This restuarant no longer exists. We arrived expecting a table only to be told that the place had closed down, despite having received an email from open table to confirm the booking the day before. There was still food to buy, but service was basic.
On arrival we were informed the restaurant was closed due to the demands of the current production. They said they tried to call us with this information - no they didn't. Had to go with limited choice from the café because we couldn't be bothered to queue at the Ask Restaurant. No charge was made for the replacement meal but it wasn't what we were prepared for and all very disappointing
Thought the menu was very limited, though what we had was good. No vegetables served up as part of the meal and had to be ordered separately.
We were in a draughty spot and quite cold even though it was June
Service was fine, but we wouldn't go again as there are so many other places to choose in York.
We had a very pleasant pre- theatre meal. Table in the window, good service and a tasty main course with herbs and roasted vegetables. I'd happily do this again.
Went for a pre theatre dinner . Restaurant had a good atmosphere and staff were friendly. Food was lovely and very reasonably priced. My husband andI had a two course set menu which had a good choice of Starters and main course. Salmon fish cakes for starters were nice and my husbands pate was also good. Both main courses were really nice the risotto was excellent and my husband had a chicken dish which he equally enjoyed.
Would definitely return.
Helpful staff and quick service. We liked the menu choices - the Vegetarian Bread and Butter pudding was very tasty. Our first visit since the refurbishment. Will definitely be back for a pre-Theatre meal on our next visit to a Show.
Good pre theatre supper is in theatre so very convent for the performance very nice food and helpful staff
Wonderful meal ,great value for money spent and very helpful staff
A very good meal was served to us by really friendly and efficient staff. 4 of us all enjoyed our meals. The 2 men had black pudding on a mash base covered with a fried egg as a starter which was absolutely excellent. 3 had belly pork for main course, and one chicken which were very good. The 2 ladies had cheese, which we gentlemen also sampled. This was complemented by a good bottle of merlot and the whole experience was extremely pleasant as a pre show dinner. Incidentally, "All or Nothing" was brilliant.
Fixed price dinner menu good value and excellent quality, service was prompt despite only one front of house staff member serving all restaurant covers, but very attentive and efficient.
Eating area was chilly due to unfortunate awful weather in June.
Staff very helpful, good table. Disappointed with the menu, not a great deal of variety but what we had was nice.
Very courteous and prompt service. The fixed menu was limited but would cater for all tastes. This sis the second time we have used this restaurant for a pre-show meal and we shall be delighted to use it again
Booked table for 2 pre theatre show. Table, service, food exactly as promised. Thinking of becoming member and getting 10% reduction next time. Thanks to all.
Great venue for pre theatre dining. Good food and service.
Sadly our experience of the food at the theatre was really poor. The food we were given was really delayed and the actual menu did not match the food that was delivered with the wrong sauce etc. From my last dining experience here there was a significant deterioration and I wouldn't recommend it.
Had a pre-theatre meal. The food was really good and the servers worked hard to try and cover all the tables. We felt that another server was needed to ensure all diners received more attention. We arrived some twenty minutes early for our appointed reservation and were thankfully seated. This have us one hour and forty minutes before the show start time and we needed this - but still had to miss the coffees in order to get to our seats in the theatre for curtain up.
Great service (our waitress was awesome), lovely food, and a great start to the evening
Menu and presentation of the food was of a high standard and very tasty, the only thing that spoilt the occasion for me point was waitress's could be dressed much smarter to complement the food serviced ie;- matching socks, no ladders in tights and hair brushed, on the plus side their were pleasent, friendly and efficient.
Another very good meal, before a show, at the Theatre Royal. The meal was delicious, very relaxed and the service prompt and friendly. Timing to meet the start of the show was very good.
I don't know why I was surprised - but I was. The food was excellent. The staff in the restaurant, very good. A great evening before the theater.
Visite the restraunt pre-show. Booking system worked well and staff were expecting us. Friendly welcome by the staff with great service. I would be happy to dine here again.
We booked for a pre-performance meal as we were travelling from Wakefield for the ballet. The meal was an add on to the evening initially but became a star 🌟 in its own right. I mentioned in my online booking that I was diabetic, I don't really expect much fuss and can usually pick my way around a menu, I just like people to know that there is a medical reason why I don't want additional salt in my savouries or cream and sugar laden desserts. But in Saturday morning I was pleasantly taken aback when our waitress for the evening rang to check my diet against the menu. What an inclusive service!! And when we arrived royalty couldn't have more attentive service. The main course was delicious - I had the risotto - crayfish with season green vegetables no added butter - so a natural wonderful taste combination. I can recommend to non diabetics - too often food arrives on the table and without even bothering to taste it salt, pepper and sauce is immediately added in quantity, what an insult to the chef and kitchen staff who have prepared the dish to perfection!! But then came dessert, my companion had the mulled wine apple crumble, which I did quite fancy .... But the chef and kitchen staff had prepared for me a special fruit dish - a Swan of fruit - sliced apple to form the head and neck and two bunches of grapes formed the wings. Fabulous.
For the second time we were kept waiting over half and hour for our first course, our main was fairly promptly delivered but we did not have time for dessert, and only managed to drink a mouthful of coffee before we needed to take our seats in the auditorium.
As we have had excellent service in the past we were sure last time was a one of but no, it happened again, I am not sure we will try again, as the poor service spoils the whole evening
Lovely place and atmostphere. Came for pre theater meal. Really enjoy'd it . Was'nt rushed , nice relaxing evening before show.
It was a fairly priced, good quality pre-theatre meal. Some staff seemed to need more training!
Excellent food - very good service - ideal for a pre theatre meal.
Food was good in the bistros good value limited choice but very tasty and well presented
VERY ENJOYABLE MEAL AND VERY GOOD SERVICE,SET US UP QUITE NICELY FOR A VERY ENTERTAINING PLAY.
Tasty food and friendly servers. However, service was not particularly prompt (had to wait about 40 mins between starter and main course) and the menu hasn't changed for some time. I'd come again but it would be good to have something different to choose.
A pre-theatre meal - the food was pretty good - service & ambience were excellent- overall good value and certainly contributed to our night's enjoyment .
Dissappointing visit, one chef down and short of staff serving us, meant that even though we left 1 hour and 45 minutes to eat, we didn't have time before the show for dessert, and were told to get our own coffee. Not up to previous standards
This was a pre -theatre meal on our wedding anniversary. The food was great. Service efficient and friendly. And great value for money - prosecco only £19.95!
My wife & I were going to the Theatre & saw that there was an in house restaurant which we decided to try. They have a small set menu but there is decent variety considering there are only 4 or 5 choices, the service was very good and we shared a very nice bottle of Malbec.
The food wasn't out of this world but there was nothing wrong with it, portion sizes were good, we had 2 courses each and were perfectly satisfied. It's ideal if the weather is poor & you want meal before the show & not to arrive soaking wet!
Very accommodating chef as there was no crab left on the hors d'oeuvre menu I was offered prawn as an alternative, and very nice it was too. Convenient for us as we had seats for York theatre, on site at 7.30pm
Excellent choice for pre show. Good service. Excellent food. Good value. Well worth booking next time you're going to a show.
Very friendly staff, attentive and quick to take order. Food arrived quickly and was delicious. Great for pre-theatre meal or just a meal out. Great for people watching.
We ate there before a performance at the theatre. The food was fine, but we felt it was over-priced. However, the service was so slow that, in spite of the fact that we allowed 80 minutes for a two course meal, we had to leave our dessert course unfinished as the performance was about to start. We will not eat there before seeing a play again as it was very stressful wondering if our food would arrive in time. Which it didn't!
We arrived earlier than our reserved time and that was no problem as we were seated straight away. The choice of food for meat eaters was extensive,as a vegetarian I felt a little disappointed as there was only one vegetarian choice for the starter - veggie pate- and one choice for the main a bread and butter pudding with roasted vegetables. That said the food was delicious, very tasty and cooked to perfection. The other members of the group chose a pork dish which they all agreed was perfect. The area given over to the dining area was filled with many parties who appeared to be enjoying themselves. We had made arrangements to eat here as we were going to see the Panto and found it a perfect pre theatre venue. Service was friendly and of a high standard. Would recommend this to others.
We were there for a meal before the (excellent!) Panto; the meal was very tasty indeed (crayfish risotto for me, and vegetable bread and butter pudding for my wife). The apple crumble, served with a separate small jug of custard was delicious. Combined with first-rate, attentive service, this was a most enjoyable meal at a very reasonable price.
Thanks to all the staff!
Really enjoyed our meal. I had chicken in leek sauce and sticky toffee pudding with ice cream, recommend both! Daughter also had same as me and hubby had the belly pork and apple crumble. We all agreed well worth the money. Staff were all lovely and very efficient. Will come again.
