Thousand Pound Wine Store
Victoria’s wine canteens are a rapidly growing regional obsession amongst city barflies.
Grape aficionados haven't retreated into their cellars to sulk, they are venturing out of town
to find the best boutique sip three hours north of Melbourne.
Reinventing the grape genre, Thousand Pound tosses out stuffy pretences,
blurring the boundaries between city and country into an underserved hood,
creating funky, affordable vin lists paired with Simon Arkless’s chef-driven fare.
Sip and swirl your way through the best wines the region has to offer or venture
globally from your seat at the bar.
We enjoyed some lovely Rose wines with a selection of beginners for a meal. Well priced, very enjoyable food and atmosphere will definitely return
Too noisy to communicate properly ! ....& only 4 of us! Food was delicious though.
We enjoyed our evening food and service great
Wine i think a tad expensive in my view
But atmosphere was great indeed
Had a fantastic evening at Thousand Pound.
Fantastic service from Alex & the staff, brilliant steak & very tasty sparkling red!
Superb food, wine and service in groovy rather than rich upper class surroundings.
Great service and excellent food. The place was not too busy and there was not too much noise.
I have been many times before. Always a great time!
Maybe. I found the wine choices over priced. The food was a bit pretentious for a tapas bar whilst also skipping on quality with the chips (frozen ones you can buy from the grocery store!). Make the share platters a little more generous as they're being shared
Possibly the best meal I have ever had. Just amazing!
great food, value and good selection of wines at a reasonable price with a modern twist in acountry town.
we had a beautiful evening.our food was delicious, our staff wre so kind, helpful and attentive. couldn't have wished for a better night. thanks to everyone concerned.Mariela & Peter Joyce
Very disappointed in the food. Their most expensive steak, Scotch fillet, was pre sliced (what's that about?), chewy and stringy. The steak came with fries, which you would expect to be served with a pub meal or a McDonald burger. The rocket salad consisted of 80% iceberg lettuce and 10% pear and cheese and 10% rocket. Presentation of the salad was extremely poor, almost as though the 'top layer' of pear and cheese was positioned to disguise the fact that the salad consisted of mostly iceberg lettuce. We expected to pay top dollar for a beautiful meal at this restaurant, it has previously been out first pick in town, this experience was so poor, it now it will be our last choice and we will go to the local pub for a better cooked meal, even though it has less ambience. We did inform the restaurant on the night and were given two free drinks as a discount, which was much appreciated though not enough to keep our loyalty. It was never about the money, but about the quality, and we wouldn't risk the chance of experiencing such a poor meal again.
We dined with friends and had a very enjoyable evening with excellent food and wine.
Great ambiance, if a little dark to see menus. Great service and wine selection. Food overpriced for size, taste and quality. Very limited choice on the Menu.
Lovely evening. Enjoyed the food wine ambience. Will go again next time we’re in Rutherglen.
Great place and space, a real buzz and great food. Less formal than the other big high-end restaurant in Rutherglen, a lot more energetic and just good eats and wine!
We enjoyed the food, the service was good to start with but waned as they got busy. I would recommend the place as the food was very nice but with the caveat that it is incredibly noisy! We could hear each other but we could also hear every word of the conversations coming from people 2 and 3 tables away, it was very annoying.
We loved our evening! Our only complaint really was that the steaks were served to us only warm and would have been lovely hot! The scallops were exceptional! We enjoyed the atmosphere though low seats for older people might be a good option!
Couldn’t read menu because it was too dark, nice food but a little expensive
We were there for a birthday dinner. Food was amazing service great. And make sure you get the bartender to make you a cocktail. 😁🍸. Great night.
Fantastic food great selection of wine and knowledgeable staff.
Great food and atmosphere. Fairly priced too for what you get. Recommend if you are in town
Noisy but not enough to turn us off it. The waiter was great. Wines good ( after a spritzig issue with the red) first bottle was replaced without question.
Disappointed with the porterhouse - cooked well but cold by the time we received it. The butter didn’t even melt on it!
BUT I’m told the Rissoto was the ‘best ever’!!
We will go back for sure.
The steak was poked perfectly and presented beautifully. Service friendly and of a high standard and overall an extremely enjoyable evening.
We had a very special meal. The Mirror Dory main was especially enjoyable. The service from Charlie our waiter was very attentive and made our night most memorable. The ambience of the restaurant was also very pleasant
We had a lovely young man serve us but since it was his first night, he knew nothing about the menu. A little more training prior to being our waiter would have been appreciated. The meals were expensive and fairly small servings. The wine was extraordinarily expensive considering the Shiraz we selected to enjoy with our meal sold at the cellar door for $29 and we were charged from memory around $80. Considering the local winery delivers the wine to your restaurant at no charge and gives you a discount on the cellar door price, I consider this "robbery". My meal in particular was very tasty but the men ordered steak and it was expensive considering the size of the meal.
Rutherglen lucked out when 1000Pound turned up. A funky, lively venue with a top-notch wine list and a varied, well-prepared menu. This was our third time here and we’ve never been let down. And we come from Canberra to eat here.
My wife had Dory matched to a brilliant Austrian Grüner with crunchy acidity to spear through the fish and I had a rich local Shiraz with my rare Porterhouse done to a tee. Well done 1000 Pound and keep it up. Only minus is the high noise level but Not an issue if you’re not half-deaf like me.
I gave Thousand Pound 3 stars. The risotto we had was more soupy that what I expect from a risotto and the most expensive one I have ever had at $34. It was a small portion in a very shallow bowl. Very limited choices in mains - just 3. It was noisy but I guess some people enjoy that. It was open late hence why we gave it a try. The service was great. Staff friendly and prompt. The cheese platter was nice though for $25, it was only small portions of cheese. Wines are pricey but nice selection. If it was my place, I would make food more affordable and offer a bigger selection with better presentation and taste.
My husband and I had a wonderful night last night at Thousand Pound. The food was amazing and cooked to perfection and the staff were incredibly lovely. Can’t wait to have dinner there again.
Thousand Pound offers great food and wine , and has a great atmosphere. Good for catching up with friends.
The food was really delicious we shared a selection of small plates followed by a very generous cheese board.
Fantastic and varied wine list with reasonable prices, we loved the wine bar atmosphere and buzzing vibe.
I can highly recommend it, a great find and and not to be missed.
hubby and I and our guest loved Thousand Pound - third time visiting and never disappoints. Was lovely to chat with Eliza for a few minutes as well. Fabulous service!!!
Nice for a casual meal they were very accommodating with request for share meals. Also good selection of local wines. Nice and relaxing .
Staff are very efficient patient and helpful. Food was excellent and wines were very good. Menu was not extensive but this did not matter as Each of our part ordered a different item and we were all equally satisfied. Extremely grateful a staff memeber offered to call a taxi and it came!
Excellent food and service. The wine list was excellent.
We couldn't fault Thousand Pound..waitstaff were knowledgeable. .friendly and efficient. .food was beautifully cooked and presented..a big list of good wines..try the Saint Leonards Durif..we returned twice as it was soo good and we are quite fussy..thankyou..
We are regular dinners at Thousand Pound. Our waitress was less than average this time, in both; appearance and attitude. We have not been served by her previously. Otherwise all good. Thank you
Beautiful food and friendly, professional service.
Great ambiance, service and food. Wonderful selection of local and regional wines.
A few of us in our group had been wanting to go to Thousand Pound for a while now and all our expectations were exceeded!
It's was a great atmosphere made better by wonderful staff who obviously love the place they work because it shows in their service!
The food was delicious, and everyone was happy with their choice - although a bit disappointed we didn't leave room for dessert (there is always next time!)
The wine list was fantastic! The main meal menu is mainly steak options - but it is definitely the way you want to go = cooked perfectly.
Fantastic layout too with large groups altogether and the more intimate room for small groups and couples - well done.
We will return - again and again!
