The European
The European takes the best from Old World Europe and serves them using produce from Australia and Europe. It is open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A set menu is available along with the more traditional menus. The warm wooden tones of the interior set the mood for an old world meal. Come with a partner or a group of friends for dinner and enjoy selections such as the freshly shucked oysters in a red wine shallot vinegar or the Yasa caviar selection. Dine on suckling pig served with black pudding and apple or the rabbit cassoulet. The European boasts a versatile wine list that focuses on European wines that span the continent from Italy to Spain. All bottles listed on the menu are also available for sale to take home with you.
The European has several venues that it offers for private events and parties.
Private Dining
Our award winning menu designed by our executive Chef Ian Curley, accommodates serious boardroom dinners, as well as beautiful long family lunches. An extensive wine list and welcoming, savvy staff make hosting an event with us effortless.
View Private Dining DetailsVery enjoyable all round. Food good. Service very friendly and attentive.
Apart from being a bit noisy, everything else about the occasion was excellent. The service was attentive, the food divine, the wine well matched and the ambience cozy.
The food was excellent as was the service. Wait staff are very efficient and knowledgable. The wine list was on the expensive side. A good bottle of wine does not have to be so expensive. A few more options under $100 would be pleasing to see.
A great location, terrific service. Food for breakfast good.
The ultimate gathering place over food and beverages in Melbourne.
We keep coming back to the European for it excellent food, great atmosphere and friendly staff.
That sums it up nicely.
Always delightful dining, the standout this time was the blinis with whipped cod's row.
Gorgeous food serviceand atmosphere! disappointing to have to leave table after 2 hours but at least it was lovely sitting upstairs for drinks afterwards.
The Chateaubriand was outstanding. The food and service were so good we went back the next night and had Tornedos which was equally outstanding.
The staff were very professional and attentive. Our waiter was excellent. And the sommelier was fantastic! Made excellent and interesting recommendations, and when he could see that we were up for a joke, he was hilarious. What a character. We had a wonderful evening all round. Love it even more here now.
Great experience but feel it is overpriced
Classy, modern service, really amazing seasonal food.
There were 5 of us! All 5 meals were great. The three children said the food was better than mine. Now that is saying something
The three cheese omelette is superlative as is the the space and the people. Thank-you
The European is 'our' restaurant, we come here for special occasions and adore the food and ambience over everything. We've tried a lot of restuarants in Melbourne but always gravitate back to this quaint little eatery. Keep doing what you're doing, love it!
While visiting Melbourne to see Come from Away
Great food and fast, friendly service. Meals a bit pricey but delicious - desserts wow!
Some of the most lovely service - warm, friendly and genuine. Great food and beverage
I loved the relaxed feel of the place & the staff were fantastic
Close to the Princess theatre! European charm and excellent service!!
Getting too expensive, surcharge we a bit rich considering I paid $16 for scrambled eggs and $20 for a Bloody Mary. Not great people. No much to catering for vegetarians...
Always great service and food without the pretension of many lesser Melbourne restaurants. Superb wine list
Delicious food. Fabulous staff
We had a marvellous time at the a Europen but we felt like they were rushing us a bit and also there was a stressful mishap with our booking being listed multiple times .
However the staff were lovely and the food was great. It’s a charming restaurant.
Always a great place for a feed with friends. Excellent menu choice to cover most bases
A step back in time from the modern cafes and bistros. Very European to the point of having somewhere to hang your overcoat. We enjoyed the different aspect of it.
Have been to The European Restaurant a few times and it never disappoint. Lovely food and very good service
Not inexpensive but good food well presented. Friendly and informative waiters. Handy location.
Always love dining with your fabulous team , consistently outstanding yet relaxed service & attitude .
Our favourite restaurant in Melbourne. Service and ambience great. The wine selection is wonderful.
Chose this restaurant for Sunday lunch due to its proximity to both St Patrick's Cathedral and Princess Theater as two of our companions were catching a show. It was perfect for the location, the food, service and overall experience. The boys in our party all loved their steaks. We also enjoyed the potted shrimps which we had for starters. The only thing keeping me from rating it excellent (instead of just very good) is that I ordered a bellini, but what I got just tasted like plain orange juice - seems like they forgot the bubbly!
This place never fails to deliver. The crab linguine just continues to be amazing.
I loved everything about this place. The food was exceptional. The service was outstanding. And the ambience was perfect. We wil be back for sure.
We had a beautiful meal here as a family of 5 for my daughter's 14th birthday. Food was as always, fabulous. With a good variety to choose from including exciting specials on offer to compliment the regularly changing menu. Service was attentive but not intrusive. As it was a particularly warm night it was nice to find the restaurant warm and inviting. Always a pleasure to dine here.
Great friendly waiter service and knowledge.
Food and wine exceptional.
Second time, however I felt that seating opposite the kitchen/waiters station was far too loud and disruptive.
Food was good and service was good
One of my favourites, and the perfect place to spend my 30th birthday dinner.
Silver service with flair, a killer wine list and sensational cuisine make this restaurant a shining star in the Melbourne dining scene.
All aspects of the experience are consistent, detail-oriented and personalised. You are guaranteed a delicious and enjoyable meal.
Table service was excellent, good knowledge of menus and very efficient throughout the night!
Love The European. The cheapest trip to a classic European eatery without the gruelling flights!
A must go to restaurant in Melbourne...breakfast, lunch or dinner.
After trying a few fine dining venues around Melbourne over the last 15 years we came to the conclusion the European is one of the best. Great service without the pretentious and smug found elsewhere, the food is consistently great, ingredients generally are locally sourced, curated by the chef for top quality, a well rounded wine menu, I never felt overwhelmed with options and the ones on offer are all great.
