Tortoise Supper Club
I think been to the Tortoise Club before and had not real recollection. I went there for their martini special which I didn't realize required the purchase of an entree. Nonetheless, we started with dollar oysters and shrimp which were very good. My friend wanted the calamari which she had before and it was swimming in oil. Not joke, when I picked up the calamari it was dripping in fryer oil. I then ordered the walleye and when it arrived at the table I was having trouble cutting it. I shortly realized it was raw and so I sent it back. They promptly replaced it with a new walleye dish. It was good, nothing special. The manager did apologize to me after I sent it back. They didn't comp the bill or other anything else. The found the prices to be high and the food to be mediocre. The server was nice but seemed very swamped in his section with the bar and other tables.
We will definitely go back when we visit Chicago and try the bone marrow and other appetizers when we’re hungrier! As it was I had an excellent carrot / turmeric soup and we both had the out-of-this-world meatloaf. Excellent server; my only quibble is my soup and my companion’s salad came out minutes after I had my first sip of an excellent high-end old fashioned. That’s not pacing I expect in a classy place like this. Wonderful ambience. The owners created a wonderful time machine of a supper club with rich woods, big comfortable booths, and perfect lighting. We stopped by the 1919 Steinway Grand with a family
history, which we’ve read is used for excellent jazz performances selected nights. Anyway, a great find near the riverfront; highly recommended.
Service is outstanding starting with Bruce on the phone when making our reservations and then at the door when we arrived (Funny Man). Drinks and food very tasty and at a fair value. The musical group was the top.
Great service. Live jazz trio superb...
Tuna poke was delicious
We have been to the Tortoise Club many times over the years and a lunch for my husband’s birthday seemed like a great place to celebrate. When we were shown to our table there was a birthday card, signed by the owners of the Club, waiting for us. A few minutes later our server appeared and brought two complimentary glasses of bubbly. What a wonderful surprise! We both ordered the Prime Rib Sandwich which included some very tasty fries and, since we waited a few extra minutes for our entree, a second glass of bubbly!
Does it have ambiance? It’s a beautiful restaurant full of warm beautiful wood, reminiscent of the supper clubs of old, but better, with attentive and courteous staff. We can’t wait to return, it’s one of our favorites!
The food was great and the service was fantastic. We enjoyed every minute there and will definitely return.
Bruce greets us at the door, friendly and kind interested in us, then sits us with an introduction to Chad our server. Chad expediently increased our dining experience and we could not thank him enough! The food is amazing and a true treasure to Chicago!
It was such a great time with even better atmosphere. The life jazz band was an added touch. Even though it was a late night dinner, we didn’t feel rushed and the food was still impeccable. I would love to go back.
Delicious. Service was excellent. Attentive with out being annoying. Beautiful dining room
Just an awesome experience!
The food was beyond expectations. Service was stellar, very much enjoyed our waitresses recommendations and helpfulness. I will absolutely be returning!
What an outstanding supper club. We were celebrating our anniversary, and they made the evening special with complimentary champagne and a nice note at our table when we arrived. Our server was outstanding, she was attentive and super pleasant. The food was superb. We will definitely return and recommend to friends and family!
First time dining at Tortoise Supper Club and we truly enjoyed our wonderful service and meal. We enjoyed the octopus as an appetizer and it was ver well prepared. We ordered the Alaskan Halibut and New York Strip, both were absolutely delicious and the flavors were amazing. We ended with the grasshopper milkshake which was a big hit. We will definitely return to this establishment.
I went to TSC with my wife and my parents and we all thoroughly enjoyed our experience there. We ordered a wide variety of main courses and everyone thought the food was great! Try the calamari as an appetizer and you won’t be disappointed.
My wife and I chose this restaurant to celebrate our anniversary. We expected a nice romantic location with live jazz and good food. The inside was nice, although very loud to the point that conversation was at times difficult. We were unable to hear the live jazz from our table. The food was good, on par with other upper end restaurants in the city. However, our service was far from desirable. Our waiter never introduced himself or interacted with us in any way. When taking our order, it felt more like a structured demand of what we wanted rather than that of a pleasant conversation. Empty and unused wine glasses and drink menus remained on our table for the entirety of our meal, and overall we walked away disappointed with the overall experience. To make matters worse, the couple two tables down was sung to for their anniversary and treated to a dessert with candles. Our waiter had no clue it was even our anniversary, even though it was stated in our reservation. My assumption is we had a sub-par waiter, and suffered because of it. Unfortunately, with so many other quality options in the city, we will not be rushing back here anytime soon.
It was a birthday dinner for my spouse. Everyone was more than friendly. It was their attention to a diner that will have me coming back and definitely recommend
Third visit. Always consistent. Superb service. Grasshopper adult milkshake is a favorite dessert.
This restaurant was first class all the way. My family was in town for a quick visit to Chicago and I found this restaurant via recommendations on Yelp. It did not disappoint. It reminded me of restaurants from the days of Frank, Sammy & Dean. From the minute you walk in the door, the staff treats you like royalty. The food was exquisite from the shrimp scampi appetizer to the scallops that were fresh and meted in your mouth. Can't wait to go back to Chicago to try some of their other dishes.
A Perfect Evening!
We were so happy we chose Tortoise Supper Club for the place to celebrate my sister's special birthday!
As we entered, we were immediately transported back to an earlier, genteel time in Chicago history. Every member of the well-trained and professional staff was welcoming and attentive to our needs.
The atmosphere was that of an elegant, private club with an comfortable feel. The vibe in both the restaurant and lounge was exciting and energetic, while still allowing for good conversation. The background music greatly enhanced the mood.
Our server, Sergio anticipated our needs and was helpful in our food decisions. We all were extremely happy with our starters and entrées. The Walleye, Halibut, Prime Rib and Pork Tenderloin were exceptional. We shared bottles of Champagne and Chardonnay.
We shared a few desserts - most notable were the Brandy Alexander Pie, Tortoise Pie and the Peanut Butter Pie. Rarely do I rave about the coffee, but here it is outstanding!
We left through the Lounge, and my husband and I look forward to spending time there on our next visit.
Entrees did not include salads.
Drinks were fantastic.
Second time and excellent. Our server Luke was incredible. He knew every aspect of the menu, plus. Great dining experience. The noise level is a bit load, but still great. Want to stop in one night, just to hang out in the bar and listen to the jazz.
If the live jazz, cool vibe, and impeccable service hadn't already sold me, that Meatloaf would have. It's beyond comprehension. Smoky, luscious, with a great salt crust reminiscent of a great ribeye and good to the last bite. But I still can't decide if that or the perfectly spicy Chilean Sea Bass was my favorite! Coconut rice?! Come on now... Don't skip the Poké appetizer, and if you dare save room for dessert, the Tortoise namesake is silky chocolate decadence, and the peanut butter pie is an upscale version of one of life's perfect foods (seems to be a trend here). Can't wait to go back!
Took two business associates to TSC on a Tuesday night. I enjoy the great service that is of the quality of a chophouse yet a scalable menu that has some supperclub favorites along with steaks and other cuts of meat and lastly seafood. Everyone can find something. The service was outstanding and the food was also very good. Can be a little noisy for a business conversation but overall I got two more people to appreciate and rave about this gem in River North.
It was my girlfriend’s birthday and in just 15 minutes after making the reservation the staff welcomed us for her birthday, had a happy birthday greeting on the table and offered us free champagne and dessert. Staff was very friendly and the music from the jazz band in the bar was a perfect touch for our dinner experience.
I really wanted to like this restaurant. Unfortunately, we had quite a few small things that led to an overall unpleasant experience. The dining area is very very dark. Sets a nice mood, but very hard to see things like the menu. The lights could be brought up just a little and still have the same ambiance. We ordered the pork belly as an appetizer which was overcooked, making it very tough. For dinner, my boyfriend ordered the pork chop which we had read such great reviews for. Unfortunately, we were both disappointed and it was quite ordinary. I had the sea bass which was also just okay. We had the spinach which was fine, but plain and overpriced. Our server spent a lot of time with the table of young ladies next to us, and didn't check on us enough - my boyfriend went without a beverage refill for the majority of our meal. The wine that I ordered had a massive amount of sediment in each glass (a little over a tablespoon). The server refilled a dirty glass which clearly had sediment all over the bottom. I had to request a new glass. We took dessert to go - I have never tasted carmel I didn't like until now. The tortoise pie is not recommended. The next day, I was not feeling very well and I attribute it to something I came across during our dinner. I feel terrible that I had a bad experience here, but overall, we had bad experiences with the ambiance, the food and the service. There are so many choices in the area, and I really wish we would have chosen something else.
Fabulous meal and great service! We tried a new place on our latest trip to Chicago- will definitely go again on our next trip.
Great service; great food; great experience!!! I like it better than Gibsons and thats saying alot.
Group of 7 of us for dinner at 8pm on a Friday night. We enjoyed the talented jazz musicians in the bar before sitting down for dinner. The place was jammed, and there must have been a corporate function in the main room. At least 5 tables of 8 were abuzz, including someone making a speech at some point. The table of 5 women next to us cackled a little louder with each sip of their drinks, and we were placed at the table near the kitchen. Result: IT WAS TOO LOUD; we couldn't hear each other at all. So unpleasant, annoying and embarrassing for me, because I had recommended this place to our out-of-town guests. Two of us wanted Beef Wellington, but they had run out by 8:30pm. The duck, porterhouse and filet dishes were excellent, but two of us had the skirt steak, which was so chewy and tough that we couldn't eat some pieces (ugh, what's the etiquette for what to do with a half-chewed piece of meat?) I should have sent it back and ordered something else, but that was just more annoying, and so I carefully selected some edible pieces.
I will go back to Tortoise to enjoy a drink and small bite in the bar, but I feel it's too risky to take someone there for dinner.
I brought 4 friends in who were visiting from San Francisco and they loved the entire experience. The service, food and quality of food and drink is outstanding. The staff is really top notch and makes you feel like they are just tickled that you are spending part of your evening with them. This was my second visit and will defintely return. Thank you, Tortoise Club.. just perfect.
Great service. Neat supperclub vibe and ambiance. Food was above average. Cool place. Will go again.
I ordered the Amish chicken and it was soooo dry. The carrots we're not fully cooked and the mashed potatoes had no flavor. I'm not sure how this place stays in business...must be a lot of tourists keeping them afloat. It was honestly one of the worst meals I've ever paid for.
Second time in a week because it was so good the first time.
Tried this place for lunch with a client. Would have loved to sit outside as the seating is very inviting. We sat inside and I had a delicious meal. Branzino with a butter caper sauce. Outstanding. Our waiter was perfectly attentive and personable. Will definitely go back but want to try it for dinner next tiem.
Second time here for dinner. Wednesday evening, didn't seem to be very busy. Food and service were outstanding. This is what a "supper club" is supposed to be.
Lovely dinner with my husband. One of our favorite stops when visiting Chicago. Tried the new grilled pork loin cutlets with asparagus and whipped potatoes, delicious! A wonderful glass of wine from their superior selection paired with impeccable service from Chad our waiter. Look forward to returning to try other new items on the menu.
This was my first time here. I absolutely loved it! The décor, the food, the service by Chad - everything was perfect and impressive.
Not our first visit to Tortoise Club and won’t be our last either. The scratch kitchen and bar rarely disappoint. Love the Whiskey sour from the bar and the selection of fresh oysters. Always try the seasonal soup or if it’s not to your liking, their French Onion is always spot on. Our server Chime was a delight. Made for a great dinner before theater!
Our visit was a present to me from my daughter for Mother’s Day. Both of us had an exceptional time in Chicago and at your restaurant. Our waiter - I apologize I don’t remember his name - was the BEST customer service that I have ever been too. The description of the specials made you want some of everything and I don’t like seafood but he made that even appetizing. Our service was superb! The meal was delicious! And the ambience was perfect. It made my present from my daughter exceptionally special. Thank you so very kindly for such a wonderful experience.
Amazing evening at Tortoise Supper Club! The service was outstanding, the food was perfect, and the drinks even better. It is family owned and we felt like part of that family. Thank you to Kendra for the menu and cocktail recommendations.
