République, located in mid-city, is owned by Chef Walter Manzke and Chef Margarita Manzke. Centered in the heart of Los Angeles, the classic building in which it resides was originally erected in 1929 by Charlie Chaplin, and later transformed into the iconic La Brea Bakery and Campanile Restaurant. République builds on this storied past, offering a gastronomic environment imbued with history and grandeur. The space features a casual bar and bistro in the front with a more formal dining area located in the rear, serving a French-inspired menu created daily by our Chefs.

With friends in town from Chicago, we wanted to show the latest in LA cuisine and weren't disappointed. The place was packed and yet the reservation was honored pretty close to the set time. A requested table for four where we could converse was granted and thank God for that! To choose "energetic" as the Open Table noise level category is an understatement. This place is loud! Now, for a large party enjoying a Saturday night, this could be a good thing. I would not recommend if it's for proposing to your future life partner, however. We know one of the sommeliers from our favorite wine bar but she was in training after recently being hired so we got one of the senior staff. He knew his stuff. Both white and red bottles recommended were dynamite! Food came in a tasting format with dishes meant for sharing. Everything was stellar! Desert was OK but by that time we had been blown away by everything else so, who cares? One thing that really stood out to me was the service. In such a crowded French Country Inn type of setting where large tables predominated, the staff was attentive to a high degree. We'll be back (just not for a quiet dinner)!

The restaurant currently has a B grading. The ambiance is beautiful, the service was great, however, food is extremely expensive and not worth it.

That this very large, multi-level restaurant is packed on a Monday evening—with couples, families with young children, co-workers and large celebratory groups—is telling, especially when you consider just how expensive a restaurant Republique is. My husband & I came to celebrate our anniversary. We were seated upstairs on the balcony, which was less noisy than other spaces but also has much less ambiance. Most everything on the menu sounds like it would be delicious (and was) plus different from what you’ll find at other finer dining restaurants. We did think $76 for the filet of turbot, which came with whipped potatoes & a gorgeous Chanterelle mushroom sauce, was rather silly. We did enjoy it, however. Ditto for $39 spinach cavatelli with mixed mushrooms. They are cooking at a high level for sure—just feel like the prices should be about 15% less than what they are. Sigh. We’ll be back~

Food was great, service was good. Only complaint was we were seated at a communal table with other guests close on both sides. Not exactly how I wanted to celebrate my wife's birthday.

We had been to Republique a few years earlier, and certainly remember enjoying it, but wow was this great. We ordered everything to share. All delicious. A couple of definite highlights were the butternut squash pasta, the burrata appetizer and the short rib. Service was outstanding as well. We hope to make a reservation for our sons’ graduation in May. Bravo.

We celebrated my birthday at Republique and we all had a wonderful time. The food was every good especially the Spinach pasta dish which was outstanding. The bread and butter is amazing. We were a little disappointed in the chicken, not as outstanding as it use to be. The gem salad was also the best. We would return.

I would recommend but with some reservations. The place is very loud. My food experience there was ok but for the price I was expecting much better. I have not crossed it off my list yet. I may give it one more chance but if it does not meet my expectations I will not return.

The B health rating is disgusting and ruined the experience

Dear Carolyn, The Health Department did grade us below our expectations because of a building maintenance issue that has nothing to do with any of our food or drink related spaces. We are deeply disappointed in this, and have taken immediate measures to fix the issue and expect our grade to be back up to A in a week's time. Fantastic! Started with great staff/sommelier interaction. What a wine list! Bread with drippings was a decadent start. Dodge Cove oysters from Damarascotta, Maine followed (first time I have seen Maine oysters outside of Maine and imho they are the best). We were lucky enough to hit spot prawn season and so could not pass them up. Wow! Beautiful French brown butter basted and served split lengthwise with roe intact. Sweet and perfect little bites. Next up was the highly lauded sous vide pork belly with kaluga caviar served atop the airiest cauliflower purée I have tasted. A real velvety treat..sublime. Bucatini cacio e pepe for an indulgent pasta course and finished with braised short rib just brimming with rich umame goodness. We skipped desert for no good reason other than we were full. Next time I might leave room for a cheese course as those on the board this evening were beautiful. Really lovely dinner.

This restaurant is totally overrated. The food was mediocre as was the service. Not sure if this restaurant was better at some point, but it no longer should be on the top restaurant list. We ordered a ton so we could taste a variety of things and nothing was amazing or memorable. Portions were small and prices are high. Service was decent, but not at the level it should be. We had a reservation and were seated at a communal table with barstools, which my back was not happy about for a lengthy meal. Skip this...there's so much better in LA.

My family of 4 recently dined at Republique to celebrate my and my spouse's anniversary. We began with the bread and Rodolphe le Meunier butter and pan droppings, and it took a great deal of willpower to refrain from demolishing everything before the balance of the food came out. The Garden of ... Little Gems salad was wonderful, perfectly dressed and balanced. The Roasted Cauliflower came next, with wonderful spices punctuated with flavorful pomegranate seeds. The Butternut Squash Agnolotti was creamy and delicately sweet. I would have liked a bit more sage sprinkled in, but that's a personal preference. For some reason, the Dover Sole and Sonoma Duck Breast were delayed, and to make up for the wait, the staff generously brought out a Roasted Chicken with pomme boulengere. I actually don't eat chicken, but my family said it was delicious and perfectly cooked. When it arrived the Dover Sole was nicely cooked, but I wish its flavor was brought out more with the spices and meyer lemon, as the brown butter was a bit overpowering. Again, personal preference. For our anniversary celebration, the staff again generously treated us to dessert. The En Croute was delicious and an impressive presentation, but our favorite dish of the night was the Almond Brown Butter Cake. The fruit, cake and ice cream contrasted and complimented each other -- just a delight to eat. Our table neighbors enjoyed many dishes that we hope to try next time.

We took my sister there for her birthday and had THE BEST experience. Service was great! Friendly and accommodating staff made us feel welcome. The minute we stepped inside there was a wonderful smell of something delicious cooking and we looked forward to being seating and ordering. We enjoyed each dish, but my favorites were the Cavatelli and the short ribs. The ambiance was relaxed and had a fun vibe, with good music playing. My sister, who is an “Old Hollywood” history buff, said the building was once Charlie Chaplin’s restaurant and It was easy to see the old architecture and decor overlap with the new. I can’t wait to go back!

Sadly overpriced for what we got. My husband order the short ribs that were very nice and I ordered the duck. I am a big fan of duck and know how really good duck should taste. Unfortunately I could have been eating anything and not much of it.

Our server was nice and gave tons of information but was not around when we needed her. Very slow. My cocktail came with the first course, not before. We sat in the back dining room since it was supposed to be quiet. Not! Also the food was overpriced. I had 4 Santa Barbara prawns, no garnish, for $24. Another person in our party had a small amount of lobster pasta for $44. I wanted to like this restaurant but won't be back.

All the staff were so nice. Our waiter was fantastic, perfectly personable and knowledgeable - and that really enhanced the whole dining experience. Everyone seemed appreciative of our patronage. It was a very good experience and the food was excellent!
