Public School - Downtown Los Angeles
This location has the WORST service. I really dont wanna destroy their reputation on this but maybe someone will notice and they can turn it around. The restaurant is close to my office so the team goes here often for meals. This time I had to tell the waitress I need utensils, she asked me if I needed a plates for the group appetizers, and we didnt get water until after the food was served, and we were thirsty enough I guess. I enjoy the food often, but I really would like to see an improvement in the quality of service.
If you prefer your dining experience to be in a cacophony of noise, this is the place. You cannot have a conversation with your dining partner nor understand what your server is saying. The food was actually very good and if I was in the mood for an energetic pub then our experience might have been better. Also, the maitre de did not say a word to us at the door, just put up a wait a minute gesture then grabbed 2 menus and started walking to a table. Not a word was said as the menus were placed on our table and she walked off. That probably didn't help set a positive mood. But maybe she realizes that talking makes no sense since the din is too loud to compete with.
Looks adorable. Clever theme. Fair/marginal. staff VERY nice, but forgetful.
Food was great! And reasonably priced. Games were fun while we waited. Enjoyed our stay.
Unfortunately, the restaurant really smelled like fish when we walked in. My pizza was served to me cold and the parking is horrific with nobody standing at the valet stand for a good 20 minutes while we continued to block traffic. Public school theme
was fun but I won’t be back.
Fun place with a variety of food and drink options.
Good food and at a good price. Service was excellent and for lunch importantly we were done in no time.
Amazing service and food!
We picked this restaurant for its moderate prices relative to some of the other options in the area. The food and drinks were all fine, but nothing really stands out at all. Service was quite good, attentive and friendly. I can see the attraction of the games available at the tables although we did not use them this time. All in all it was totally fine, but I'd probably try a new place next time.
Went to watch a soccer game, and do bottomless brush brunch. Was a great choice with a great atmosphere. Brunch menu is nothing special however.
Even though it's advertised as bottomless, the first thing the waitress tells you is that you only get three carafes.
I called ahead to make sure there was a vegan option, and they said yes, Impossible burger. Arrived with my party to find out they had been out of the impossible burger for days had had no other vegan entree options.
Really fun place with games to play at the table, good food and the service was excellent.
No. Food was really, really poor and very disappointing.
Our waiter was barely present leaving us with no drinks for the majority of our visit. We ordered two appetizers and two entrees and they all came at the same time. We told the manager (who delivered the entrees) it would have been nice to have had a moment to eat our apps first and he just mumbled sorry dropped the entrees and left. The food was ok, nothing special. But the service (or lack thereof) pretty much sealed the deal that this was a one and done experience at this place.
So loud in there this time and the food was not up to the level it had been on past visits. Disappointing.
Food was amazing!
Food was excellent. Fun atmosphere with decks of cards and games that could be played at your table. Cocktail was delicious when we received it 30 minutes into our meal. Had to ask the busboy for it as we never saw our waitress again after ordering. A different waiter asked how our food was. Never received a refill on my soda, and had to flag a different waiter down to get our check. On the taste of the food, I would try another Public School location but won’t be back to the downtown LA restaurant.
The impossible burger!!! So good!!!!
Food was good service was poor. Been there a few times now but won’t go again because of the service
Impossible burger was the best veggie burger I have ever had!
Great place for brunch. They ran out of mimosas but everything else was good.
Unique menu with lots of interesting dishes to choose from. Our waitress. Ashley, was charming and we will be certain to return the next time we are in LA.
Atmosphere was great. Food was quite good.
Unfortunately, we waited nearly 10 minutes until a server came by to the table. We had to back to the hostess and complained. Finally, The manager took our orders, but did not know the menu items that well.
Friendly service. Prompt with the table. Great recommendations. Not to expensive. Lots of food. Delicious.
The fish and chips were great. It's a noisy place, though, so keep that in mind.
Stone and concrete floors make it much too loud to talk when the place is full. Food was OK, but not great and service was a bit slow
The biggest thing preventing a 5-star rating was the fact they were out of multiple Happy Hour beers and hinted at possible replacements, but refused to honor any replacements.
The validated valet parking worked great. The quality of the food was excellent
A little loud for our prospective client meeting but everyone liked the food and had a nice time.
Service was too slow. Food portions are too small.
I had dinner plans for 6 of us at another spot. Turns out that place was closed Saturday for a wedding reception. Ugh... Bonaventure concierge suggested Public School, and it was a great choice. We had a 16 year old vegan in our party and she felt awesome when the waitstaff gave her their vegan menu. The kids played Monopoly while we adults enjoyed the 'Recess' menu. Food and drinks! Great ambiance and fantastic service. 1 warning, it is loud and, depending on where you sit, conversations can be rough. They also have a private room for parties and such. We'll be back.
Been wanting to eat here for a while. So glad I finally had time. Everything looks amazing!!!
The service was excellent!
First of all, I want to say that Public School in Downtown is super cool. They have a game room with beer pong, corn hole, Connect Four, and Jenga as well as board games that you could play at your table if you were seated outside the game room. The food was good, the drinks were good, the atmosphere was fun, and the service was good... The only complaint I had is that they allowed children in the game room on St. Patrick's Day to play beer pong. Granted, it was beer pong with water BUT we spent a TON of money on drinks and food that day and on a drinking holiday, it would have been great to not be stuck around children who were easily under the age of 10.
Was an early lunch with a work friend. We both ordered the slaw with our meal and was VERY surprised to find peanuts in it. Neither of us liked it nor do we remember it being mentioned on the menu. The peanut flavor overpowered the slaw.
The food was good and the service was excellent. I enjoyed it.
Booked a table and got sat in a dark corner in the bar under a tv not in their nice light restaurant area.
Food was poor, service was slow and sloppy. Would not go back
Went for the second night in a row because there were not a lot of other walkable options between a conference and basketball crowd in the area. For the second night in a row the service was terrible. Servers disappear and while others offer to help it never comes. The manager came over and, I’m not kidding, offered me a card for free cauliflower during my next visit. My friend got free fries! What a joke. It’s a shame because the food is really good and the high school theme is fun.
This visit was disappointing. I was with two friends and we were placed in the back room— fine, but there was one server for the entire room and she seemed overwhelmed. Service was very minimal. She forgot that I ordered brunch without dairy (due to allergy), and they had to remake my dish later. I got the basic 2 eggs, bacon and potatoes, and the second dish came with one little overeasy egg (despite menu saying 2 eggs). Trivial perhaps, but the meal looked pretty sad. Maybe this is a good spot if you’re up front, ordering bottomless mimosas and apps.
Good and the mimosas were reasonably priced.
