Quintessential New England dining experience in picturesque downtown Essex, CT. Great food, great atmosphere with friendly and polite service. Good variety on menu including healthy options (seared salmon) and good old fashioned comfort food that goes perfect with the cozy historic atmosphere. Great shops and boutiques within walking distance to enjoy a stroll before or after your meal. Great for all occasions.
Our family's dinner at the Griswold Inn was lovely. The waitress could not have been nicer and the food was all absolutely delicious. I highly recommend the Griswold Inn.
Cozy atmosphere with assortment of comfort foods as well as fresh salads and seafood.
We had a great lunch, on a cold day, with the fireplaces going. The food was delicious and the service was great.
Lovely, as always. Felt very comfortable - everyone wore masks, table were distanced. The food was done very well!
As always, our experience at The Griswold Inn was spectacular.
Hadn't been to the indoor seating at The Gris for years but after enjoying some outdoor dining over the summer decided to give it a try again. Food was much better and reasonable and will go again. Would have preferred to sit in the Library and will ask for that the next visit.
I came in with a few friends to show them a quintessential New England inn. Despite our server who seemed to be annoyed and disinterested in us we had a delicious meal, enjoyed the ambiance, and had lovely conversations with a neighboring table!
A charming restaurant with historical elements. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. Essex is a beautiful village. We were extremely happy with our meal and service.
Food and service are always excellent. This time was no exception.
What an awesome meal. Butternut squash ravioli and porchetta. An amazing experience
Big fan of The Griswold Inn but did not enjoy my meal choice (some type of chicken dish) and the fact that no rolls are being given. I love the atmosphere but will think hard before returning.
The Griswold Inn has always been a great experience whenever we have gone. Historic charm, great food, and friendly staff that make it a memorable experience!
We go every year to see the fall leaves and have lunch at the Griswold Inn. I was a bit worried about the experience given COVID, but it was wonderful and no impact at all. Food was delicious, service was good and the ambiance was wonderful. I highly recommend a visit if you want to dine in a charming, historic Inn.
The ambiance was great as well as the food and service.
Rather disappointing. The Duck Confit hardly had any Duck. Had to literally “fish” for pieces.
Overall experience rather poor considering all the recommendations we had got.
Hostess was rude and ungracious when I asked for an outdoor table (which I had already noted in my rez). Told us there were none when in fact four tables cleared out shortly after we sat down (we did get seated in the end). Entrees were both overly sweet. No bread while we waited. Wine pour was generous. Patio setting lovely.
Lovely place and atmosphere. The potato pancakes was a very substantial appetizer and delicious. My husband's fish and chips was more than ample and yummy. My salmon was outstanding, though the size of the fish was smaller than I would have expected for $30.
The sticky pudding with butterscotch sauce was a wonderful finish to our meal.
Everything was superb! Great meal, great place
It was wonderful to eat in a location that has been a part of our nations history for over 200 years.
We have been going to the Gris for over 35 years. We haven’t done much since COVID 19 so we decided to take a drive . It was well worth the trip. The food was excellent. Will go back.
This place is full of history and nostalgia. The food is mediocre at best. Very friendly staff.
Professional and courteous wait staff. Ambiance is second to none for classic New England charm. Our meals were all perfectly prepared. Looking forward to returning soon.
Drinks were great! The food is always good! This Was our second visit. We will definitely be back!
I have been going here ever since it re-opened. It is always excellent.
My husband and I had a lovely meal at the Gris! Food was delicious...we both ordered the Macro plate. The meat was incredibly tender and truffle fries were thin, crispy and loaded with flavor!
I look forward to all restaurants getting back to normal! More fun and pleasant to have diners filling up the room!
A true New England masterpiece, the Griswold Inn was a part of my childhood that I got to revisit. The food was exquisite, I had the salmon and my husband had beef. My rice was a bit mundane but, who eats rice when you have salmon. The decor hasn't changed since my birthday dinners as a child in the '60s. The antique muskets behind glass, the paintings of Clipper Ships, the shelves of old and musty books. It all blends together to make a comforting, warm and truly colonial experience.
A great place to settle in for a nice relaxing dinner. Great food and service in a comfortable historic setting. I love the location in Essex. Go early and browse the shops and walk down to the water.
Room seemed huge with so few tables....just the right ambience...great food...great service!
Great night out! We were seated in a quiet room with a fireplace. We had a wonderful meal, good drinks and really good service.
Thank you Griswold Inn.!
Excellent dinner... a bit pricey
Always love the Griz! Will try to make it more often .... from Branford CT. My mom and dad have been coming here for years dancing around the place on Sunday nights with banjo player singing "When the Saints Come Marching In". Many many years ago
Jazz brunch hors de série.
This place was EPIC !!! Standing Piano performances were a nice touch and added to the already historic charm. Lots of friendly patrons and the drinks and eats were fairly priced. Also had a majestic fireplace.
We had a fine time and enjoyed food. Server could have been more attentive.
Kind of a tourist trap if I am being honest. Food was mediocre at best. Limited choice, bad attitude by staff, dessert was a choice of cookies. Better brunch options elsewhere.
Took my wife for Valentine’s Day and the food was amazing. The staff was extremely helpful and kind.
Wonderful food staff and atmosphere
Fantastic dinner and service on Valentines Day! Excellent food and ambiance. Highly recommended!
Excellent! Special occasion Valentine's Day dinner with my bride of 50 years. Food was outstanding (best beef short ribs I've ever had...highly recommend). Service was excellent. Friendly, attentive but not overbearing. Rustic, warm atmosphere. Great experience overall.
