The Terrace Cafe at Royal Botanic Gardens
Bookings cannot be taken to reserve tables for guests selecting from the a la carte menu. There is ample seating both inside and outside the cafe throughout the day and hot food is delivered to the table by our staff with a table stand number system.
Beautiful location by the lake however the high tea diners are mixed in with the general public at the Terrace.
The service was unfortunately lacking, we seated ourselves and had to track down a staff member to let them know we had arrived and we ready to begin the High Tea.
The food and drinks on offer were great quality.
There may be better options for high tea where the price you pay guarantees top service...wouldn't go back.
We enjoyed a High Tea with 13 guests to celebrate a special event. The service was friendly but not intrusive, and Sacha went out of her way to look after our special requests on the day. The food was well presented and there was plenty of it. I wish that I had enough room left for the beautiful macarcons and petit fours!
Not value for money. Sandwiches were ordinary, cakes dry and the pies were not made on the premises and we were the only ones there for high tea. We would have done better to order coffee and a Devonshire tea that would not have cost us an arm and a leg.
We 3 sisters had a lovely birthday high tea and even copied some ideas for our Mums upcoming 90th birthday. Amy was a lovely waitress! Courteous, friendly, efficient and careful to give us the space we needed. The food was delicious and we had the lovely surprise of a birthday treat for Rosemary. Highly recommend to our friends and family. Cheers, Kate
A very good high tea; ideal for a special family birthday. Excellent friendly service with good attention for a vegan member and two children.
Had a fabulous High Tea here with a friend, service was friendly and helpful and the view was fabulous!
Went here for a high tea for my mums 60th. Staff were absolutely lovely and made her feel so special.
Slight cafeteria atmosphere and not the smartest tables and chairs - however on the plus side excellent standard and variety of food, pretty china and attentive service from delightful waitress made this a memorable experience.
A surprise birthday celebration
Enjoyed sparkling and coffee and iced water
Delicious savoury food
Scenic summer vista by lake
The staff were friendly and made us all feel welcome and important. Our main negative was the amount of time we waited for the food to come as we had some time restraints.
Apart from this, we had a really enjoyable experience and the food was good, especially the scones.
We had a lovely experience at the Terrace. 8 seated comfortably on a large square table. High tea is always a special treat and the staff made sure we were well looked after. Food was delicious served on a beautiful tea setting. Champagne and hot drinks were part of the price. The views out across the lake and gardens were stunning on a beautiful sunny day. The noise level was the only downside.... So many lunchtime patrons made for a busy and noisy venue.
I shared High Tea with a dear friend who has been in ill health. We thoroughly enjoyed our High Tea at the Botanics. Ned was a very attentive host and the High Tea was delicious and had the added advantage of a lake view. I have already recommended the experience to others. Food was delicious and as a vegetarian I was well catered for. Ned a very gracious host!
lovely High Tea, generous glasses of champagne, beautiful surroundings, good value for money
The food, service and position by the lake on a sunny spring day made for a wonderful experience
My wife’s birthday and a wander around the gardens. Thought high tea might be a nice way to go. And is was all I hoped for. The service was great and the food excellent. Overlooking the lake on a cool but clear day made the ambiance perfect.
Thank you - We were a large family group of 14, children, parents, grandparents and friends. High tea to celebrate a special event and everything was great. The staff were friendly attentive and accommodating and really made an effort to add to our enjoyment. The High Tea was delicious and suited all tastes and the presentation really caps it off. We would definitely do it again.
Thank you to your kind staff who fielded all my initial enquiries and then ensured our event was a joy.
We had a great fathers day high tea. Food was excellent, varied and enough for our group. 4 children were at this event and they enjoyed themselves in the relaxed atmosphere, as did their parents. The staff- Bonnie was very helpful and the organizer, Emily had made sure no nuts were involved in the food as 2 of the children have nut allergies. Grandpa left a couple of his presents and when we went back to retrieve them Bonnie had put them aside for us and Emily had rung to let us know. Bravo!
Fabulous experience with great food, lovely table and attentive staff member who served our table
The food was great, our service from our waiter was excellent, the views were delightful but the ambience in the room was disappointing with the large public crowds in the cafe.
We booked a High Tea for my Mother’s Birthday. Food was excellent- nothing Nass produced or processed. Good variety of sweet and savoury. Compared to other places in the city that offer high teas this was excellent value. We were seated at the window with a lovely outlook over the gardens. Staff were very attentive. Would not hesitate to go again.
This is the idael spot for a special occasion .The ambiance is exceptional and the service is friendly.
An excellent Mother's Day High Tea with my husband's allergies remembered and catered for perfectly. Our waitress was very attentive and ensured our every need was catered for. We were also asked if we wished to have our table moved so it was not in direct sunshine - terrific service.
I wish to highly recommend the Terrace Restaurant for High Tea. We dined there last Monday. The staff were wonderfully attentive and coped with my hour late arrival, looking after my interstate visitors and then speedily bringing my sparkling wine and High Tea upon my arrival. My two year old grand niece was able to play happily near our table, which was by the window so we had a magnificent view of the lake. My visitors verdict "Best Cup of Tea in Melbourne".
Lovely High Tea but very noisy place food great NED was wonderful young man.
The high tea was memorable and enjoyable
Em, our hostess, was anazing.
Bubbly, friendly and always had a smile
The venue was perfect and the punt ride before the high tea capped of a wonderful experience
We had a lovely High Tea after our relaxing Punting trip around the lake in the gardens. Would highly recommend it to others who may be interested in an enjoyable morning/afternoon.
The combination of High Tea with the Punt Ride is a Gem of an experience
Went to the Terrace especially for the High Tea.. Definitely enjoyed the food and the surroundings..The staff were great
It is a pity that the High tea cant be away from the rest of what is going on in the cafe as it is very busy and noisy at times. Despite all that we enjoyed
Outstanding Service from Ned at the Botanical Gardens High Tea - went there for my Mum’s 70th Birthday and we all enjoyed it. Ned was fantastic and nothing was a bother.
Food, service, surroundings were all great! No complaints at all.
The food was great and the service relatively prompt. The venue was not what we expected. The juxtaposition of the high tea within the kiosk area makes it feel less special and it is very noisy. A separate room or area would be better.
High Tea at the Terrace was a delight. A special occasion for my daughters first birthday with her visiting grandma. The staff were fabulous - Nothing was a bother to them, arranging tables to meet our needs, extremely friendly and our grandma had a glass of sparkles on the house. This is the same venue that we were married in a few years ago and we love to return for other special occasions. Buzzing venue with a beautiful view of the gardens.
Our journey to this hidden treasure in The Royal Botanic Gardens started with a successful bid at a silent auction at the RFDS Going the Distance dinner, and ended by using it to entertain my sister and her husband for High Tea at the 11am session, on a glorious Melbourne day, with the ornamental lake and punt as a back drop.
The perfect spot for such an occasion.
We had lovely service during our high tea dining - beautiful display of the food and a lovely wine.
High tea to celebrate sisters 60th Birthday. Set up was perfect, near Windows and away from casual diners. Service spot on and food to die for. Would recommend and go again!
The High Tea itself is lovely. BUT, it is inside of a cafeteria! It was SO LOUD. I expected to have High Tea in a lovely room with some classical music playing. What they do at the Terrace is reserve a couple of window seats in a large cafeteria. The tea itself is really fun and lovely, but the atmosphere is too hectic and makes it hard to relax and enjoy yourself. Lots of screaming children, and a huge line to get in which makes it very confusing to even know where to go if you've booked.
Our waiter was exceptional (South American I think) and made us feel relaxed and nothing was too difficult for him.The food was great, the view out the window looking at the lake and surroundings was beautiful and time passed by very quickly because we were enjoying the moment so much
A wonderful way to celebrate my mother's birthday. The setting was beautiful, the table exquisitely laid with lovely china, and the food was delicious. The best part was the service - Rodrigo was friendly, timely, and delivered the best service we've seen anywhere.
Celebrated my mother's 80th birthday with High Tea. We all loved it, it was very special. Although the wait staff were very attentive, we felt we could've been checked on a little more often.
We have booked high tea and had lovely time. However next time we would just order food at the restaurant
It was very very disapointing. As soon as we walked in, we were all shocked by the crowd and noise. If we know that the place is a mix of cafe and high tea, we would never ever go there. The place is not even a proper cafe, it looks like a tourists centre with a canteen inside... Quite embarasing to have high tea inside and not worth for the money. We should have spend $10 each to get a coffee there to have the same location, same view. Food and service are bad. You will be served frozen pie.
