We’re steps away from Bryant Park, Times Square and the Theater District, making us the perfect pit-stop for a pre-theater bite (or post-theater), lunch meeting, after work drinks and more.
Very good! Great option for business or casual lunch.
We have found the Independent to be the perfect Happy Hour, Pre-play dinner, and post-play food and drinks. The beautiful woodwork and photos create a terrific atmosphere. Last year we went there three times in a seven day period and this year twice in a four day visit. There are lots of choices in NYC, but this is our favorite. The food was amazing along with terrific service. Last Tuesday we did not realize we should have made a reservation, but they managed to find us a table for our pre-play dinner. We will return next year.
We were looking for a quick spot to grab a bite and drink between two shows on Broadway. Couldn’t have picked a better place! The ambiance was wonderful and we got a table right by the window. We enjoyed the craft cocktails and music. Our dinner was delicious...definitely try the brussel sprouts. This was a fancy bar with a great atmosphere, perfect distance to the theaters. You won’t be disappointed!
Convenient spot in Times Square area, good for meeting a friend for lunch. Food was not memorable, although I would recommend the deviled eggs.
Waited over 45 minutes for lunch. All the guests were very angry. The food is excellent but they need to get their act together
Worst experience in a long time. Waited 90 mins for food during normal lunch hour. Missed meetings. Waitress lied to us all along saying food was coming right out. Many other customers were complaining and walking out. If the restaurant is having issues, they should be honest with their customers. This situation was totally mismanaged. This was a reliable place at one point. I will not return.
I had a quick dinner at the Independent, and everything was terrific. I had the Brussels sprouts, the salmon and the red velvet cake. Each dish was delicious and the portions were quite generous. The service was great and the place has a really nice atmosphere. A very good choice if you're in or near Times Square / Bryant Park.
the quality of the food, was more than expected in a bar setting.
The Hanger Steak was particularly good, and tender.
The brussel sprouts could have been a bit carmelized (personal preference perhaps), but otherwise the three starters and three mains, were all very much enjoyed.
Service was slow. Never got my second iced tea, and we had to take our check to the cashier. May have been short staffed.
Food was good, service was a bit spotty - didn't seem like they had enough staff.
Excellent food. We shared several appetizers and a truffle/mushroom flatbread pizza. Delicious. Small restaurant so reservations are a must. Acoustics are bad and table next to us was so loud that it was difficult to hold a conversation. Do try the crisp deviled eggs!
This is a great place to go if you're staying near Times Square. We went here after a Broadway show and the craft cocktails were so good, and they have an evening happy hour. Our bartender was very personable. Definitely felt like we got to experience a local spot.
Terrible experience at the Independent today. Went there for a quick business lunch and after 90 minutes we left with our food to go. The restaurant wasn’t crowded when we got there but filled up fast. They seemed ill prepared for a lunch time crowd in Times Square as we had to get the server’s attention in order to place our order. Simple sandwiches for a party of three. After sitting an hour we still hadn’t gotten our food. When we asked the server she told us there was one table ahead of us so it would be soon.
After four other tables were served we asked again and were told it was on its way out. Still no food and by then two other tables had left without eating. If she was honest with us we would have left after an hour instead of wasting valuable time. Not sure if it was a bad day for the restaurant but this will be my last time there and certainly would never recommend. The server was way over her head and no one managing the place to help out.
Truly enjoyed our experience. Staff was short but waitress doing hostessing and tables was excellent!!! Drinks and food FABULOUS!!! Only minutes to theaters!!!
Service and cocktails great. The Signature chicken sandwich was a bit greasy and lacked seasoning, very disappointed: Burrata toast was excellent.
This is a really cool place. Great drinks! Food for the most part is very good just avoid the calamari-too chewy.
Too loud and do Dar right across from table speakers above our table he knew it was loud and made no effort to turn it down
We chose The Independent for dinner after our regional conference. We had a reservation for 12ppl, although it was packed upon arrival, the hostess sat us immediately at our reserved tables. The ambiance was great, swanky decor everyone loved it. Water was available on our tables upon arrival (glass bottles) to pour if we'd like. We ordered drinks and a bunch of sharables, most notable were the fried deviled eggs, guacamole, brussel sprouts and the flatbreads. The wait staff was attentive and always got everything we ordered correct (maybe 2x I was looking for her, but that's out of about 7 times we ordered) I'd say she/they all did an excellent job in making our experience a great one! Thank you
They need a legit happy hour. I understand they are in TImeSquare but they could pull some locals in for theater bites. The deviled eggs were AMAZING. The cocktail menu tasted great but it’s just hard to go out and have multiple drinks at $15 a pop. Maybe I just can’t afford it but the location and setting didn’t really do that for me. Brussel sprouts were great as well.
On a Thursday evening at 6, this is NOT a restaurant; it’s a very loud bar: Good for drinking, bad for dinner and conversation. Food is good.
Busy happy hour crowd but chills out after, we have a table of 8 and we’re super comfortable. Share plate portions are quite small but very tasty
Was excited by the positive reviews, but our experience was meh at best. On arrival, we stood at the host stand at the entrance for 10 minutes before someone told us that the real people were halfway back in the restaurant. We were seated promptly then. Pretty cool, very NYC vibe. Beer was good. We had the meatballs and the buratta toast. The former was tasty but very salty, the latter was the best part of the meal.
I had the short rib ragu, which was pretty good but again very salty. My wife had a bowl with kale, apple, brussel sprouts and some other items. Very little flavor. No one came by to see if we were happy with our meals until we were done. When we expressed our less than enthusiastic reaction, we got a shrug, but nothing else. We had no chance to raise our concerns earlier, or we would have, but no one even walked by.
All in all, not worth the price or the calories.
Oh, and to top it off, the restaurant claimed we failed to show for our Open Table reservation, when we (alas) did show up.
Went for a quick bite before the theater. Service was quick and appetizers plentiful.
Absolutely fantastic! We stopped in with a group of 3 and were so impressed with everything about this restaurant. Classy, 1930's style decor but still casual enough to feel cozy and fun. The service was phenomenal and our waiter gave us great suggestions. The food was delicious and exactly what we wanted - yummy deviled eggs, short rib, fried cauliflower bites in a cute popcorn bag, and THE DRINKS! Seriously these are some of the best bourbon and gin cocktails I've had in NYC. Do yourself a favor and go have a lovely, delicious dinner with some very nice folks.
Crispy chicken burger is amazing! Cocktails are also very well balanced as cocktails should be!
Great place and our bartender Cassie was terrific. Highly recommend it.
Food was OK, but the service was entirely lacking. One poor woman over worked on too many tables. Not her fault, but drinks never came out. Had to wave arms just to place order. Lots of kinks to work out.
Great update to the old "Jack's" location...1st time there, will definitely be back!
Good time!! Really liked the drink options too. Good value!
The atmosphere was just what I was looking for in a NYC restaurant. And the food......it was outstanding. Service was attentive, Andy he cheesecake closed the deal. We had a terrific time and would totally come to this restaurant again.
Just happen to drop in to The Independent and was happy to see the cleanliness of the restaurant and the great staff. I will be dropping by again.
Our host, Jamie was great! Very friendly, great menu knowledge and knows how to mix an amazing Preacher Man cocktail. If I lived in the area, I would be back!
The food was healthy and very good. Not ordinary pub fare. The waitperson was lovely. The only issue is it took almost 45 minutes for the food - two salads - to arrive. And it was lunchtime midweek. Good place provided you have time to spare. Not so good for lunch hour.
Good location near Times Square, small plates good for sharing. Nice drink selection but place is very load if you wanna have conversations.
Great food and great service. What else do you need? I recommend this fine restaurant to all
I love this place! Deviled Eggs are a MUST. Perfect pre-or post-show place for drinks and food. Everyone is friendly and the drink and food selection are a joy.
This is more of a bar than a restaurant. There are very few entrées, mostly small plates. It is not cheap. The service was good. But it is dark and tavern like on the inside. If that’s what you’re looking for, then this is it.
The City experienced a major power outage while we were dining. Our server apologized for the lack of music (blown system) and then proceeded to keep us updated with any news. She could not have been any friendlier, even when they got slammed with customers (lots of places had no power). Three of us shared halloumi fries, Brussels sprouts (so fresh tasting!), crispy deviled eggs, burrata with tomato toast (what I want to eat everyday for the rest of my life) and the duck meatballs. None of us were very hungry when we walked in, but we licked the plates clean. Seriously underrated.
I’ve been recommending The Independent all around town—second time there in two weeks! What a great place to be welcomed into just off of the hustle and bustle of the Theater District. Anna and Andrew could not have been more lovely! Great people make a great restaurant...go...enjoy...
The salads were full of wonderful ingredients. The staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. It is definitely on our list for a return visit.
