Service was very poor. We were a party of 4, but our meals arrived at very different times. My fish stew was cold and when I complained, nothing happened. Very poor value for money.
We've been to Volto do Mar before and love the food. Particularly recommend the Iberico ham and the Brazilian fish stew main course. Really welcoming owner who told us about the inspiration for the restaurant. But on this occasion we went before the opera; arrived at 5.45 and explained we needed to leave by 7.10. Despite numerous reminders, they were struggling with inexperienced staff and a rush of customers; our main courses didn't arrive until just before 7. We will go again, but not pre-theatre.
Very good food to an amazing value. Worth a try. The atmosphere is nice as well. Good service. Give the place a try
We arrived before anyone else so got what I consider to be the best seat, in the corner on a round table. Service was great our waiter explained the dishes and made conversation with us.
The food was delicious finger licking good. I would definitely return.
Food is delicious but the service needs improvement. The restaurant also only allows 1.5 hour for dining so it felt very rushed, even when there didn't appear to be people taking our table afterwards.
Dear Anderson, Thank you for your review, as per our records you did stay for 2 hours on your booking Arrival 18:28 and you left at 20:25. We don't ask people do leave if is not necessary but we remember your table and we didn't ask anyone to leave, is not only our restaurant but all the restaurants in London that have this rule and apply if necessary. Would be good if you can tell us how we went wrong on the service provide so we could improve. It was lovely have you. Have a amazing weekend.
Although I really enjoyed my first visit, this time both, the service as well as the food were a let down, service too slow and non attentive and only the croquets saved the meal
Portions were on the small size for what you pay for.Prices reflect that this ia a west end restaurant. But quick lunch service especially if you are going to the theatre for a matinee.
Dear Mel747, Thank you for your review, 25 for 3 courses and 30 for 4 courses for 30 is not expensive when you get free range products and high quality of food. I am sorry you felt that we were small portions when most of customers say is great value for money and generously sized portions. We having put our prices in over 1 year and half despite the affects of covid and Brexit. Isabel
Dining here was of those awful experiences you have to eventually laugh at. Very strange environment, lots of staff making themselves look busy, small restaurant but constantly talking to each other through intercoms.
Spent plenty of time waiting for one sharing starter (turned up cold) and two mains (one of which also cold). Table next to us got fed up of waiting and left mid-dinner. Food was fine but overpriced, £20 for small portion of chicken & frozen chips…Would dissuaded from visiting.
Food as always fantastic. The croquettes and pork are amazing. Front and back office pretty overwhelmed though. Food took forever. They were very apologetic and waved drinks and desserts but we were there for three hours and skipped coffees. Will go again but not on Saturday night.
Epitome of average. And very expensive of such mediocrity. Wouldn’t bother.
Great lunch at Volta. Good services and drinks
Lovely restaurant with excellent Portuguese food. Service was very friendly and efficient. The pre theatre menu was excellent value. Had a delicious bottle of sparkling rose that tasted like a good quality pink champagne.
A fantastic find will definitely be going back.
Bit of a comedy affair service wise. Food OK. Could be good but not quite hitting the mark.
Very poor service, some dishes good some not good. Would not go again
Very good service in a nice and cosy atmosphere with tasty protuguese food. Great wine and one of the best coffee. Definitely recommended!
The food is so poor I can't believe it for the price they charge you
Really lovely food and service. The whole fish for 2 and the green rice was our highlight. The food is sophisticated and well executed. Not too mention so tasty. Thanks for a lovely evening.
I started coming here during lockdown when we had to eat outside on the pavement. It was good then and even better now! The pork dish looked amazing and tasted even better.
Service was friendly and knowledgeable.
A memorable meal.
It has been a big pleasure discovering this restaurant. The food was delicious and the staff was friendly and helpful. We will definitely recommend this place.
Food was good and nice restaurant. However service was very slow, it took 45 minutes to bring our drinks. It ruined the meal as we were waiting around for a while for anything to be brought to our table. We had the set menu which was nice however portions were very small. They gave us free shots which was a nice gesture.
Perfectly acceptable experience but rather suspect the place really fires up and delivers 4 or 5 stars later on in the evening. Early evening felt disorganized and rushed, restaurant felt cold, and while the food was good, if you're not on a diet then you'll be left wanting more.
Difficult to get service, need to wave many times before even get notice by waitress. Food it good, tiny portion tho……
Enjoyed an early pre-theatre family dinner here yesterday. It was a lovely relaxed atmosphere with subtle, not intrusive music. Fantastic drinks such as the white port spritz followed by delicious Portuguese wine. Very tasty food, quite reasonable value.
Attentive and friendly waiting staff. A couple of items ordered were forgotten but easily rectified. Would recommend and come back again.
A lovely experience in the heart of London, the service and food was delightful and I would recommend booking Volta Do Mar.
Thank for an enjoyable meal. Food very good and an interesting introduction to Portuguese cuisine. Wine recommendation spot on.
Good authentic portuguese/brazillian food. Service very slow due to understaffing. Ambience very pleasant - homely feel. Slightly overpriced in all.
One of the nicest meals I have had in a long time
Cosy but airy dining room on the ground floor.
The menu is quite short so check it before you book
The wine is expensive but the cheapest red is excellent
The food was delicious. Fish of the day was a huge sea bass served for 2. It was perfectly cooked.
Service was friendly and knowledgeable- though the waiter was clearly very stretched.
I will certainly return.
Overall food was ok from the set menu. A couple dishes felt dry: sardine pate and salted cod. Chicken mains and meringue desserts were fabulous.
Very enjoyable lunch. Excellent food, good ambience, nice wine, friendly and attentive waiter.
The food was amazing, perfectly cooked and very tasty. We were sitting at the back of the restaurant which wasn’t ideal but overall the restaurant is amazing!
Always a pleasure to eat here - lovely staff and enjoyable food , will be back
It was a shocker, but in fairness I should have heeded the reviews that said the service was poor. We arrived for our table at 22.30 but got nothing to drink til 23.00 and our food arrived at 23.30.
But the worst of it was that there was hardly anything on the menu, probably only 15% of the menu was actually available. And it’s a very short menu in any event.
The food was luke warm generally and not very pleasant.
We were offered a second bottle of wine in recompense but not the wine we originally ordered, something cheaper and not very good.
What I found most annoying was the fact that they blamed the lack of choice on how busy they had been. That’s for them to manage, and if you don’t have decent food to serve, don’t open!!
Really bad experience - I will never be returning. And the bill for this was £134, for 3.
I’m kicking myself - read the reviews!!!
Wow, I haven’t had such a poor experience at a restaurant for a very long time, if not ever! We arrived 15 minutes before our booking time so were happy to sit at the bar whilst having a drink. A fair amount of people were already waiting so we realised quickly something wasn’t right. There was a big table in the private dining room which apparently was the reason why we waited over half an hour to get a drink, without an apology. We were never told anything and when we tried to intercept a member of staff to ask for attention they were all rude without exception. We were sat at our table pretty much an hour after arriving, and had to wait even longer to get served. Then were told our “experience” ie. set menu wasn’t available at the time we booked (Opentable’s mistake?). After a couple of glasses of wine and some decent food we managed to relax a bit. When we got our bill nothing was waived (I’d have expected the cocktails or service charge to be taken off) and we got served a terrible digestive without being asked what we wanted. Got half an apology when we left. I think they are extremely unorganised (we had a lot of time to watch) and even rude between each other. Only one person has control over the till and placing orders and the issue is they clearly do not prioritise bookings over people showing up without one, plus they must take more bookings than they are capable of handling. I am sorry but despite the food being good, it’s not worth the hassle and they pretty much ruined our evening.
The restaurant offers around 6 starters and 6 mains. When we arrived there half of the dishes were not available anymore. We got the sweet potato with beans and the Piri piri chicken that were below average and crazy expensive - given what we got (£18 each).
The gazpacho (starter) was the only good dish that we got.
It is puzzling how this restaurant became a Michelin suggested restaurant.
I am sorry for the main waiter, because he was amazing and did his best to accommodate everybody.
The person who was taking care of was was very polite and friendly. He offered us advice and recommendations and answered all our questions. Highly recommend the catch of the day. It is beautifully made every time (although it was a tad on the saltier side, but not too much, we don’t eat much salt in general so might be a tolerance issue). The Porto is amazing and I suggest you ask for their recommendation. They paired it fantastically with our desert of choice. All in all, will come back for sure!
The food was very good and we ate from the pre-theatre menu which is good value. Unfortunately the experience was let down by disappointing service - slow and a mix up with the order.
Wine didn't come until we were at the mains and service was slow despite having flagged we were pre theatre. Just need much tighter grip on training staff and managing orders. Bug the food was very good!
Lovely evening, really tasty food and a lovely vibe. Service was very slow though, which was a shame as we had plenty of time for three courses. Staff weren’t particularly attentive, we had to chase on our pudding and bill and were practically still eating as we ran out the door. The restaurant was quiet by then too so I don’t really understand what happened. Other than that a really great evening in a really lovely restaurant so would go back.
Am excellent place for a pre theatre lunch or dinner.
Great food. Set menu is very good value. Lovely owners and staff. Would definitely return.
