Hill Street Bar & Restaurant
My husband and I had 5:30 pm reservations before our show at The Ahmanson that started at 8 pm in celebration of our 17 year wedding anniversary on Sat., Aug. 10, 2019. We parked at the Music Center for $9.00 and walked the two blocks down the hill to the restaurant. Jessica was the host and our waitress. She is GREAT! We shared the Hill Street Burger with the fries. The burger was DELICIOUS and so moist and the fries were great too with some Ranch Dressing. I enjoyed a glass of Angeline Chardonnay (that Jessica suggested) and my husband got the Old Fashioned. We took our time and got out of there for $50.00 (generous tip included) and walked back up the BIG hill to the Theatre to see our show The Play That Goes Wrong by 7:15 pm. Gave us enough time to stop and take pictures in front of the Walt Disney Concert Hall and use the restroom in the Ahmanson. Would definitely go there again.
Very tasty food, good friendly service, fair price, especially on wine list. Great for pre-theater. Only small complaint, we were seated next to the bar during happy hour, and it was a bit noisy.
Amazing food with great variety, satisfactory service, but the restaurant was probably 80 degrees when I ate there around 7pm, my family and I were literally sweating so I can’t do 5 stars.
I came after the lunch rush so the place was quiet. What a find! Located in a secondary venue of the Kawada Hotel, the soaring ceilings let in a lot of natural light and my server tells me that when they can open their pair of wall-sized garage windows the place is really relaxed. Today everything was closed tight to keep the air conditioning in, which was a blessing. The music and environment is tidy. My server was professional and clean, and recommended the burgers, chicken sandwiches, and salads, but I settled for Hill Street's French Dip. My goodness. Shaved prime rib cooked to medium and layered between halves of a soft, absorbent bolillo roll - which has been kissed with house-made jalapeno ranch dressing - is presented with a thick horseradish cream on the side and a perfect portion of onion au jus. Hill Street certainly didn't invent the LA Classic but it's brought in a serious contender!
I'll be back for Happy Hour, which offers some of their menu items at a discount and standard-but-decent drink specials. I had a great view of the Walt Disney Concert Hall at the top of Grand Street, too, which means this place isn't a bad choice for pre-theater dinner - if you don't mind the walk, of course.
Looking forward to trying the burger!
Service was on the slower side but we arrived right at the end of Happy Hour. Food was great. Would definitely go again when I'm not in a rush.
Watched multiple tables walk out. Waiting 45 minutes for one meal got tho other three meals came an hour and a half later. We stayed cause the waitress was so nice and apologetic. But at some point it was such a disaster it was funny. I don’t think the owner/manager has any experience. If they do it was hard to see.
his was our first time here. We had a reservation party of 10. We were all seated by 5:50 pm. We were there for a pre show dinner with friends. That meant we had 1 hour 50 min to eat no problem right?
Service was slow to begin with, then got slower.
Service was -2 stars if the app allowed it along the entire 2 hours we were there
Drinks arrived in fits and starts.
Appetizer (garlic bread and chips quac/queso. We’re ok, but the server didn’t suggest we order 2 each for the table and they took 30 min to come out of the kitchen. Since we didn’t have time to order another of each we didn’t
Dinner order was taken at the shortly after drinks arrived. It took FOREVER for everyone to actually get their drink. The server/expediter had no idea where the drinks were supposed to go they came one or two at a time, so every time they came to the table it required a full conversation stop, while we figured it out. Then we waited and waited and waited. Did get in a second drink order, same poor service.
And we waited some more. Finally after more than an hour the first few entrees came out. 15 min later most of the rest, finally at 15 min prior to our departure time, the last 2 arrived. The person sitting next to me had the same order as myself, so I gave him half my sandwich so he would start. After most people had finished eating a couple of the missing salads started showing up.
Most of the food was meh. We joked they maybe didn’t have a kitchen and were ordering off grub hub
When the check arrived (we asked for it after the last entree arrived because we were now running out of time) we were told that added a 20% gratuity. While I usually tip a bit more than that, this service was so so bad I may have reduced it.
This may be an ok place for parties of 2, they were in no way prepared to handle a group.
Great service; great happy hour; good food and nice mix of choices; nice ambience. Definitely recommend this place for a nice but low key dinner lunch or just to meet friends for drinks after work or before the theater.
I had the French Dip which was made with thinly sliced rib-eye. It was fantastic! I have had many a French Dips in my time, many of them very good, and I have to say Hill Street's is one of the best I've eaten. My wife loved the salmon as well. We will definitely be back.
Music Center close with excellent food.
The food was good, but not great. Service was good, drinks ok, a good place to go for dinner before a concert at Disney Hall.
Awesome food. They got us in and out quickly so we could make it up to the theater on time.
Great service. Excellent food. Outstanding drinks. Will come back for sure!
Way too loud. Couldn’t have a conversation. My Food was cool and lacked flavor. My date’s food was better. Cute place and great service.
The restaurant was great food was awesome the drinks were great to the waiter very helpful
Absolute delight to sit and enjoy the food and the beautiful corner spot of the location. I just enjoyed a show with my friend and this was an amazing follow up to close out the day for us. The Hillstreet burger melted in my mouth and the ingredients and sauce was the perfect amount. Hillstreet’s soups were amazing too! I had the Tomato Bisque last time with their incredible grilled cheese and I tasted my friends Hillstreet chili that was ordered with a side of potatoes which was very delicious. I can’t get enough of this place and I am happy they are in Downtown!
Pretty close to Disney Center, Music Center and City Hall. Solid food, flavorful, large servings in a modern setting.
Had a great Lunch! Servers, runner, and bar worked together to provide great service with a smile! Our server was upbeat, friendly, informative, and professional. Some places have a staff that's wishing they didn't have to do lunch service, but not theses guys! Their service made us want to return, and try dinner as well.... thanks, guys, we'll be back!
This restaurant and bar is an absolute gem. My husband and I had date night and it was just what the Doctor ordered.
The food was delicious and very reasonably priced for a downtown locale. All the staff we interacted with obviously enjoy what they are doing.
If I worked downtown, this is where I would go after for a bar bite & cocktail.
The online pics don't do it justice. It looks better!
Food was great, service was a bit slow. Overall very good.
We went before the Ahmanson theater. We walked from the parking lot there and then to the theater . The food is good. The service is lacking. It feels as though the servers don't have certain tables and so no one is actually in charge of your table. Everyone would ask if we needed anything and we were never sure if what we asked for would be there or not. It seemed like the hostess was really the one taking care of us. She took our drink order, someone else took our appetizer order and a third person took our salad and entree order. We shared an appetizer, salad and an entree. The salad and entree came at the same time, the table wasn't large enough for those two plates and share plates so we just ate off the plate and traded halfway through. There were other things about the service that were lacking....honestly....if they would improve the service, this would be a great restaurant and a great place to go before the music center. Like I said, the food was delicious.
With practically no one in the restaurant we waited forever to place our order. I asked for water three times before they brought it. After complaining to the waiter he brought some complementary cookies. Then asked for the check and waited another 10 minutes to get that.
This was our first visit before a show at the Ahmanson. Clean decor and the food was tasty. We shared a caesar salad to start. My wife had the short rib and I had the chicken. Both were cooked nicely with good sized portions. Enough for leftovers and no dessert. Give this place a chance.
Very romantic ambiance. Unfortunately I couldn’t put enough salt on the food. Absolutely NO flavor. I had the pasta, friends had tortilla soup and the chicken dish and they complained of the same issue. We shared a calamari and had the same issue. Our drinks were also terrible. I had the mai tai and the sangria. So disappointing.
With only a half-full restaurant, the service was slow and ineffective. We were seated, no one served our table water or took orders for another 10 minutes. The one server was also working as hostess, and not keeping track of tables. She finally realized this and apologized. This needs improvement.
We should have left when we saw the dead rose buds on the table. On every table. We asked, is this rose old or is it an art statement. The hostess shrugged, "Circle of life, y'know." People waited to be served. The barman seated us a waiter, still with his backpack on delivered the food. Another waiter tried to do it all. A manager (?) wanted to help but didn't seem to know what to do. In fact, everyone seemed a bit lost. Apparently, 2 staff members didn't show up, but this place was completely unprepared for customers. Worse, most of the patrons were trying to have a pre-concert meal & were anxious about getting finished on time. I had to ask for my bill, then take it up to the bar to pay.
That said, the food was fantastic. And moderately priced. If this place can get it together to serve people, it is one of the better places to go in DTLA. Yes, I'll try it again. I cannot recommend it without qualifications.
The food, the staff and the ambience were amazing. I especially like the chop salad. The Decore was very cool and open.
