Such a disappointment. Arrived for our 1:30 booking and ordered drinks and starters. At 2:15pm we asked to order our main course. We were told the kitchen had closed! 45 mins after our arrival.
The starters we ordered were greasy and uninspiring. Avoid
Food was exceptional, service needs to be more personal, its very loud especially if you are a group of 4 on the round table like we were,made it very hard to here.
On arrival we were taken to what looked liked placed tables in the doorway outside the main restaurant dining area.
We had made a booking, however the arrogance and dismissive attitude of the manager 'KEVIN' commented this was all he had quite rudely and abruptly.
My partner and I decided to leave the establishment due to poor service delivery and feeling quite dismissed by Kevin's attitude.
I feel that if you are paying for a dining experience then it should be honored in that manner.
We left unfortunately and sought another destination to indulge in food and service for our Saturday night dining experience.
I urge others to possibly confirm that they will be in the dining area when making a booking
UNBELIEVABLY NOISY PLACE!
Sadly we cannot comment on anything beyond the ambience, so unappealing that within about 5mins of our arrival and shortly after being seated at our table we have decided to leave… The dining room was extremely and unpleasantly noisy, with the noise level quite likely bordering on unhealthy, definitely totally unacceptable in a quality upmarket restaurant.
I have no idea why this was so: perhaps the room was overcrowded with noisy dinners, or simply the designer of the venue has not implemented any noise suppression techniques (rather bare walls and floor, combined with minimalistic décor turned the room into an echo-chamber), but the result definitely put us off for good, despite the fact that we were really looking forward to the night out @ Grand Orient.
We will not be coming back any time soon, especially that after leaving in rather desperate moods (8pm and no alternative booking on what was a reasonably busy Saturday eve in a rather devoid of restaurants part of town) we have actually managed to find an unexpectedly nice alternative down the road in a form of a relatively small restaurant called “ASCUA”. Totally different style of food and clime of course, but cosy, welcoming and exactly what a good doctor ordered after the Grand Oriental fiasco… So Oriental it maybe was, but for us for a time being it was anything but Grand…
I have dined here twice with my family and both times have been 10/10.
Fresh ingredients which are perfectly cooked meals, outstanding service from waiters / waitresses & restaurant managers, a comprehensive beverage list, and the overall vibe and atmosphere of the hotel restaurant design / interior / decor is spot on.

I went to the Grand Orient with my wife and daughter for lunch prior to the ballet. We had the two lunch meals which were reasonably priced and very tasty. The service was faultless and wine list has some very nice choices. I would recommend for a nice lunch any time.
This was our first visit to the restaurant but it wont be the last because the food, service and ambience all exceeded our expectations
Disappointing lack of flexibility with the set menu options. They are for 4 or 6 and we had 8. Great food and service though.
Great venue but unfortunately the night was totally a let down clearly by an unorganized kitchen & confused waiting staff ! A 45 minute wait for our entree was way too long !
This followed by an even longer wait for our mains which came out at different intervals with our rice being the last so subsequently our other mains were cold by the time we got the rice.
The couple on the next table had similar issues and were not happy !
I provided our feedback to the manager who acknowledged this and said very sorry we have only 2 woks ??? Sorry not my problem ! If I was the manager in a new Restaurant I would have addressed this complaint/feedback not with a feeble excuse such as the above but at very least an offer of adjustment in the bill or even at very least a free drink.
Too much competition out there guys to allow dissatisfied clientele to walk out the door.
Very nice food and happy that the maître d recognised our long wait for main course with a free bottle of the wine we were drinking
Simply outstanding. The scallops for entre, words cannot describe. Easily the best I have ever had. Almond Chicken to die for and everything just awesome!!! Must go.

Grand Orient, the newly opened Chinese Restaurant at the Melbourne Hotel.
We arrived promptly prior to opening and had difficulty locating the front entrance. Down a narrow corridor, it was neither well signposted nor particularly inviting despite the restaurant itself being in full view. Thus although arriving early, we didn't end up opening the door till late.
And the restaurant was near empty. During prime-time Saturday lunch.
We were shown our table and service seemed amicable enough. There was a very limited dimsum menu or steamed dumplings and a few fried plates. The rest of the menu was ala-carte and inappropriate for a small group fo two people.
Dimsum quality was high for some dishes and variable for others. Crystal dumplings were silky smooth, although too sticky. The skin sticking to the side of the bamboo basket. Chopped mixed chinese mushrooms were satisfactory and one of our favourite dumplings. Shanghai Dumplings had a generous pork filling but the stock and dumpling pastry were neither memorable nor extraordinary. Scallop dumplings were delicious. Why serves of three? It's very irritating when you're in a party of two! And an obvious cost saver. Fried squid were terrible. A thick, heavy batter reminiscent of bad fish and chips, insufficient salt/chilli seasoning and somewhat rubbery and inconsistent cooked oily squid.
For the price. We don't think we'll come back. What this restaurant needs to recognise is that foodies will either go "for the food" and if neither food nor price is good, there are dozens of other dim sum places around town. Which is why they're busy on a Saturday lunch ... and this place had perhaps two covers the entire meal.
Everyone else seemed to be lining up for ramen outside.

We went to Grand Orient mainly to see the refurbishment of the Melbourne Hotel. The dining room was absolutely stunning. Decor was impeccable and creative however our group did not feel the food was in line with this. Certain dishes were a little bland, spring rolls were disappointing however sweet and sour pork with lychees a real winner. Their meat tray wasn’t all that tender and tasty, however their crispy chicken with Chinese salt was yummy. The service was amazing and highly attentive. This is a case where I would return because it may have been a simple case of the chef work not being up to scratch on that night.
we went there for yum cha but the yum cha selection was very limited. However, the food quality was good. Will go back for lunch or dinner next time to try the main food menu. The ambience was good for us to catch up and chat.
The service was efficient, friendly and knowledgeable. The room wasn't full, but could have done with more staff, as they had to race around to service patrons. They did well enough, but the experience may have been more intimate and relaxed if more staff.
The manager was amazing seeming to be everywhere taking orders, greeting patrons, advising on menu and wine, but if he had more staff he would have had more time to focus on patrons.
The beverage list is extensive, interesting and with plenty of variety with local wine growers and key regions interstate and overseas. There is also an excellent 'cellar list', with some exclusive and older vintages.
The Peking Duck was perfectly cooked, sliced and served with flair and limited fuss. The skin is the key to a great dish. It's really what it's all about. It was perfect. Crisp and flavoursome, and importantly, the pancakes light and not too doughy.
The duck meat was served separately as San Choy Bow, and delicious. So too was the pan fried toothfish - fluffy, white and textured – complimented by braised bean curd in a clay pot and
Kai Lan with ginger sauce. My pick of deserts was the mung bean pastries that looked like plump little witetchy grubs, but delicious.
Overall the food and service were very good. It's a new restaurant so they are obviously sorting things out, having just opened, and because of that falls just short of 5-star. So be patient because it can only get better. I’ll be back!
Small dim sum menu but food quality was delivered! Reasonably priced and absolutely love the ambience and interior. Hoping to see new items added to the lunch yum cha menu soon
Staff provided excellent service. Always keep an eye on customer’s need.
We where first to arrive and seated at table closest to the restaurant entrance, where every guest will walks past you to get to their tables. My guest booked on the day and I had booked a table earlier in the week, so we doubled up our reservation. I asked the manager to move us to another table. He said the restaurant was fully booked. Understandably my guest had booked on the day, so would’ve been expected to be given the last available table. Yet, I had booked early in the week, therefore I should’ve been seated at a better table. After some sighing by the manager, we were moved. My initial impression was, I though Perth would finally get a Chinese restaurant of international quality. Portion sizes of Chinese roast pork is so small (see image) for the price. Cod fillet with shallots, lacked Wok Hei, (Essence of hot wok to cook a dish through while maintaining all the freshnes of a dish) shallots was under done, skin of the cod should’ve been removed from the fillet. I suspect there is a distance to walk from kitchen to the dining room as the dishes didn’t seem hot. My beans in XO sauce, lacked any discernible XO sauce flavour except that of chilli. It would’ve be good if the restaurant poured their wine by the glass offering at the table instead of at the bar. I know it’s a new opening, yet I didn’t get a sense of satisfaction with any of the dishes or the service. What grates me is when the manager asked how things where, yet didn’t wait long enough for a response. There didn’t seem to be enough floor staff. It took to long for the bill to arrive. The restaurant needs a receptionist. I want Grand Orient to succeed, yet on first impressions I left unsatisfied. I do hope they can re-deem themselves.
found it unusual that the waiter kept putting the food bill on the table before we ate.
the food was ok except for the soft shell crab which dished up as just a lump of batter.
