The waiter did not seem to know what he was doing. He rushed us in a restaurant that was empty on a Monday night. The bus boys kept trying to deliver food to our table that had not been ordered by us. And there were charges for items not ordered on the final bill.
In addition, for such a casual restaurant, prices are high. The fried chicken is $25.00 and does not come with any sides. A side of mashed potatoes is $11.00, which brings the chicken cost up to $36.00. Very pricey for pub food.
Although we were recommended to this restaurant it just was not my cup of tea. In all fairness it was a packed house on a Saturday night. We were seated right away with our reservation. Mainly the service was just average. Our waiter had a lot to attend to with some large parties. My niece enjoyed her flatbread very much but my fried chicken sandwich was somewhat overcooked and tough. Also the price of a glass of house white wine was a bit much, and I am a native New Yorker so very aware of pricing. In general just a mediocre experience.
We waited an hour. There was no place to sit to wait.
Very noisy once we were able to sit.
I would NEVER recommend this restaurant !!!
Don't get the pretzel appetizer special. Overall it's a fun place that if you want to fine something near the Park
Best server ever!
Fun place. Our favorite neighborhood restaurant.
We had a reservation with friends for the restaurant and expected to be seated in the restaurant (the front is a sports bar). We were shown a table in the bar. When we asked if we could be seated in the restaurant, we were told “we seat reservations in the bar as well as the restaurant”. When I asked how long for a table in the restaurant, we were told 20-30 minutes. There was a football playoff game and it was exceptionally loud as would be expected. We stayed but we should have left.
The Ribbon turned out to be a loud sports bar and frankly the food was mediocre. I’ve been there many times and will not return. If I wanted a sports bar, I would have gone to a sports bar. Very disappointing.
Pleasant experience for the following reasons:
food was tasty and well presented
reservation was honored
being seated promptly
getting to switch to a preferred seat
order taken in a timely manner
Food arriving in a reasonable time.
Access to clean bathroom
One of the most succulent burgers around! Good service, nice vintage decor, and rustic-ish ambiance with hard wood tables and benches. Had a nice chill Lunch with a friend. She ordered the White bean soup and was very tasty too. Prices are on AVG on UWS
This restaurant which is part of a group we really enjoy is just mediocre. The food was awful, salty and overpriced. The worst part of our evening was the awful and rude service. Would not recommend.
Drinks at the bar before our reservation - prompt service from bartender. Great variety on cocktail menu. Our drinks were great.
Dinner for two - service was friendly, attentive and provided great suggestions. Food was delicious. Large portions. We ordered too much. The sticky toffee pudding dessert was soooooo good.
I decided to give it a try, after a long week. The place was busy, I was able to get a sit by the bar.
I order the Fried Quinoa, was amazing, the server was super very nice and attentive, my friend ordered a Burger and was cooked they she want it.
Robert Downey Jr was there for lunch?
A mixture that will please some more than others. It's a cross between, on the one hand, an attempt (among several others) to provide a serious grown-up dining spot on the UWS and, on the other, a sports bar. Regarding the ambiance, the two don't coalesce very well. The food is also a mixed bag--steaks, chops, chicken competently but not excitingly executed.
If you are going to dine on Christmas day, don't go to The Ribbon UWS. They accepted a 7:00 PM reservation, and then at 8:00 PM the waiter came over to us and said "last call for drinks and dessert". They were throwing us out before we finished our meal. The waiter could not have been more rude. The restaurant should not open on Christmas day, if they are going to treat their patrons as if they were at a bar and it was 3:00 AM and time to close. Shame on them.
Christmas Eve so I did not expect more than a 2-1/2 Star experience. The facility is a dark, "sticky pub", with low ceilings, no offensive odors. Hostesses, wait staff, and bartender barely spoke english and incapable of accommodating anything other than "hello" and "this way please". The lights of the brightly lit kitchen pour into the main dining area. I know better and prefer not to see what is happening behind the scenes so I asked to be seated in the bar area. The staff did not understand the complaint or the request. We helped ourselves to seating at the bar and when the poorly trained bartender could not provide at least a 1-star level of service we decided not to stay for dinner. Our evening brought us to "The Mermaid Inn" on Amsterdam and where we had a fantastic meal. I would NOT recommend The Ribbon UWS to anyone and was surprised it has received the level of reviews shown here on OpenTable. Not likely I would even attempt to try again even though I never tried the food. Good luck to others, perhaps you will have a better outcome than me.
Christmas Eve with a baby in a high chair- we got a great seat near a window that allowed us to be comfortable and well-lit. Service was great from start to finish.Great experience as usual!
We had a great experience at The Ribbon - UWS. The service and food were both excellent. It was a little loud, but it 'tis the holiday season. Definitely worth a visit.
Nice experience, food was very good. The chef's salad is a little too big for your average human and doesn't seem like it would travel well for leftovers so best bet would to split that for a main. Place was filled to the gills on a Friday night, so noisy, but energetic, fun, New York noisy.
Service was excellent. I had the burger which was very good and the mashed potatoes were creamy and delicious. My daughter had the cod which was very tasty . The tables were pretty close together but the atmosphere was good.
Though I have been to The Ribbon many times before and loved my experiences, this time I was quite disappointed. I arrived 10 minutes after my reservation time because of delays related to the snow, and the hostess said that she didn’t see a reservation time for me. I told her what time my reservation was for and she said that after 15 minutes Open Table cancels reservations. I looked at my watch and was confused because it had only been 10 minutes.
Additionally, the service this night was terrible. The restaurant was empty, and it took us at least ten minutes to flag down a waiter just to take our order. As I mentioned, I have been to The Ribbon many times. I always order the cod dish, but I order it without breadcrumbs because I have a gluten allergy. The waiter rudely said that the dish just wouldn’t be good and told me to order something else off the menu. All the other times that I’ve ordered this dish, the waiters there have been really accommodating and the manager has even come out to ask about my food allergies. After our appetizers, my friend and I waited so incredibly long, and it took us a while to flag down our waiter again to ask about the status of our food. He seemed annoyed and said that they wait until guests are finished with their appetizers before starting their main courses. This seemed strange to me, and it wound up taking a really long time. Our waiter never came to check on us during our meal either. When I left the restaurant, I also got an email from OpenTable saying that they had heard from The Ribbon that I had skipped my reservation. After a night of bad service, I was really disappointed to hear that they had communicated that I had not shown up for my reservation. The Ribbon has good food and a good vibe, but it’s disappointing to have had an experience like this.
Just a fun place with good food. but , do wish they'd turn the music down.
Fun, good energy, great menu...excellent food.
Something for Everyone!
Good food and courteous service but not attentive enough. Too many tables per server and runners are not engaging. Noise too high to talk. Host and hostess staff snooty.
I booked a table at The Ribbon UWS on a rainy Friday. After a long week, my significant other and I were looking to enjoy a night out.
After we arrived, we waited behind a few other very nice couples to check in - all of us had 8:15PM reservations - only to overhear that it would be 20-30 minutes for their tables, and if they wanted to they could go stand at the similarly packed bar and purchase drinks. We were told the same thing. 20 minutes later when we still weren't seated (neither were any of them), I asked if there was a timing update (there wasn't) and told the host that we would just leave. No apology came fro the host, just an "okay".
I'm a nearby resident and I frequent The Ribbon UWS - however it's unlikely that I'll make the same mistake again.
The food was fantastic, service was good. Only complaint is we had to wait 20 mins although we had a reservation.
The food and mimosas were delicious and great friendly staff!
Excellent will be back. Server was a little pretentious but everything else perfect.
Bad experience. Have been here many times before but it was not good tonight. Rushed us through dinner. Inattentive staff. Food not as described. Shrimp scampi was awful. Left a bag by mistake. Returned two minutes later and it was nowhere to be found. Staff ambivalent and obnoxious gentleman at reception throughout the process. Not worth it. A waste of $300 for three people.
New to the Upper West side and have been wanting to check out this joint. Very pleasantly surprised. Service was perfect cocktails were perfect and the food was amazing my son wanted the ribs which I’m not a big fan of and I loved them, we also had the seafood platter that was some of the freshest most tastiest seafood I’ve had in the city. Will definitely be back
Lazy Sunday after thanksgiving brunch with the family was a great time. The food was really solid. Fried chicken was really good but wish it comes with something else other than honey on the side. Good think we ordered the spaetzle. Not sure if I’ve ever had spaetzle but the kids loved it. My wife’s prime rib dip was amazing. And their French fries are really really good.
Have to see what weekend dinners and crowd looks like.
I loved this restaurant. A bit of an UWS sleeper, it pleasantly surprised us in every way. You definitely should visit if you live near by or are visiting!
The Ribbon was enjoyed by four generations of our family. We were lucky to score a reservation on the Friday after Thanksgiving. The food, as always was great. They had a high chair for the newest family member. Service was friendly and helpful
A real neighborhood gem.
My family of four have been supporting our neighborhood for some time. Thanksgiving is always a busy time of year. That said, when we were seated, the staff who delivered our high chairs gave us plenty of attitude. Servers didn’t check up very much.
One silver lining was the busting staff were friendly.
There are many options on the uws, perhaps it’s time to support others.
Great thanksgiving experience! The food was delicious and great value for the price! The restaurant atmosphere was festive and cozy, perfect for a holiday meal
we had a problem at the midtown location some months ago and wrote a review here---management promptly responded with an apology and an offer to have drinks on the house the next time were there. I explained that we dine at the uptown location from time to time but probably would not get to midtown anytime soon---the response---no worries---just show this email to the uptown team the next time you're there and they will take care of you. And so they did---plus the manager sent over a comp dessert. She could not have been more professional or gracious. Now---do you think we're coming back again soon?? For sure---many thanks---that's what i call excellent service!
Fun place to eat. Has varied menu from burgers to fish and steak entrees.
Can bring your kids even though large active bar.
Service was very good.
We had great service by the best waiter in NYC!
Food was terrific, perfect for Sunday brunch. The fried chicken sandwich was terrific. Service was great, many great options on the menu, and comfortable ambiance. Only negative is it's fairly expensive for a relatively casual dining spot.
We are here several times a month! LOVE the grilled 🥑 avocado. It’s a simple and delicious party in your mouth! The ribs are delicious, and to corn bread that comes with them is a Star too. Ha ent had a bad salad yet, and don’t think I will! The rotisserie chicken soup is hearty enough as a meal on a cool night.
