Absolutely the worst service and experience I ever had at what I thought was a fine dining establishment.
The tap water they serve smelled of disinfectant that could have either been due to poor cleaning practices in the kitchen or problems with the municipal water supply. Rather than tasting the water, as I suggested, they offered either new carafe of water or bottle water. In either case they could have filtered the water. My concern for repeatedly bringing this up was out of concern for the other patrons and the possibility that someone could become ill from drinking the water. After going back and forth a few times with both the waiter and presumably the owner, we left.
My business associate and I were totally disgusted and will never go back. In fact I hope someone from the health department reads these review and investigates.
Later I looked at other reviews and I noticed this was not the first time they were cited for poor water quality and poor service.
This is totally unacceptable.
The owner is a jerk. Staff is not helpful or responsible. My steak was so tough that I couldn't eat it. There is no ambience at all, and they have tables in front of three exit doors! And there is no coffee available as per the owner! If you read yelp reviews your hair will stand straight up. Horror stories! Would never recommend. I will be happy to hear that the place closes!
Food was fantastic but the waitress was miserable. The restaurant was very loud but that didn't bother us.
Three of us had steaks. I had the shrimp scampi with crabmeat. Everything was delicious and cooked appropriately. Service was overall excellent although our side orser of asparagus arrived very late into the meal. The restaurant servrs a complimentary slice of key lime pie as we were celebrating a birthday. We will be back.
All awesome -- the service, appetizers, steaks, sides, desserts. Already looking for another reason to get back to Ray's soon.
They don’t employ a host so you have to wait for a server to have a free minute before you’re seated. Our server was dressed unprofessionally for an Applebee’s, let alone a restaurant of this magnitude. It has no decor, so the entire experience is akin to eating in a hotel ballroom with cheap, stained carpet. No coffee is served after the meal, they literally don’t even carry it. The whole thing was just very confusing and odd. I would not recommend to anyone I know.
Had no ambiance..plain jane..portions very small..steak was tough..mashed potatoes tasted like they were instant...service was horribe..never saw waiter after ordering..he did collect the money..no one thatt worked there gave genuine smiles
Food was delicious. I had the salmon and crab and my husband had the cowboy ribeye. Decor/ambiance could use some help. Having carpet in the dining room seemed weird.
We have been visiting restaurant for years and the food is still great, however the service is deteriorating and some food options still listed are prepared differently which disappointed us. For example the Wedge Salad is now prepared differently and was much better the way it use to be made. If the service does not improve significantly we will not be visiting as regularly as we use to.
I took my dad for a steak as he had never been to Washington before and he really enjoyed the meal
Went to Rays for our anniversary and had a outstanding time. They gave us a complimentary glass of champagne for our special occasion. From the bread to the steaks our meal was fantastic. We also enjoyed the complimentary sides and we ordered Mac and cheese as well. Ended our dinner with cheesecake. Only thing I wish was that Ray’s serve cocktails and not just beer and wine!
Great service, great ambiance, and the best steaks I've had.
Manager with a bad attitude
Ruined my son’s birthday dinner! We have always enjoyed our meals here in the past, so Monday night was a nasty surprise. My son ordered a steak with marrow bones and bordelaise sauce, but what came was just the steak. When we alerted the waitress, she took it out to the kitchen but then brought it back. She told him to start on the steak and they’d bring the rest. We waited and waited and then flagged her down again. Still nothing and by then my husband and I were almost finished with our steak. My son’s was cold by then. I went to the manager and politely explained the situation. He took offense when I told him that it was unacceptable to have to wait so long for what should have come out right immediately. He thought I was saying that making a mistake was unacceptable, but that wasn’t the case. He started arguing with me and claiming that mistakes happen. Duh! He went in the kitchen and brought back short ribs with a bone and then a few minutes later the marrow bones were delivered. By that time, my son had lost his appetite so we asked for a box and the check. The manager didn’t charge us for his entree, which was decent, but proceeded to lecture us about mistakes and “unacceptability”. Very bad attitude and when I asked for his name, he refused to give it to me. Never going back.
Went for our first anniversary and loved it. Great steak at a great price!
The server was a little unwhelming!
Went for a birthday dinner on a Saturday. Some things were good, while others were bad. The good - surf and turf was fantastic, endless potatoes were ok but endless spinach was awesome, the spiced cashews and bread were nice while waiting for the meal, and our waitress was very nice and efficient. The bad - they were out of ribeye, entrecote, and another steak so we had to order "The Cowboy", which is of course more expensive and was frustrating since we were at a steakhouse that had none of the steaks we wanted. We were not aware until we attempted to order them. The Cowboy had no taste at all, despite having a nice sear on it, the water was room temperature and tasted like tap water and we had to ask for the other side we ordered because it did not come with the rest of the food. I expected an upscale ambiance but it is not quite achieved based on the open floorplan and lack of space between tables. Overall, our experience can be summed up with "it was ok". If you go, definitely get the surf & turf!
Great steaks and great service. A little loud but they were very busy.
Anytime I want a terrific steak dish, Ray's The Steaks never disappoints. It's a low key steak house that makes for a very pleasant experience. Wine list is excellent and the service is always attentive and spot-on. The filets are delicious and the sides of mashed garlic potatoes and creamed spinach are perfect compliments to the steaks. Highly recommend the side of sautéed mushrooms - they are way yummy. There are choices for non-beef eaters. The homemade key lime pie and chocolate mousse are fantastic.
Went to Rays for dinner. Had a 5pm reservation and was sat immediately. The owner sat us and was very friendly. Our waitress came right away and was very pleasant. I ordered the ny strip my boy friend the t-bone. Most came out delicious. This place is a real gem. The only down fall I would say is that you can’t order your steak medium well, or well done. For the ny strip it was fine, however my boyfriends T-bone steak was basically raw around the bone, and he couldn’t eat it. Otherwise, this place was great.
Mediocre food and sub par service.
Wine list looked like it had been pulled from the waste basket.
Waiter was apparently wanting to turn the table as he stopped by and interrupted our conversation. I was expected to stuff olives myself.
We went with my sister-in-law, who has an allergy to onions and garlic. The chef accommodated her by making a sauce without these ingredients. We appreciate the care taken to ensure all customers have a wonderful meal.
Ordered five steaks at table. Three were under cooked. Garlic mashed was just minced garlic spooned on top. Service was very good and they were able to accommodate our large party.
Overrated. Maybe our expectations were too high. Service was stiff. Steaks had no real flavor.
The food was delicious but the service was not great for a holiday dinner. Overall very satisfied
This was such an expensive disappointment! We went for dinner on Easter Sunday and had a reservation. Almost as soon as we sat down, I could tell the service was not going to be good. Our waitress was not friendly or helpful and yet had plenty of time to chat with another table. We all ordered steaks and two were decent, but my 12 oz. New York Strip was AWFUL! It was 50% fat and tough to eat. I would have sent it back but the waitress never stopped by once until we were finished with our meal. When I told her my steak was not acceptable, she said "would you like dessert?" NO - I wanted a good steak and expected that at a rather pricey restaurant. My daughter said something to the manager on the way out since he never came by, and his response was, "Oh! Did you get dessert?" Not the point! Save your money! There are so many better restaurants in the area. I wish I had taken a picture of my plate full of fat. YUCK!
Food was fine, but by no means amazing. For the price you’d expect it to be better. Marrow was almost all bone—I’ve ordered marrow at other places and gotten much better bones. Sides were decent, but way overpriced for the size. Mac n Cheese should not cost $12. There’s also no cocktail selection, just beer and wine. The steaks are fine, but nothing exceptional, and overall I wasn’t impressed, given the supposed reputation.
We have been going to Ray’s regularly for 15 years. It is always a wonderful experience- great service, amazing steaks, wonderful food, and one of our favorite restaurants of all time. We’ve brought family and friends and everyone has always loved it.
This is a great place for a special occasion. Their steaks are top notch. I also love that they give you another helping of mashed potatoes and spinach to take home with your leftover steak. We had a really good bottle of wine too. Their crab bisque is really good. Nothing not to like. We did not need to park in the garage. We were able to park on the street.
My boyfriend and I went to Ray's the Steaks for our anniversary. I was intrigued based on reviews and the difficulty I experienced when trying to find the menu online. When booking our reservation on Open Table, it asked if there was an occasion, so I selected "Anniversary". We arrived and were seated and promptly received complimentary glasses of bubbly and anniversary well wishes. The service was warm and friendly and the food was phenomenal. We both tried the crab bisque - some of the best we've ever had. The steaks were delicious, and cooked perfectly and the mashed potatoes and creamed spinach accompaniments were quite tasty. The chocolate mousse and key lime pie desserts were absolutely divine. We will definitely be going back soon!
Food was very good. Ambiance was lacking from what it used to be here. Service was not good. Simple conversations did not result in simple service (i.e. ask for another beer, server brings you another beer).
I love Rays the Stakes. I ordered filet mignon with bernaise sauce and my friend ordered a t-bone. They were both cooked to perfection. The garlic mashed potatoes rocked.
Very surprised by the quality for the cost. Amazing steaks. Will return
Great steak selection with plenty of options for every taste!!
Rays is one of the top 2 steakhouses I have eaten at. I recommend everyone that comes to visit DC go there.
Ray's the Steaks used to be one of my go to steak restaurant destinations. The past two visits has witnessed a marked deterioration in my experience. In both instances, the rib eye steak quality had declined. On my most recent visit, I had ordered a medium rare and the steak came back rare. Ray's is no longer a destination place for me. It will be a long while, if ever, before I consider returning.
Outstanding! First time, but we look forward to returning. Reasonable prices for excellent steaks. The decor isn’t as glamorous as other steakhouses, but with the money we save, we can eat here more often.
Food was delicious. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Service was pleasant and efficient.
Great experience. We started with Caesar and the bacon slab wedge. Highly recommend the bacon slab wedge salad. The steaks were delicious and cooked to perfection. Everything on the menu from the steaks to the wines were all priced at a great value. The place is unassuming and simple unlike a stuffy pretencious steakhouse. This will be my new favorite spot for juicy steaks.
The Service was fine, waitress was very polite. However, the food itself was an issue. My date and I both ordered our steaks medium- well and they came out looking like raw meat. We had to send them back and they were still far too pink for medium- well when they came back. Also, the couple next to us were complaining their steaks were under-cooked. I've had better steak at Outback and Longhorn that were cooked perfectly the first time, why spend twice as much here
The location was convenient but the food was amazing and it was only made better by the wonderful waitress and staff. Everyone should do steak this good.
