently good
We had a Booking after seeing Mama Mia. The night was to celebrate my birthday with my husband and two of my closest friends having eaten here at the European once before and being very happy I thought it was a no-brainer but to my disappointment and we’ll was not the best. My husband and I Shared steak for two and it was full of fat and gristle really disappointing. We Left the fat on the plate so hopefully the Chef could see. For $92 it should have been outstanding like the chateau briand we had on our previous visit.
The duck fat potatoes were nice.
Our favorite restaurant. Has been consistently excellent for many years
Given the wrong duck dish.
Food good but very Expensive. Limited menu. Waiter good but a bit too ingratiating....
Reliable and good quality food. Wine list is over the top but there are some more reasonable choices. Service OK, but had to try a number of times to attract someone's attention to get the bill. Ambience and location good
A Melbourne institution that never lets you down. The service is always exceptional, the food is amazing and plentiful and their wine list is perfect. Their lemon tart is the best I have ever tried!
It was a great experience, staff very professional & food innovative
Excellent wait staff and excellent food. Love the Italian ambience. The atmosphere is classy without being pretentious. Will definitely be back.
Excellent food and service. I would have liked to have the choice to choose a cheaper bottle of wine - we ended up paying $100 for our wine which was very overvalued.
I had the most lovely duck egg with wild mushrooms and red wine sauce... be sure to ask for bread, because you will want to sop up all the beautiful juices with it! Absolutely delicious. With a perfect Scotch and soda. Thank you for such a great traditional restaurant, food, and service. Heart bigly.
An excellent meal! Beautiful steak and horseradish. Lovely wines and friendly service.
Wonderful and genuine European ambience with great food and wine.
Fantastic food and loved the service - friendly but not obtrusive. Good recommendations for food and wine. It can't have been too noisy as I didn't notice - but it wasn't quiet either - just a nice gentle hum of happy people talking.
Outstanding service, with an extensive wine list and exceptional traditional Italian cuisine. Be sure to book in advance and be mindful large groups over nine will require a set menu
Great food, slow disinterested service and extremely noisy
I was seated to a table that was too low in lighting that was difficult for me to read the menu.
Enjoyed a delicious brunch here with a friend and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Good food, great atmosphere and service. Would definitely go back and try other meals.
We loved the food we had , the ambience and attentive service. A great vibe. The recommended wine was excellent too. My husband found it difficult to hear as it is noisy and tales are close together. Also we were unaware we had to leave at 8.30 for the next sitting. I may have overlooked this when I booked. Otherwise we would definitely recommend it for an occasion, more so than casual dining as the bill was higher than we would pay for a meal out normally.
