Family lunch at the Espy Kitchen was a bit disappointing. The service was average. The Food was below avaerge. My pizza came out before the entrees. My wife’s fish came out after we had all finished our meals. Just not professional enough for the price and the venue.
We had the best time. Made to feel very welcome by staff. The Sunday roast delicious. We had a 12.30 booking and as the restaurant filled up so naturally the noise level increased I asked the waiter if he could turn down the background music which he did and offered us a quiet area to have our coffee. How thoughtful and fantastic keep up the great work you have my big tick of approval
Although it’s of decent quality the food is overpriced, our wagyu steaks were very average quality and cooked inconsistently even though we ordered as recommended, fish and chip serve was tiny for an adult, burger was ok, the pizzas were nice and so were the cocktails. Friendly service staff. As a group we didn’t feel like we got good value for money having spent well over $100 each
I really enjoyed it! Food was good and then we were kindly escorted to The Ghost bar for cocktails after our meal.
Beautiful food, chefs table with view of the busy and very professionally run kitchen. Lovely staff. And the cocktails were sooo bloody good!! 10/10
Service was excellent food well prepared and very tasty - Creme Brûlée was amazing
We ate the Wagyu and roasted vegetables. the meat was poorly cooked and was almost inedible. the vegies weren't cooked properly. so hungry afterwards we got a pizza from Topolinos!
Great, fun venue. Food was exceptionally quick. Service was excellent.
Excellent causal dining with good atmosphere
Highly recommended pub food
In general, was a great time, we just had a really loud, big group next to us so found it hard to hear each other
It wasn't possible to reserve a table at the time that me and my friends would like to have a lunch. And also not table available for booking for a number of people that we would like. Some of my friends had decided to meet just ate bar because of that. But when we arrive at the restaurant there were many tables available and it wasn't so busy as I was expecting.
We enjoyed the food in The Kitchen our was great, then moved into the bar area most of the staff were lovely then one staff member was very rude and made me feel very uncomfortable, they might have been having bad day but it was not called for,. Overall we enjoyed ourselves.
We are huge fans of the Espy Kitchen & would love to go more often.
Access to and from the restaurant via a very crowded bar is not ideal. It took us around 5mins to exit after dinner! :)
Also, at around 8/8:15pm we wanted to order more drinks and food but we’re told by the waitress our table was booked and we had to leave. This is the 2nd time this has happened to us at the Espy Kitchen & we wonder if people are wanting to stay and pay more, why can’t another table be assigned to the later guests or at least offer us an alternative space to continue our night. The staff are lovely, but this issue could have better process and flexibility around it so that guests feel welcomed.
Thanks again for your hospitality.
Friendly staff. Good food and service. Music was a bit too loud. My dinner date and I couldn’t hear each other.
Our group loved our lunch at the Espy kitchen. The food, atmosphere was all spot on the and the staff were stand outs.
Thanks so much.
The dining experience was not very memorable. My Date and I ordered Sword Fish and the portion was very small, and not very Hot.
We wanted to order a side of Root vegetables, - just sweet Potato - and was told I couldn't just have that. - That is unacceptable.
Also, there were NO Green vegetables (such as Peas etc) available at all and the Cauliflower that we ordered was not appealing.
In all, not much to recommend.
Loved the food and the atmosphere, I’m definitely going back for the Sunday roast
Nice to have a quieter retreat to catch up with friends and have a snack or meal even though we loved the noisy vibe in the bars too!
Wonderful, delicous food. Was very entertained watching the talented kitchen staff working to make our meal in the open kitchen.
Seafood platter inedible. Crab was mushy. Mussels tasteless. Sent it back.
It was a very memorable lunch with excellent and accommodating staff who showed us around the hotel and up into the library after our lunch.Lovely views out across the bay, tres internationale! A must visit.
The food, ambience and setting were all great. However, service, for a Wednesday lunch was only fair. There were not enough service staff on the floor to manage the number of tables occupied. First drinks were timely, and food was delivered in a reasonable time. However, it was difficult to gain the waiters' attention to request mustard and Worcester sauce for the steaks. They were delivered finally, after a second request, as our meals were almost finished! The same also applied to ordering a second round of drinks. Coffee finally arrived after a second request. Our waiter was polite and apologetic, but overworked, and no charge was made for coffees. It makes us wonder what the service would be like when it was really busy! We will return because we are local and pleased to see the Espy back in business. Great transformation ( and rescue) of a St Kilda icon.
The best part is that you can’t get bored. Amazing music, food and environment. Many options just in one place.
We had to ask for our food three times before we got our full order (over an hour after ordering). The venue itself feels like it could be a generic chain restaurant somewhere - very soulless. It is quite loud and the staff were not particularly attentive. I was interested in checking out the new Espy but I won't be going back.
Service was great, Ray and Beth were amazing. Too noisy. Disappointing that we can’t take leftovers with us. Felt rushed and kept being reminded that we only had a 2 hour booking. We were reminded of this about 4 times within 45 minutes.
We arrived a touch early and were promptly seated at out table. The waiter was efficient and prompt as well as courteous. Once our entire party had arrived we ordered our food which arrived at that perfect time, between drinks. Which by the way were swiftly attended to. Even the cocktail was enjoyed. I highly recommend this to people looking for a cool venue with great service and food
It was great food and wonderful service and the atmosphere was great , staff was friendly and very helpful, I would come again to the restaurant
We ordered the squid.. This was very chewy and definitely overcooked.. The side dish of roast vegetables was fine. We were in a hurry and would've sent the squid back had we had time. The service was good.
Excellent wait staff and very good food prepared exactly as requested.
Went to meet old friends for lunch. We finally left at around 8.30 after being relocated upstairs to the cocktail bar by your awesome staff. Four oldies had an absolutely great experience.
Hi Chris, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this great review for us! We are so glad you had a great time dining in The Espy Kitchen and hope to see you again soon. Thanks, The Espy Crew.
We arrived promptly at 12.15 pm and it was explained that the smaller shared plates would come out first and the mains later so if someone wanted something small to eat then they would have eaten theirs by the time the larger meals arrived for everyone else. The 5 of us chose one small dish to share first and all ordered a main. We did this within 15 mins of arriving. At 1.45pm our mains finally arrived and by this time our lovely waitress KG had apologised copious times and offered us a round of drinks. Our order must have got lost. While I enjoyed my meal I can’t say it was value for money and I’m not a big eater by any means. All in all it wasn’t a great experience and disappointing for a birthday lunch. I felt sorry for the waiting staff who had to smooth things over for the incompetence of the kitchen staff.
We had an awesome lunch, the staff were lovely, food was delicious and the room had a really great vibe. We will definitely be back and I would absolutely recommend others to go.
We had a table for 10 in a great little alcove away from the crowds. However, we had a freezing cold draft over the whole table and we had to keep our coats on for our entire meal. The service was exceptional and very friendly. The feed me menu was mostly delicious and plentiful however the Brussel sprouts were very un palatable with a very strong anchovy flavour through them.
Very disappointing. Espy Kitchen cold, dull lighting for the middle of the day and soulless. Friendly staff but uninspiring menu, reinforced when food arrived.
Just loved it our waitress was lovely and knew the history of the place very well. Food was great and plenty of it without being too much. It is so beautiful since its makeover just love it and really glad it's just down the road.
If you knew the famous "Espy" Hotel in days gone by, you will be aware that the reincarnation of it is a very different place indeed. However, if you suspend your feelings about the old Espy, you may still find an experience at the new version pleasant (much of the time, if you want actually to have a conversation over the noise, you'll have to choose where you sit or stand wisely). In the Espy Kitchen, the surrounds are elegantly casual and the staff are always attentive and intelligent. The mixed drinks are very good, and although I did not order from the wine list, I seem to recall it looked quite good. The food I think needs some attention. Dishes seem somewhat thrown together out of pre-prepared elements. Certainly, the reality is that things will be reheated but this can be done successfully. A cauliflower side dish was under-reheated and had the feel of being whipped out of the fridge and just dressed up a bit for the table. Ingredients shared in common across various dishes also adds to the feeling that the elements of menu and preparation savings could be 'disguised' a bit more successfully. Unfortunately, places need to be aware not to be a victim of their own success, and the re-opened Esplanade Hotel is absolute overrun with popularity; it will be interesting to see how successfully they keep an eye on quality.
We had a fantastic meal, the hostess was extremely accommodating.
We will be back
Staff really attentive though were a bit over zealous in clearing before we even finished!
It was disappointing to be charged for another tables drinks when we received our bill so overall a little disappointed
Should I have to admit, I am not a hardcore metallica fan? So, I was a bit disturbed by the choice and loudness of the music, but nobody else seemed to bother and it was Friday night!
I love the fact that the kitchen is open so you see how the food is prepared. For my taste a bit too much olive oil and you know what? My partner loved it.
The authentic waiters&waitresses were very helpful and so thank you for your enthusiasm.
We will come back : )
