When in Rome
Meh - the food was underwhelming and bland. Service was great! Sorry For the poor review.
Overall it was a disappointment from previous times we visited. We never the food was exceptional but always enjoyed the quaintness and ambiance. They’ve remodeled to a brighter more modern style which is nice but takes away from the charm it had. The food was lacking. The Veal Parm seemed like it had been frozen, then thawed and prepared. Not fresh. Far too much pasta with the meal as well. Service was ok. Just takes awhile for some things in a restaurant that is really small.
Pleasant, enjoyable with good food.
Food was great, but had to wait 1.5 hours for appetizer. Sous Chef apparently walked out. Had to ask for bred for table and continually ask for drink refills. Had to ask for silverware. Had to get own olive oil and balsamic for bread from another table. Server was too friendly, sometimes sitting down at our table.
food was amazing. Server and cook was great. The owner was even in the restaurant working. Great place to do a date night... highly recommend the mussels
It was our first visit, but we will DEFINITELY be back!
The owner, Don, made a great meal even better. Jessica, our server was personable and attentive. She made some great recommendations for both food and wine. The chefs prepared everything to perfection! Overall and absolutely amazing night!
We are looking forward to coming back and bringing our friends.
I loved going to When in Rome, now that they re-opened and hired nee cooks, the food wasn’t as good, service was a tad lackluster. I did like the new decor. I understand the problem of having new employees, but when the standard of the food suffers, it reflects on the business. I’m hoping that they will improve. My meatballs were over cooked, my pasta was undercooked. My husbands pasta was overwhelmed with lemon so that’s all you tasted.
I will go again in the future to see if there is improvement. Let’s hope
So, I really enjoyed that little place!!
I had dined here before they closed for remodeling and it was wonderful. The calamari was some of the best I ever had. Last nite I ordered it and it was no where near as good. Small pieces over cooked. The pasta was very good but smaller portions. I know everyone is having staffing problems and I am guessing that is the reason service was so slow. Prices have increased, but that is everywhere. I will still dine here again.
Excellent as usual!!! So happy they are back up and running!
Small food portion and over price. I wished I had read the Yelp reviews because most of the recent reviews has the same
Complaints (food portion are small and over price.
Food was outstanding, especially the pasta dishes. Our waitress made our dining experience even better. Definitely will be back soon.
New chef is doing well with a modified version of previous menu, and servers were handling all really well! Glad that it has reopened.
Back open and excellent as always
Service was very long which I would get on a busy night, but it wasn't even halfway full. All of the food we got was extremely bland and didn't resemble an ounce of what the dishes are supposed to be. Carbonara should have a silk like creaminess, but instead it was a pool of liquid at the bottom of the bowl covered in mounds of pancetta that was way overused. Yes the staff was very nice, but our meal was not worth the money charged and quite honestly Macaroni Grill makes better Italian food and I hate Macaroni Grill.
1- can’t walk through the restaurant without bumping into everyone
2- food was NOT even close to how it was before they closed for remodel- portions we half the size. Basically, miss the old chef. So much oil in the pasta, it was actually disgusting
3- charged $5 for the cannoli filling (daughter always received for free when we can before due to her allergy) … something that was fun
4- the owner made several inappropriate comments to other customers (this isn’t a chef boy r dee kind of place) and took wring meals to wrong tables
5- walked in with no hostess stand etc… really strange feeling.
This was one of our favorite places, now… we will never return. Aldo’s is a much better option!!
Food is freshly made by Chef Jason. He cares about his customers.
First time dining at the restaurant, the food, service and staff best I've had in this area in a long time. Will be back many times to dine there
Wonderful food and service. Best Italian food I’ve had since we were in Italy 2 years ago!
This was out first visit. We were seated promptly and were told there was no veal or calamari. We were served promptly but were disappointed in our caprice. Little bits of mozzarella, variety of tomato halves and some greens. The bruschetta had a nice taste but the toasted bread was cold. Our main dishes were good.
The service was superb. The staff was very friendly. The food was exceptional!
The menu has a lot to choose from and if what we had was typical- the rest would be also!
My friend and I sat at the "chef's table" and had a bird's eye view of all the busy-ness of the kitchen. The chef chatted with us throughout the meal, both of which were delicious. Would definitely recommend to friends.
We heard about this restaurant on Facebook and couldn't have been more pleased. The owner was great and extremely knowledgeable about the grapes and region of every wine on his list. I took his recommendations from the wine to the dessert and he was spot on. I can't wait until we return.
We love this place! Never disappointed with any of the dishes we have tried, they are extremely delicious!
Excellent as usual!
We had dinner yesterday at When in Rome. I had seen mixed reviews about service but excellent review about authentic food. Small restaurant with 6-8 tables and one server. I could see why service could be slow, but that was actually one of the best features of the restaurant. Andrea the server was 100% Italian and proud of the restaurant being authentic to Italian food and style of eating. That would be slow and enjoying your meal and company. So true.
Food was "Outstanding" and service was "Excellent" as long as you want to eat in Italian style. You can adjust anything on menu to your taste as long as Chef approves. This is funny as my wife tried to mix a dish with different sauce. We were told that combination didn't work. We followed their lead and my Wife's meal was fantastic.
Do yourself a favor and go to this restaurant.
Love this place! Great food and service!
First time restaurant and I will go back. Eat at Maninioes every Thursday and love that restaurant, but "When in Rome" was a wonderful experience and we will put it into the Thursday lineup as well.
Small and quaint, and wonderful food. Very small place and the kitchen size limits larger accommodations, but last nights meal was great. Chef (Justin) came out to each table and engaged all the patrons.
If you are bad mouthing this place you are one of those people that must get their jollies by being negative in the secret social media word.
Good little restaurant......we will be back.
The food is always delicious and the atmosphere is quaint. Do you feel like you were back in Italy
Food was outstanding but portions far too small for the price.
Excellent food together with fantastic service. Enjoyed everything and will definitely recommend to anyone looking for a great meal.
Everything was prepared to order and just perfect!
First time visit for my birthday! We plan to come back. The service was excellent, both our server and chef Jason were so attentive. The limoncello and tiramisu desserts were fresh and delicious.
Delicious food and our server Annie was outstanding! We will be back.
It was my fiancé Birthday 🥳
The waiter was awesome!!!!!! We even got to meet the Chef which was amazing. Food was great
Simple Italian food with quality taste. Everything home made and fresh. Would recommend if looking for a good satisfying meal.
Went there for Mother’s Day....everything was great! Food and service were outstanding.! We will definitely dine there again!
We dined at "When in Rome" shortly before the pandemic changed our dining lives. It was such a pleasure to walk back in and sit this delightful dining venue. The service was great and the food was what we remembered - excellent. Much thanks to our fabulous server. We'll be back again and again.
Thanks for hosting an unforgettable birthday dinner for my wife. The food was fresh and very delicious! The service was was impeccable. We will most certainly return!
Our new favorite spot in Hampton Roads. Took my wife there for Mother's Day Eve dinner and she said it was her best dining experience ever. We dined traditional Italian style with a five course meal and every course was amazing. The restaurant is setting is very personable and you almost feel like you are in someone's home in Italy. The people there are very friendly and helpful. Cannot say enough positives about When in Rome.
