Interesting old recipes with a modern twist. Lovely Victorian decor, though I feel the waitresses could have worn something more in keeping
Amazing experience, once in a life time if you get the opportunity!!
Excellent fine dining at the right price for the exquisite fare. Great modern takes on oldey worldey recipes. Will definitely stump up for more on the next special occasion or a special foody visitor.
Second time and it was just as special as last time!
A very relaxed setting, a bit like a home dining room. Excellent service. Interesting and tasty food.
An amazing evening - no idea why I hadn't heard about this place sooner. Historical recipes given a modern presentation, amazing flavours and textures - some of which were totally new to me. The ambience created by the decor and the little nods to Victorian dining tradition is totally matched by the food - it was such a fun and interesting evening. Thank you so much for an fabulous experience. We are now your unpaid viral marketing team! See you soon for the 9 course menu.
Just amazing! Very very special concept and place. Thanks so much!! It's a must do if in Bristol!
Fantastic experience dining taking food from British history and updating it for the modern palate.
We tried the early bird menu and was absolutely fantastic. Very tasty and excellent service. Thanks.
Michelin star worthy food in a historical setting. A bit out the way but worth a taxi ride for sure!
Superb! Highly recommended. Brilliant food and an amazing experience.
Delicious food and friendly staff who were happy to explain anything on the menu, as well as to help us find a taxi to get home afterwards. Thanks so much for going the extra mile to provide alternatives for those of us with allergies, too!
A very interesting and delicious menu and good value for the 9 course menu.
Service was attentive and they were well prepared to answer any questions about the meal or its origins.
A little gem in an unusual but comfortable setting.
Will definitely go again.
Truly outstanding dining experience. Our party of five, aged 6 to 75, all thoroughly enjoyed the whole 'afternoon tea' experience. It was an indulgent lunch starting with a nibble of Eccles cake through to divine chocolate meringue drops, by way of mock crab, lobster sandwiches and squirrel pie! I can barely wait for another excuse to go again.
Did not know what to expect but right from the start this restaurant did not dissapoint. The service was both friendly and efficient and the waitress understood the dishes and wines that were on offer. We had the 5 course tasting menu and each dish was expertly prepared and presented. Lots of flavours though my two outstanding dishes were the Asparagus Icecream and broth and the dessert. We shall ceratinlky be back.
The quality of the food produced is excellent, such a combination if tastes and flavours all beautifully presented. The early evening menu is ridiculously good value. Highly recommended. Dining room was sadly a bit empty so the atmosphere a little muted but thats just unfortunate timing and didnt detract from the overall experience that much.
Great idea, and great execution...You ring a bell to be admitted. Our dining area was on the second floor, with high ceilings, and beautiful windows and furnishings. Beethoven chamber music surrounds you, and then the menu. Interesting options with recipes from 1600-1890. We had the 3 course early dinner special as we were leaving England the next morning at 4 AM. For starters, our sons had Pigeon Compote, I had Asparagus Ice Cream and my wife had the Ling fish and salmon peel. Mine has an oval of asparagus ice cream with sugar coated peanuts, and the waitress poured a puree of asparagus soup along side it, with sliced radishes and various green accent pieces. It was terrific! I won't get into the rest of the meal, but each of us cleaned our plates with every course. We each got a small glass of wine with the 3 course meal, and we ordered a bottle as well, which was very good and reasonably priced. You pay for bread but it is served in a very interesting manner and was also delicious. The waitress was very good, and explained each serving we received. She was very attentive. You almost felt like you were transported to a different time and place while having such an excellent meal.
The boys thought it was cool and delicious; my wife and I agreed. I hope to get back again when we visit our son again, and would definitely go for the 5 course meal.
My trip was great, as others have mentioned an unassuming entrance behind the Star and Dove pub....but from ringing the door bell you are transported in to a bygone world as per the name Historic Dinning Room. We had the 9 course tasting menu, each course was themed around an historical dish brought to a very high modern gastronomic standard. Supported by a wine list that majored a number of UK sparkling and white wines...All in all a great experience and whilst not cheap excellent value for money. From me strongly recommended.
Had a lovely evening in the restaurant - came home feeling full but calmed and relaxed at the same time. Food is amazing, service is excellent, particularly when we went on a quiet evening in the middle of the week, the dining room transports you back at least a century or two! Interesting organ too.
Our 2nd visit to historical rooms. The food is unusual and the chef is excellent. Hope to return again.
Delicious and imaginative food, excellent service and a beautiful room. A hidden gem. We had the three-course early evening meal, for around £20 per head, and the food was exceptional for the price. People should support this place!
A gem in Bristol! Fantastic value for money, excellent service and an unique atmosphere.
This was a fantastic experience. We went for the 9 course meat and fish menu and were truly impressed. We were welcomed by a lovely waitress who explained how things worked and the ethos of the restaurant. 9 very tasty dishes and we were truly satisfied. I've paid a lot more for similar "experiences" so I think £50 for the 9 course taster menu (without wine) represents good value. Would highly recommend!
Tucked away in just south of the hustle and bustle of the City Centre is this gem of a dining experience. We were greeted with an opportunity to enjoy a cocktail while reviewing the menu before being ushered through to a small dining area with a very personal feel. We chose the 9-course menu with drinks pairing, and this proved to be an amazing taste explosion. Each course was explained by the attentive staff and the drinks matched perfectly. Taking a gluten free option did not detract one bit, and it was great to see that the kitchen coped so admirably and with such imagination. This is not an inexpensive dining experience but the value for money could not be questioned. A particular highlight was the Michelin-star like service, maybe the best I have experienced in Bristol. A fantastic evening all round!

I had been looking forward to visiting the Dining Rooms for a while and was not disappointed. It took a few moments to work out how to get into the restaurant but once in, I was greeted by name and led to a cosy themed room to have a (very strong) cocktail (my partner had a beer). The service was fantastic all evening. Staff had such an enthusiastic knowledge of the food and wine and I tried many things I had never heard of before. All were delicious, and presented with care and imagination. Many of the ingredients came from the restaurant's own garden. We tried the 5 course 'bill of fare' with wine but I can't wait to come back and try the 9 course...If you love food, come here ASAP.
Outstanding, unusual food. Attentive staff and relaxing ambience.
Exquisite food and fantastic attention to detail in menu, ambience and service. The Christmas Pye was to die for! Our hostess seemed know everything about everything. I couldn't fault anything. Least of all the price. I say give it a try, you won't be disappointed.
A very unique and wonderful experience. The food is out of this world and the services the exceptional.
Each dish is explained and presented perfectly and the atmosphere of the setting is very welcoming but remains professional. Would recommend without hesitation.

Thank you for such a lovely evening. The food was terrific. The best we've ever had.
So unique, so exceptionally well done. Lovely staff, really knowledgeable & not shoving it in your face but also passionate about it when asked. Like it's the first time they've been able to tell the story of each dish.
I had the 9 course vegetarian dinner & it was just £40. Course number 5 was the best thing I've ever eaten.
I can't recommend it enough. Make sure you go for the whole evening. This is not the sort of place you want to rush.
Deliciously different food in an interesting setting. Absolutely loved our visit, would love to go back. It's not cheap but definitely worth every penny, especially for a special occasion.
Had the most amazing experience at Historic dining room, the food was superb and the knowledge of the waiting staff made it very theatrical, a truly wonderful evening
A totally unique experience.. The 7 course vegetarian tssting menu with dishes from 1390 on. Every one a surprise and every one superb.
Absolute fantastic culinary experience, brilliantly presented and supplied with a narrative that gives the background and creativity of the dish.
The service was impeccable and 'super efficient' - delivered with a lovely smile and friendly attitude.
Will be looking forward to our next opportunity in the future!
From the moment we walked in the service was wonderful. The brilliant waitress took the time to answer all our questions about the food and the decor. The food was also wonderful. We hadn't even heard of some of the ingredients but we loved nearly every dish on the tasting menu. The ling fish and the rabbit were delicious and the pre dessert was one of the tastiest things I have ever eaten. It was worth every penny and we really hope this restaurant is a huge success. It deserves to be.
Having been to the Historical Dining Room at a few occasions in the past, we were very excited to hear it was re-opening after a 18 months break.
We love how the place has been refurbished, giving it a further historical look. We also love how well we got welcomed at our arrival.
The food served was delicious, and the wine selection perfect.
We however got slightly disappointed by the whole experience as we remembered something slightly different. We used to love the place for being experimental (we remember eating fish bones and mussels shelves), and for all the explanations that were spontaneously given to us by the staff about what we had in our plates and how it has been cooked, + history of where the recipes came from. We didn't get any of this, making it less enjoyable than in our memories.
It was a nice evening, and we would recommend the place. We however hope that they will bring back the elements that were missing on this occasion.
