The Tasting Kitchen on Abbot Kinney in Venice originally opened in 2009, with a young, newcomer chef - Casey Lane - who had just moved to Los Angeles from Portland. The name and concept were one and the same, with Lane refreshing a tasting-style menu almost nightly based on what was available at the markets. Known for its handwritten menus, and luxe bohemian vibes complete with an olive tree growing in the middle of the dining room, the restaurant quickly became one of the iconic tentpoles on the famed Westside boulevard. Here, Lane made a name for himself in the LA culinary scene and helped create a hot spot for locals and a destination for an audience beyond.

Chef Casey Lane’s approach is simultaneously serious with technique and relaxed in delivery. The menu will once again be ingredient-driven, with bold flavors, live fire, and coursed with intention.

    I was so excited to come back to the TK after so many years. I was disappointed, unfortunately, primarily by the poor service. The waiter did not seem to know what he was talking about, representing the cocktails, wines by the glass, and some of the food poorly. The food was quite good, especially the branzino which was exceptional. There should be more lettuce leaves provided, however, and the waiter made a big deal about us asking for more, saying that we would not be charged. For extra lettuce leaves!! The other dishes were pitifully small for the price, but good. The wines by the glass were lackluster and given the restaurant, I expected better and remembered that the choice used to be better. Overall very pricey and very noisy.

    The vegetable dishes were outstanding and the highlight of the meal. The leaks, the tomatos and mozzarella, the onions that accompanied the steak...really memorable. Enjoyed all the pastas and mains. A cool vibe and fun place. Glad it's bad

    While we did love the food, the prices were out of this world! I could justify the branzino at $85 for the 2 of us, still high, but ok. The appetizers were skimpy and very expensive. Wines by the glass were also very pricey. I would have happily returned, but not at this price point which is unfortunate.

    I do think this restaurant is a little overrated and overpriced. Their service was not the greatest and the food is very overpriced for what it tastes like. Their cheesecake, charcuterie board and drink selections are good though i will say. I dont think this place is worth it for dinner to be honest especially if youre vegetarian.

    The Male Host was not the nicest to my buddy. My Server Taylor was very nice & offered great recommendations. We sat in the bar lounge area which I liked because we could both sit in the booth & see the whole restaurant. Beautiful & intimate ambiance. Cesar Salad was tasty! GREEN GARGANELLI | BOLOGNESE VACCA ROSSA | PARMESAN was my favorite! Sauce had great flavor. TAGLIATELLE | CHANTERELLE | TESA | SAGE | PARM was also good. Overpriced but good vibes & food. Taylor had pretty eyes so that helped 😂 Drinks were ok.

    I had been trying to book a table at this restaurant for quite some time, but the only option available was always communal seating. Finally, I managed to reserve a private table, and my wife and I were looking forward to our visit. Despite several other tables being available in the dining room, we were seated at a table literally no more than two inches away from another couple’s table. At that point, I genuinely couldn’t understand how this was any different from communal seating. As for the food, nothing was particularly memorable or worth coming back for. The zucchini flowers with crab were especially disappointing — a completely underwhelming dish, certainly not worth $38. Overall, I found the restaurant highly overrated in almost every respect. The interior design is probably the only thing that lives up to the hype. Unfortunately, the dining experience does not.
