Since 1963, we have been offering the best of traditional edo-mae (Tokyo) style Japanese dishes from Sukiyaki and Tempura to Sushi and multi-course Kaiseki.
A restaurant of firsts, Nippon was the first Japanese restaurant to serve Sushi in NYC, and made global headlines when founder successfully petitioned the FDA to allow fugu-blowfish to be imported to the U.S. Nippon is also the birthplace of the Beef Negimayaki and many other dishes that are now standard fare in Japanese restaurants around the world. In addition, Nippon makes its own premium quality ni-hachi soba-noodles and presses its own tofu.

Had the winter Kaiseki it was to die for! Super delicious and interesting. Service was okay could of been better. Dessert was a matcha tiramisu made with tofu which I didn’t care for.
Great service. Welcomed nicely by staff
Excellent food and service!! The staff were so attentive and made sure our 14-month-old daughter was entertained and well-fed the whole time! The food was authentic and delicious - and beautiful presentations. Also - solid outdoor heaters!! Highly recommend.
Wonderful caring owners and staff, exceptional service and wonderful food.
Overall experience was amazing, from the time we walked up. Customer service was very pleasant and every dish we ordered were what we expected-DELICIOUS!
Food and service was very good but the road is very noise and busy. It’s not their fault but it was hard to have a conversation. I will go for indoor dining next time.
I love Nippon.
In light of the pandemic, I appreciated the PPE partitions. The service was excellent. The sushi was delicious.
excellent food... outdoor seating is not the best option, but no no choice in this matter at the moment
Service was great and food was delicious.
3 year Anniversary. They brought out a bottle of Moët to share with my fiancé.
Restaurant Nippon was an absolutely perfect dining experience. My newlywed, Husband and I ventured out for a special date night dinner, and the staff at Restaurant Nippon gave us the absolute best experience. Better than we could have hoped for! Everyone was incredibly kind and had so much pride for their restaurant and food. The ambiance was gorgeous and the best COVID safe set up I've seen in the city! Tons of space between tables, hand sanitizers on all the tables, the staff had masks and shields on. There set up had beautiful flowers and greenery. The food was exceptional. The yellowfin tuna sushi was delicious! All of the food we had was A+. Highly recommend this restaurant for a special night out. It felt like a little piece of normal in this crazy COVID world. Thank you to the entire staff for giving us an exceptional evening!
Outside dining was fun. Our waitress was so attentive always making sure our saki cup was full. Food was delicious
Great food and service! Dishes were very detailed and servers were very welcoming and attentive.
I have dined at Nippon many times and I always love it. Their sidewalk tent setup is fantastic and sitting outside is extremely pleasant!
As best as possible on the street. Very accommodating.
Small sushi servings for the price. Even during this challenging time for restaurants we were pretty disappointed. We left the place hungry after having spent some significant dough. That said, the staff were very friendly and attentive.
Seated outside. Very friendly service. Sashimi is fresh. Sushi Rice is average. Great miso soup .
Great food, efficient service, and an outstanding ambience for curbside. Nippon took the current circumstances and create an environment reminiscent of Japanese style street. Not only did they adapt but they also elevated it.
We had a great time there! We were met by a group of people that worked there that were all eager to assist us. We sat outside, and they were super diligent about our safety during the pandemic. Food was great! We would love to go back again. It was my girlfriends birthday and they surprised us with an ice cream plate and sung her happy birthday- honestly, the BEST green tea ice cream we’ve ever had
Outstanding Japanese food--the soba is handmade daily and every dish is a delight. Lunch and dinner offer comfortable outdoor seating, caring service and outstanding quality
The service was wonderful. Definitely no complaints there. Food quality however, was awful. We ordered the sushi lunch. For $42: You get 8 pieces of nigiri and your choice of roll. I chose the spicy tuna. I wish I had a pic to show. The quality of sushi was no better than what I would get at a supermarket. The spicy tuna roll was a plain tuna and a tuna meager piece with a ton of rice. The food quality did not warrant the price. What we were paying for was to eat on the streets in midtown. Very disappointed and won’t be back.
A very delightful outside seating experience with beautiful music and separation from the road and other diners. Delicious sushi and overall wonderful time!
I’ll put 5 stars for the ambiance because had I been able to sit inside it would have been wonderful as it’s absolutely lovely. The outdoor dining is just what it is but that’s not on them, they try. The food was very cool and just what a foodie like me loves to try. It was beautifully presented, inventive, and super fresh. Also really, really great value. The kind of kaiseki menu I would’ve paid way more for. Staff were also very kind and welcoming.
They don't take your reservations seriously. Smells like trash on the street too
This is another instance where Yelp gets it wrong, and you should not trust the average rating on Yelp to determine whether a restaurant is good or bad. At 3½ starts, you may think that you would pass, and you would totally miss out. Don't order the standard things that you can get at any Japanese restaurant or make at home yourself. The point of eating out is to try out things you have never tried nor know how to make.
I ordered Restaurant Nippon's 57th Anniversary Summer Edo-Mae KAISEKI Dinner, and it was great. Even though I have been to Japan more than ten times, I had all these little specialty things I never tried before, because they were made by a executive chef that is a master at their craft. Everything was a new flavor and texture, and it was definite a unique course!
Wonderful spot & sushi was top notch
A delightful lunch al fresco. The sushi was top notch, the service was friendly and pleasant. I will be back often... A real find!
Great Service. Clean. We will come back! Thank you
Terrible overpriced food and less than satisfactory ambiance. Owners dressed sloppy and charge an arm and a leg for tasteless food
Amazing! Authentic Japanese food, experience and great/friendly service!
Everyone enjoyed their meals.
Great outdoor dining setup, with partitions between tables and a relaxing garden vibe. Food was fantastic!
Had a really nice dinner here - outside and with a lot of privacy. Attention to detail is immaculate and service level good. Food is also worth the visit! Will be coming back
The quality of the service and food was fantastic. Under the circumstances it was a top quality effort.
Fantastic food and service
Outdoor dining extremely noisy
Love Nippon. I think Nippon is the most underrated Japanese restaurant in New York.
Food is always good. And in addition to traditional sushi, they serve many Japanese dishes not easily available. Well have never had a bad or disappointing meal there.
Glad they are redecorating. It is needed. But the food here is always great.
Very cramped quarters and rushed service. Is being renovated and hopefully will lead to a better experience.
Very old school Japanese restaurant. I loved the ambiance, but the service and food were only okay. Even though they say they have vegetarian options, the server was offended and astonished when we asked. She sputtered they have a few salads, but wasn’t even sure they had the vegetable roll listed on the menu.
