Ray's The Steaks Ratings and Reviews
The steak was cooked perfectly but I wouldn't expect anything less at a "steak house". The service was okay. I think our server may have been "in the weeds" as our service was less than stellar. Main issues were:
1. I received a glass of wine with lipstick on the rim, which is easily avoidable.
2. We ordered an additional side with dinner which didn't arrive with the entree. I requested it twice before it arrived approximately half way through the meal.
3. Our water glasses sat empty for an extended period of time. I watched the server and food runners look at our empty water glasses while they walked by us several times with full pitchers of water.
I'm not one to complain - service is what it was. Maybe the server was in the weeds, things happen. In short, while I recognize it is a "casual" steak house I still expect above average service at a place like Rays the Steaks, especially for the price.
Rays the Steaks was a 5-star favourite for us. However, this time was a bit disappointing, probably because of a downsizing in the restaurant and the options on offer. Our server was wonderful--knowledgeable about the cuts of beef, and helpful with good recommendations (and she made a delicious Manhattan). The steaks were still delicious, and the crab bisque was excellent. But, the desserts (the chocolate mousse and key lime pie) tasted as though they had been mass produced and stored in the fridge for a good while. The ambiance was a little flat, again, probably because the restaurant is undergoing some restyling. A little background music would have been nice. Still good, but not as great as previous times.
I came with the expectation of a stripped down menu and sparse decor, but I didn’t plan on harried and disorganized waitstaff. Fill my water a couple times and take my order promptly, I’ll be happy. Don’t make me wait 15 mins to place my order and never return to offer dessert or the check. Also, when I ask if there are specials (because I distantly heard another server telling his table), don’t blurt out “No” then come back 10 mins later to tell me. I also found that sitting in the back corner facing a blank wall to be a bit claustrophobic.
Unfortunately, the husband’s grilled ribeye was thin and tough, and my dish with the bone marrow on the side (I believe it was a top loin) was good but the marrow bones were plopped in the pan sauce, making half of the sauce inaccessible. The lobster mac, scallop app, and crab bisque were all very good. Spinach was as expected, mashed potatoes had an odd flavor, texture reminded me of instant.
We drove about 45 mins to get there, I can’t say I would bother to go again unless I was already in the area.
We had a lovely meal! The food was fantastic, but the service could have been better. Our waitress was great - but just too busy. She was constantly shuffling between multiple tables. Our glasses weren’t always filled and we had to flag folks down a few times. Also, the host didn’t make note of the special celebration noted in the reservation.
I’ll keep it short: Wife had a great steak, mine was pretty grisly. If I wasn’t paying $44 for the ribeye I probably wouldn’t be writing this but it was and I am. It wasn’t a big deal but still disappointing. When I mentioned it to the waiter, he shrugged his shoulders and said something along the lines of, “ yea that’s how ribeyes are” and walked off. He wasn’t rude, just dismissive. We like Rays and will probably be back but not for a while.
We had a great time! We were seated immeadiatly. The food was amazing and the price reasonable. Our waitress was incredibly polite and assisted us in picking a wine we’d like. My buddy loved the food and the ambiance was lovely for a Friday night. The location was right across from a classy bar. Overall great visit.
We love this place! Steaks are amazing, ambiance is cute, cozy and quiet enough to have a meaningful conversation. This is my boyfriend's favorite place for an amazing steak that won't break the bank, but is fancy enough for a special date night or birthday dinner.
Divine! Excellent steaks at an affordable price. Ray the Steaks delivers a memorable experience when it comes to steak, not only they cook your steak to perfection, but you cannot beat the complimentary sides. The spinach and mashed potatoes are delicious. Took my family visiting from out of town and were blown away by a delicious New Year's Day dinner. Best way to start 2018!
The steaks were terrific: tender and delicious, cooked exactly to the right doneness. The au poivre sauce on the petit filet was superb. The meal comes with a complimentary side order of mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. I was especially pleased that the bill at end of meal -- with steaks, wine and dessert -- was altogether reasonable for two people. Oh, and the service was courteous and not intrusive. In other words, they keep an eye on your table but know not to come back every five seconds to ask if everything's okay!
Ray’s is now an institution, renowned for its devotion to beef, well-selected, well-cut, well and simply prepared, and really tasty beef. Our server recommended the special, the Tomahawk cut, which was spectacular. It’s not the most elegant experience out there, but it’s one of my favorite kitchens in the area. They do steakhouse without pretense, with really great ingredients, and at reasonable cost for the quality. I love this place.
I really enjoy Ray's the Steaks because I like having the ability to order a great steak and a nice bottle of wine in an environment more casual than most other steakhouses. This time I had the petit filet with crab, and it was wonderful. I think this restaurant is very reasonably priced for its portions, and the last two times I have been here have both been really enjoyable dining experiences. I look forward to my next visit.
It was an okay experience. The crab bisque was great. However, my steak was surprisingly tough for what should have been a good cut of meat and didn't have as much flavor as I had expected. It wasn't terrible but just not what I expected based on the reputation of the establishment. My server was nice and the price point was fine. I will chalk it up to an off night in the kitchen and try again at some point.
The steaks were good, but that was about it. The host was curt, walking around in a flannel and tennis shoes. The ambience was lacking, just a basic restaurant. The mashed potatoes tasted like they came from a box, which was utterly disappointing when paired with a good steak. Our server was good, though. Come for the steaks and service, just don't expect anything more.
We have been dining at Ray’s since it first opened in an old strip shopping center, and it was a great neighborhood casual restaurant then. They moved to a more upscale location, upscale interior but the same GREAT steaks. You have to make a reservation now and dress up a bit more than jeans and T-shirt, but it’s still the best beef in the Washington area.
Took my wife for her birthday and she loved it. The food and service was outstanding. She had the New York Strip and I had the Filet. She and I both agree, the best steaks we have ever had. The waiter tended to our every need. This was our first time here and we will be back.
We have been to Ray's many times--it is our go-to steak place and also our Valentine's date every year. I wanted to take the time to recognize the tremendous service we received this time around in accommodating us and our infant son. I had read some reviews about the restaurant not being very welcoming to children in the past, but that was certainly not our experience. (It probably helped that our reservation was on the early side.) The owner greeted us and seated us and was more than pleasant in welcoming us and setting us up at a table that accommodated all of the adult guests, a high chair in a low traffic position, AND our stroller. The food, as always, was excellent! Kudos to Ray's and we'll definitely be back.
