Ray's The Steaks Ratings and Reviews
The food was great and very well priced. The host at the front stand was extremely uncomfortable and rude. He snapped a multiple customers and had a condescending smile on his face the whole time he was shooting out demands. He also proceeded to chase us out of the restaurant when we were leaving because we stopped to talk to another set of guests that had our uncomfortable entrance experience. He asked what we had been talking about and asked if we were talking crap basically - very strange behavior. Our hostess got seated 9 tables at the same time - so I understand why he was so slow and uninterested in service. Seems like it could be run much better, but you can't beat the steak for that price.
No bar, terrible decor and layout. The atmosphere is uninviting and dated. It feels like a pop up restaurant made out of a banquet room. The maitre d wore skater clothes and I wasn’t quite sure he worked there when he greeted us. Service was ok and food good but this restaurant needs a lot of work to be respectable.
Steaks were good but not great. Was told by the server that medium was red in the middle and medium rare was very pink. We usually like them very pink so ordered them medium well on his recommendation and they came out just a little pink. We asked for bread plates for the bread they brought out and were told they don't usually do that but we saw another waiter bring out plates with the bread. Expected more based on other reviews.
Great menu options. Party of 5, 2 steaks had to get sent back due to being undercooked, but they took care of it right away. Sides came out about 15 min after meals, but we were there at a busy time. Waiters tried to help each other, but lacked in communication. Still it didn't take away from the meals.
Delicious steak from a neighborhood gem! We have been going to Ray's for years and feel lucky that it's in the neighborhood. Not cheap but good value. Every once in a while I wish for a baked potato, but the mashed potatoes are delicious. If you don't eat steak, try the scallops. And the crab bisque . . .
We had a fantastic meal! The cowboy cut ribeye for two was amazing! The hanger steak was wonderful. Both done perfectly medium rare. The service was fantastic. Chris took especially great care of us. The maître d stopped by and checked in with us in the dining room and took extra time when we were leaving to make sure all was well and thanked us for coming. We couldn't have asked for a better evening.
They couldn't find my reservation and asked me several times if it could be under another name and then after I said no, asked again what other names I might have put it under? Was then told we had accidentally already been checked in and not to worry, they had a table and the best part, "don't worry, I believe you". I thought that was incredibly sporting of then given I had the confirmation. I was slightly embarrassed given the line of people behind us and after that comment, slightly annoyed. It wasn't clear they did have a table but they found one and we were promptly seated at the worst table in the restaurant. Steaks were great so that's a plus but overall experience left a lot to be desired. We hurried through dinner and left.
Food excellent and staff very friendly but service a bit slow - it was busy when we visited for a business dinner but still quiet enough for easy conversation. Overall though, would recommend based on range and quality of food choices and pretty good value for money.
The servers were friendly and tried hard, the steaks were good - but it all goes downhill from there. While the prices were up there with Capital Grill and Morton's, the dining room was very spartan and unimpressive, there is no bar to sit at. The menu has a good range of steaks but beyond that it was very limited. The appetizers were mostly just salads - and the salads were unimpressive. Unlike it's competitors, alternatives to steaks was minimal. Also the sides were limited - the "free" mashed potatoes and creamed spinach tasted bland and store-bought and the other sides were good but nothing special. Overall, it was an o.k. meal but all four of us left saying "shoulda gone to......[name your favorite chain steak house] for these prices.
note: During our visit, the building's A/C wasn't working which also took away from the experience due to the noise and heat. I assume this is temporary.
My wife and I have heard a lot about the place, and finally went. Ray's the Steaks lived up to the hype. Excellent steak cooked to perfection. Wine was great, server was very friendly and knew what he was talking about with regards to dinner and wine. Meal came with complimentary bread, as well as two house sides of mashed potatoes and creamed spinach, both of which were delicious. We wound up splitting the porterhouse (house special) which was more than enough food for the both of us. Food was priced very well - we usually wind up spending a lot more at a fine steakhouse for what we got. Ambiance was quiet, but not stuffy. I am not the type who generally goes to the same restaurants more than twice, but I would definitely put Ray's the Steaks in a category of restaurant I would recommend to a friend and have future dinner/events there!
Due to a power outage, the air conditioning unit was not working properly. However, with the windows open, fans, ice water, and a 10% discount off the check made it bearable. The food was excellent and service was great. If you want a great steak meal, this is your place. At minimum, there are parking garages available close by or street parking if you're luck is good.
Even though the power had been out overnight and had only recently come back on. Staff was able to place fans throughout, which made the restaurant quiet comfortable, they even gave every table 10% due the lack of air conditioning, which was quiet a delightful surprise. The food was fabulous as well. A wonderful evening for all. So glad they began taking reservations.
Wanted something local to Pentagon City.
Picked Rays based on reviews.
Although we didn't have appetizers the waiter talked me into the aged 20 ounce bone in rib eye.
I was not disappointed. It was one of the best tasting steaks I have had in a while and perfectly cooked.
My dining partner had the filet and was also pleased.
Didn't like the fact I couldn't pick my sides and we ordered the mushrooms a la carte and they complemented the beef well.
Reasonably priced wine list.
Only disappointment was an extremely noisy party that I had to walk over and tell them they were disrupting the restaurant....not my responsibility but the staff didn't own it. The other diners thank me.
Overall great food and high priced.
You do not go to Ray The Steaks for the Decor you go there to get a great meal for a great Value. My wife had the Caesar Salad and jumbo scallops and they were perfection i had the dual Filet Mignon with lump crab and it melted in my mouth. The waiter was on point until he forgot the papermill for the salad and also forgot the reorder of mash potatoes(with your meal you get endless helpings of creamed spinach and mashed potatoes). They have a limited bar menu but it is adequate. This is a go to steak house the food is always really good at a great value
Good meal again at Ray's. Lack of fancy interior more than offset by hearty food, and great steaks. One suggestion: they should have more choices for the sides (family style mashed potatoes and cream spinach come with the entree) that can be substituted. But great value and would easily choose Ray's over higher priced option if you are interested in the food more than atmosphere or a name brand steakhouse.
