American
The Moldy Fig is a family run restaurant bar in Brunswick bringing New Orlean's Style to Melbourne. Focusing on classic Southern American home cooking plated to share for that real southern spread paired with classic cocktails, local wines and Louisiana beer. The cuisine of New Orleans originated as a fusion of French, Spanish and Italian with influences from Native American Indians and spices from people of colour from Africa and the Caribbean creating flavours unique to anywhere else in the world. Located in the heart of the Brunswick East dining district its impossible to miss the large mural, that makes up the side wall of The Moldy Fig, of smoking saxophonist Dexter Gordon. With live music every night of the week, featuring various styles of jazz and blues, its never a dull night at The Moldy Fig.

Tasty food, excellent service and great music. You really could not ask for any more on a Saturday night. We will definitely be returning with friends.

The food was fantastic. I was concerned the live music may be too loud due to the size of the room, but it wasn't. The live jazz was at the perfect level to still enjoy the meal and conversation with my partner. Definitely will be back.

This is a small but wonderful place to get together. Though the music was way too loud for the small space we were in we still enjoyed ourselves. The service was second to none and the food was pretty good too. Having spent a lot o f time in New Orleans the cuisine was somewhat close to traditional with but with a modern twist. Try the elderflower fizz cocktail!!!!!

Meals where fresh and came out quite quickly. Very tasteful and good portions. Live music was good but sometimes just abit too loud that you found yourself yelling at your partner.
Otherwise really good experience and food.

Drove from Ballarat to sample what The Moldy Fig had to offer and we were not disappointed, fast and friendly service and delicious food and great recommendations from staff on popular menu favourites.

We ended up getting a banquet which gave us a sample of the flavours on offer, we tried about 6 dishes for $30 each which is just fantastic and we didn’t leave hungry that’s for sure.

We will be back soon!

Super cool vibe with exceptional live music and friendly staff. Really interesting menu, the vege Jambalaya was to die for and I can't wait to get back to try more dishes! Lots of gluten free and vegan options too. $10 cocktails for happy hour is just the icing on the cake. Definitely try the Cajun Lemonade - its like a spicy pimms cup!

Easily the best Creole cuisine we've had in Melbourne! Also the Kahlua triple cream brie dessert is to die for, the Abita Amber on tap is great and the atmosphere is excellent.

Pretty disappointed with our whole evening. We ordered one of the Banquet menus for the table, and the all dishes were under-seasoned, lacking flavour and the portions were strange. 6 wings to share between 4 people, Vege dishes larger than mains. They had alot of gluten free options though.
The Jazz musician was playing extremely loudly for a crowd of 3 tables, the music was so loud we had to ask them to turn it down as we couldn't hold a conversation over the music- a bit extreme for a dinner venue early on a Saturday night. The service was okay, we had to ask for drinks and water a few times even though the restaurant wasn't crowded.
I wouldn't recommend dining here, it left us with a poor view of New Orleans cuisine.

We had a great night at The Moldy Fig. The food was outstanding with the New Orleans theme. We thought the $30 banquet was good value and really enjoyed the Gumbo and Jambalaya. The live jazz music was good but a bit loud for conversation.

Disappointing.
1) Cornbread =excellent;
2) Gumbo = average;
3) Jambalaya = stodgy. lacking flavour and balance;
4) Ribs = tough. poorly re-heated;
5) Margarita = ordinary. lacking flavour & balance
6) Service = genuine. Dishes came out too fast though.
7) Ambience = Limited. live music very background.

This is to Cajun food what Taco Bills is to Mexican.

Food was very tasty and different with a casual and welcoming atmosphere, making a great dining experience on a visit to Melbourne. Nice to have music to listen to. Remember it's at the Brunswick end of Lygon Street!
