Headed by Jason Ang (ex Gilt Lounge and Sokyo) and bar manager Yoshi Onishi (ex Stitch and Victoria Room), Tokyo Bird combines the best of Tokyo’s yakitori-ya and classic cocktail bars in an intimate Sydney laneway small bar.
Loved this place. Will definitely be back. They made my birthday celebrations a sweet treat with my posse of loved ones around sharing in delicious Japanese fare.
Very knowledgeable bartenders that provided a memorable journey through Japanese Whiskey
With a charming atmosphere, wall to wall whisk(e)y and an authentic yakatori experience it is difficult to get an experience like this outside of going to Japan. I highly recommend going for a relaxed bit to eat with good simple dishes.
It was good overall. My husband really liked the list of Japanese wines & whiskeys. The foods were okay, but not too great. Quite pricy for the portions. However, the ambience was outstanding! Enjoyed the experience overall.
We celebrated a birthday. The staff went our of their way to make it special and engage with us when they knew we love our whiskeys. On the expensive side, but worth it. Great place in a laneway, would definitely be back.
Awesome place, lots of character and the food is so good, highly rated!
Came to celebrate my brother's birthday. A pleasant surprise and a local gem. I loved the friendly service and the relaxed atmosphere. Amazing cocktails and I loved the skewers! This was my first visit but I will definitely be coming back again.
Tokyo Bird is unfortunately what a white man who has never been to Japan thinks an izakaya should be like. Except worse, because this man has never stepped foot in any kitchen or been behind a bar in his life.
Food: Rice cakes were good. Everything else (skin, livers, heart, especially the tsukune!!!!) was extremely over-salted. Casual Japanese fare tends to be saltier, but what they did with our skewers that night... It was like they'd drowned the chicken in the Dead Sea, gave it a salt burial, then removed and marinated it in soy sauce overnight for good measure. Thank goodness we had another booking at Chaco Bar that night and were able to comfort ourselves with their much better yakitori.
Drinks: Whisky Sour was ok. Flavours of the Old Fashioned and 'Shiso Hot' cocktails were not balanced -- especially the latter: intentionally served at room temperature, it tasted like a tincture for pneumonia. At the very least, since described as "warm and soothing", it should actually have been served warm???
Service: Staff are poorly trained. They were nice for the most part, but in our 1.5 hours there they came by our table 6 times (we counted) to ask if we wanted to order more food/ drinks (even before our dishes and drinks were empty). Our bill was about $140 for 3 people so I don't think we deserved to be pressured like that.
Cracking spot for a boys night. The yakitori menu is a perfect match for the asahi on tap and the whisky high balls.
Best whisky bar in Sydney. Food and vibe are awesome
Food was great, service friendly ......BUT forgot our last dish, 3 reminders and 3 subsequent apologies and an hour later we had our dish......
Still, I will go back.
What a great place to have delicious drinks and food in a welcoming atmosphere. Thanks to Marco and all the staff. :)
Great little Japanese bar/restaurant specializing Yakitori and Japanese whisky. Cozy but comfy ambiance and food is simple but good. Especially impressed with the service - all the waitstaff were very attentive and friendly, which made our dining experience even better.
Absolutely fantastic! The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. Great Vibe inside the bar and Marco made sure we were looked after and happy. In the good books with the girlfriend, great place for a date.
Music was great, staff also helped in creating a unique atmosphere. Loved the friendly service. Good location, only a 5 minute walking distance away from Central Station.
great drinks menu...
Would recommend to anyone that likes Japanese food!!
We loved the cauliflower entre!!
Amazing service and even better food honestly its a hidden jem you could ask for a best spot to start a weekend could have stayed there all night.
Stand out whisky, food and staff :)
We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
The gyoza are AMAZING! Great intimate atmosphere. Delicious cocktails.
Love this place - great Japanese food, beer and whiskey
Loved our drinks and food at Tokyo Bird. A fantastic little gem ! We will be back!
Met up with friends that were in town. It's great to have little bites to eat over fun cocktails.
Better than the food I had in japan! And if u don’t get the tempura cauliflower than u will never live
Enjoyable as always, great drinks, food and atmosphere.
What a top bar! Extremely attentive staff with great knowledge of Japanese Whiskeys, huge selection and incredible Japanese style bar food. A must for any whiskey enthusiast or anyone wanting a drink with atmosphere.
My Birthday celebrations were fantastic!
Excellent time was had. We enjoyed the cocktails and scotch and the knowledge of the staff on these products. Highly recommended.
It is a great place but for some reason the service was bad when I went I’d go back because the food was amazing and the drinks but service could be a little faster
Brilliant. Great staff, outstanding food. Really enjoyed it.
Food and cocktails were nice but the food was so outrageously expensive I probably wouldn't come back. Value was definitely lacking. Service was great, couldn't fault that.
Great night! I’ll be back again. Always great service
Tokyo Bird is a hidden gem, tucked away in Belmore Lane. The food was great, the cocktails were not your stock standard and the service was efficient and friendly. We'll definitely visit again.
Tokyo Bird was ok but I think it's better to go there with the primary purpose of drinking and then having a few dishes to snack on, as opposed to going there for a meal. The sauce for the crispy cauliflower was too salty. The chicken meatballs were too dry and the chicken skin wasn't crispy enough. The cocktails are great.
Good service and great food! Sometimes hard to hear each other talk and the ventilation system needs to be improved, a little smoky from the kitchen / warm from the lack of air circulation. Apart from that would go back!
Absolutely Love this place. Food was so amazing the first time we went so we made an effort to go again before we left Sydney and they did not disappoint.
Delicious Japanese share plates, great whiskey selection, sake and amazing cocktails.
