The Pig & Tinder Box
While Tamworth is widely known as the capital of Australian country music, it’s not often celebrated for its restaurant scene. However, this venue has changed all that.
Housed within one of the town's most iconic heritage buildings is The Pig and Tinderbox. Owners Chris Cornforth and Fraser Haughton have struck gold with this innovative modern restaurant which is packed out most nights. These two are bringing a taste of Sydney’s small bar scene to the country, with quirky industrial decor and a menu that focuses on sharing. There is also an impressive drinks list with plenty of craft beers and cocktail jugs on offer.
The unusual name harks back to the old-school pubs of the past, but what Cornforth and Haughton have created is something that will be sticking around well into the future.

From the moment we walked into the restaurant to the moment we left we felt like the staff didn’t want us to be there. We were given no time at all to look at your drinks menu before the waitress with dark hair and pigtails demanded our order. Her face was miserable. To then receiving our food, it was thrown on the table. Half of the orders were given to the wrong person in which we had to organise since the waitresses couldn’t be arsed waiting on the person to acknowledge it was their meal. The happiest the staff were was when we asked for the bill. The ambiance in the restaurant was awful. It was extremely quiet, you could’ve cut through the atmosphere with a knife. We didn’t enjoy the experience at all. So much so we actually rushed out of the restaurant to go elsewhere for another drinks. I would not recommend it due to all of the above.
We had been very much looking forward to dining at The Pig & Tinder Box, but unfortunately everything was just a little off. The person who greeted us seemed incapable of smiling and while not outright rude, was pretty close to it - not a great start! We decided to go with the "Feed Me" menu, some of which was nice, but some definitely average. A large lump of very average camembert with some quite nice fig paste and flat bread definitely should not have been included - it just filled us up and wasn't very nice.
The arancini balls and korean chicken were the highlight - the portuguese chicken taco had no discernible peri-peri sauce and the roast pumpkin was rock hard and sent back. Then when it returned we were punished with the white bean hummus missing from the plate.
We wished they had included some of the lighter options such as the ceviche, dumplings or carpaccio as there was way too much food.
Not sure we'd ever bother going back or recommending to anyone else.
Food was exceptional, wait staff were terrific. Would definitely recommend and will return.
The pizza was delicious and the staff were very accommodating.
Brilliant service from the waiter that not only greeted us at the door, took our order, kepts our drinks topped up and generally made us feel extremely welcome. Amazing quality food just order enough to go around!
Food was amazing. Staff are a little odd. Drinks (cocktails) terrible
Food was delicious and the service was excellent.
Overall we were happy with the restaurant, however I booked online for an indoor setting and a romantic style setting as I was trying to arrange a surprise date for my wife. We arrived and were offered a table outside which we complained and were moved inside. but there was nothing romantically different to our table to any other. Its as if the booking was taken but nothing was read in my comments. Service was good but lacked. Food was amazing!
Excellent food, service and ambience ! Would definitely recommend !
Family all loved it especially the bao buns
We might've come on a bad day, as the reviews are generally good. The staff were a little stressed with one another, even though it wasn't busy but the waiter who served us was good-humoured. We came here instead of keeping a booking at the Glasshouse at Goonoo Goonoo Station (we were just in Tamworth for the weekend) and regretted our decision as soon as we were seated in the corner near the bathroom. Food was fine but the dining experience was lacklustre.
The menu is fairly limited which is usually a good sign and the food didn’t disappoint, I was very happy to find that they had a few options which were gluten free.
The service was attentive and professional.
Would definitely recommend.
Great share plates in a lovely old building. Wine prices were quite reasonable
Very hard to hear my husband as we had people to my left talking so loudly with each other. We moved over one but then a party came in. So the noise volume was awful. Otherwise it was good food and service.
Scott accommodated a late booking and then understanding of the fact we were running late on top of that. Drinks and food waiting on arrival. 10/10
Fantastic date nite in Tamworth! Best chips ever!!
because of weather we choose inside, it was a quiet Saturday afternoon. Up from Sydney having lunch with a local. Great food and environment.
Fantastic family lunch! I would highly recommend!!
A quick meal before a show.
Service quite good. Noise level high, especially music..would not be able to have a conversation at normal level.
Food Good, Value Good.
Minimal dinner options. Seem to have more options for lunch particularly for younger members (teenagers) of our party who are too old for a child menu.
Food was great, service was poor, rude to us and the people on the next table
The food was delicious and came soon after ordering. No salted rim on the margarita was disappointing though.
Disappointed as been before and it’s been lovely
Meat was dry in bao buns & dumplings tasted funny so a bad experience that day -staff not interested in feedback 🤷♀️
Service is the issue.....staff seemed overwhelmed....had to wait to pay behind people lined up to be seated....
For a Sunday the place was empty but still we had long waits for drinks and meals. The service was poor and things were left off the meal. It was my sons birthday lunch with friends and I was disappointed.
Great food, different menu than normal and nice out on the street in the cool of summer evening.
Delicious food, wonderful service and affordable price.
Will definitely be dining at the the Pig and Tinder box next time I’m in Tamworth
Lots of potential to be a great little pub, unfortunately the service ruined our experience. We were one of only a few seated tables, we placed our order straight away and after waiting over 30 minutes I approached the bar only to find out that our order had not even been placed. Unfortunately we didn't like the food, the chicken burgers we ordered tasted like a curry chicken burger with cheese, a very bizarre flavour combination. I ordered a cocktail wanting something refreshing and whilst it was ok, it would have been nice to have a little garnish as it just tasted like alcohol and mixer on ice, nothing more to it!
Food was delicious.
The only disappointment was being a Sunday and Valentines Day the table service was poor, staff didn't check on us to see if we wanted to order anything else so we had to go to bar several times to place extra orders and chase up orders.
Slow service. Wait staff just dumped food and drinks on the table without explain what was what. Lost orders. Pretty sure our cocktail didn’t have alcohol in it and had to be sent back. Infrequent drink rounds.
Whilst the overall experience was fine the forgot my daughter and my food order and we only received it once the rest of the party was ready to go home. I didn’t complain but it was very poor service. They shouldn’t have charged us for these meals. My daughter is only 10 years old and she was absolutely ravenous by the end
Lovely as always. Great wine, pizza, and company!
Enjoy the food service was excellent however the music was a little loud for conversation at the table
The food was delicious and the service was great. All the recommendations were spot on.
Fantastic experience. Food, service, drinks, prices... Loved it all! We will definitely be back the next time we're visiting Tamworth!
Great service and food made this a memorable night in Tamworth. Sat on verandah outside which was nice for a warm summer evening
Called in while in Tamworth with 2 kids and had a very satisfying meal. The kids had a burger and Bolognese and were happy while we treated ours to the Feed Me menu as I decided. A very good selection of full fulfilling foods came out. The Wagu beef was exceptionally good.
We had the nicest dinner out as a family! Thank you for the $5 kids meal options- it makes for a wonderful night out at an affordable price.
Book a table for indoor then was told must sit outside it was noisey and not a private dinner date for my self and my husband we will not be coming back after the service we reserved on this visit we have been toPig and Tinder on a number of times and will not be spending any more money at the establishment.
We did the ‘chef feed me’ menu which was great. Great cocktails!
