What Insiders Are Saying
High quality meats that won’t break the bank.
16 years running, THE BEST steak for the money, no one else is even CLOSE. Ask anyone who loves steak and they all know this is THE place. Always has been and may it always be!
We knew it was bare bones. We had been there many times. We were seated in a dark corner with minimum ventilation. The food was ok but not as good as before. We like our steaks but ordered medium rare. Even too rare for us. The vegetables were lukewarm but the steak flies were delicious. A big disappointed
Food was cooked perfectly. Prices very good and the quality of the food excellent. Nice steakhouse for Arlington area.
Owner greeted us at the door, suggested which dinner he would reccomend. Wonderful.
Typically a good experience. Wagu steak was poor and the service substandard. Not my typical experience at Rays.
Steaks were good and they were very accommodating about allowing us to share a meal with as much sides as we wanted. Not quite worth the one hour drive from Manassas.
Seemed to be a place mostly for men's business meals.
Best steak ever!
Great value. Yummy steaks! Ambiance meh...but still a good deal.
Steaks remain top drawer some of the best!😄🥩
Need to reconsider no coffee / espresso
Finally had a chance to check this place out. We had an early reservation Saturday and had a great dinner. Food was great although my GF wanted her steak medium and it definitely looked a little bit more on the rare side compared to mine. Overall, great experience though.
The best steak money can buy, if you like tendons, bitter garlic, and lukewarm food.
However, our server was lovely.
The problem is spending $200 for four people to eat a substandard meal.
My favorite steakhouse. The best steaks at relatively reasonable prices. Service was quick and friendly, and we received personal attention from the owner at the host stand. If you’re looking for a great steak in Arlington, look no further. Oh and they have my favorite soda from back home in KY- Ale81!
Best steak I have ever had. I constantly come back.
Ray's the Steaks UNDERrates itself ~ at least in our experience! Both my Surf and Turf and my husband's Hangar Steak were wonderful, as were the sides of creamed spinach and mashed potatoes. We were celebrating my husband's birthday and received a bowl of exceptional she-crab soup courtesy of Heather, our very accommodating serving-person, and a dynamite slice of key lime pie, courtesy of the manager! What a special night! Thank you!
Ambiance wise, there is nothing special about Ray's the Steaks. The steaks are wonderful. The sides are delicious but dont expect anything more in the special dept.
They do not have a bar. You can order simple drinks that they can pour.
When I asked for a Cosmo, the waiter made fun of me and said I cleary did not do my research on Ray's.
This was our second time. The first time were were seating in a back room, next to a humming refrigerator, a storage nook and a big table with 2 kids under the age of 2. For 3 of us, the bill was $200.
As we were being seated by the owner, I mentioned the bad experience with seating on visit #1. We had a reservation this time. The place was not full. We passed through a not crowded dining room to an annex room. We saw a nice table by the window and we asked for it and he said no it was for 4 and we were 2. He sat us in the back of an annex room. No decor, no music, cheap everything.
We were provided water. We waited 15-20 min for the waiter and when we joked that we thought were were forgotten, he told us we should be glad that we had water.
Later, we looked over and the nice table by the window had 3 people seated, not 4.
I made the reservation online and noted my husband's birthday. I told the waiter in person. We ordered dessert and no candle or special greeting --nothing ....when we joked about it - the waiter said - you should have told me!
The evening did get better, and as the crowd thinned, we did get more attention. We had a lovely interaction with the table next to us, who also was in the ignore section. They ordered wedge salads that never came and waited a long time for their food. It was also his birthday. After we gave the waiter some friendly grief, he did give us some special attention.
Great steaks and good prices. Service is good. Very busy place so good idea to make a reservation. Petit filet was delicious, as well as the sides that come with meal.
Always love this place, but the evening we went they seemed short handed and the guy at the front was unusually chatty. Friendly and nice but seemed a bit oblivious to others waiting to be seated and to yet others being polite and patient with his chattiness. But the food was great, as always. No gimmicks.
Consistently great steaks, very good sides, a little “screw you” attitude adds to the mystique and isn’t a serious threat to enjoyment. (“No, you can’t order the lobster Mac and cheese as an appetizer because it takes 16 minutes to prepare and throws the meal timing off.”) They are serious about turning over the tables, which in fairness helps them keep the prices so reasonable for really top drawer steaks. I love it.
Always a great steak! Pleasant staff and good company!
The food was spot on, the servers were friendly, and the price was honestly quite appropriate for the quality. We really enjoyed it. Are you going to sit there for three hours and have a white-glove meal? No. If that's what you want, go elsewhere. Ray's is fine dining, but laid back and for everybody.
Always consistently high quality food. I had the petite filet with crab meat and a house salad. Prepared as requested and the sides of potatoes and cream spinach are also very good. The Malbec wasn’t great but I’ve had other wines here and they are fine. Still one of my favorite area steak houses - no nonsense excellent meal. Enjoy!
Unfortunately our experience at Rays was awful. We have gone to Rays for the last 5-7 years and it was always delicious with great service. We are leaving the area and Rays was on our list of places to eat before we head out. The service was horrible. The host slapped the menus on the table and walked away. The waiter brought the bread and when we asked for bread plates, she said, “well, I can get some.” When the meal arrived, the sides were lukewarm. When we requested more sides from another waiter since ours was MIA, he never brought them so then I asked the host since our waiter was still MIA. When they arrived, at least they were hot. The food was above average but for that price point and our prior experience we were disappointed in the food and the service and wonder what has happened to this Arlington institution.
restaurant has changed, and not for the better. The food is a 4.5, the service is a 1.0. Upon arrival, I stood directly in front of the host as he carried on a conversation with other patrons and refused to acknowledge me, long enough for me to consider turning right around and leaving. If you're in the middle of something, you can let me know you'll be with me in a minute, instead of avoiding eye contact and acting like I'm an inconvenience. I don't need you to drop everything to seat my party, but the rudeness was inexcusable. The servers all look like they'd rather be somewhere else, which certainly didn't make me want to be there. No complaints about the food at all, but the service colored the experience negatively.
My favorite restaurant! Steaks are always amazing, service is wonderful, prices are reasonable.
Ray's has been an Arlington staple for many years, and I continue to be impressed. I have seen some complain about the lack of ambiance, but I go to Ray's for a good meal at a good price, not to look at the decor. If you want decor, go elsewhere. If you want a great steak at a reasonable (for a steakhouse) price, go to Ray's. It is an unassuming place, which is why I like it.
food was excellent. nice to complimentary sides. atmosphere was noisy. I felt like the biggest concern was turning over the table. waitress was not personable.
Steaks were pretty good. I had the Wagyu rare, and thought it was the best of our group's entrées. Sides were nothing to write home about, and mac & cheese was rather lame. Key lime pie was tasty but perhaps not that fresh. The chocolate mousse was pretty bad. It should be light, after all it has beaten eggwhites folded into it. (Mousse translated means foam.) The consistency was that of cold peanut butter, and it seemed like it had been sitting in the fridge for 3 days. We shared one, and none of us could eat it. I had a glass of, I think it was Malbec. Very mediocre table wine. I should have known from the price. It would have been nice to have a good red to complement the meat. All in all, the meat was pretty good but I wouldn't bother with sides or dessert.
MOST PLEASANT FOR AN EARLY SATURDAY EVENING IN AUGUST WITH MANY AWAY ON VACATION?
OTHERWISE , MUCH AS I LIKE RAY'S, IT CAN BE MUCH TOO LOUD WHEN IN FULL OPERATION.
Steaks were good, but less than stellar and not quite worth the price when compared to similarly priced steaks at other restaurants. I last ate at Rays about 8 years and believe the selection, uniqueness of their steak preparation, and style the restaurant had has been lost. The atmosphere has also declined. The staff, starting with the casual host with no personality to the bored, minimalist waiter, didn’t appear interested in making people feel welcomed and interested in their business. Rays used to be a happening place. Not so much anymore.
Substance over style: This venue will appeal to folks who enjoy a credible steak dinner without the overhead of fine dining ambience. The only oddity is that, while they serve a small selection of desserts (the chocolate mousse was rich), they refuse to serve any hot beverages, to include after-dinner espresso. How hard could that be? Nevertheless, I will be back. S.
Delicious steak. Delicious wine and knowledgeable service. Un pretentious, really good food.
Great steaks at casual atmosphere with corresponding prices.
We met out of town friends there. Previously my wife and I ate at the old Virginia location as well as the Silver Spring store. Your steaks are terrific. Consistently fresh, perfectly prepared, and mouth watering. It's hard to get a better steak anywhere else. The 4 of us enjoyed your Chateau Briand, the Filet, and the Hanger steak. All were superb. We highly recommend it!
Wonderful steaks!!! Great service too! Our server was very nice and accommodating. The steak was delicious!
Ray’s has the best steaks in the area. I’d take Ray’s over any of the high end steak houses for business meetings.
We love to celebrate family occasions with our adult kids and our granddaughter (almost 2 - high chair available). We love the steaks but our pescatarian daughter can find something too. For a reasonable corkage fee we can bring a bottle or two of our own wine to sip,
Ray's the Steaks is so good - just delicious steaks at super affordable prices. My personal favorite is the filet, medium rare, which comes out perfectly pink. Au poivre is my go-to style, but they have a variety of delicious sauces and combinations. (Also they have a really good winelist for being such a small place, and will let you cork and take your bottle with you if you don't finish it.)
We go here for birthdays often, and would definitely recommend to friends.
There is little to no decor. I know that keeps prices very competitive but some decor would likely be well received and do a great deal to boost people having a celebration there.
Our server, Derek, was fantastic!
The steaks & sides were delicious and a great value.
My favorite restaurant in Arlington.
