The Cellar Door

Modern European
This restaurant is truly a 'blink and you'll miss it' establishment, tucked away on the main street to the cathedral. The steep entrance leads down to a deceptively open space with floor to ceiling windows providing extensive views of the river and the restaurant's rear garden in which produce is grown for the dishes available. Some of the original 13th century stonework is still visible throughout the building.
There are multiple rooms and floors to provide options for outdoor dining, private dining and larger group bookings.
The food is designed to match the relaxed dining environment, with the main focus on the use of seasonal and local produce, with menus changing monthly to reflect the freshest produce available. A 2 and 3 course set menu is available on a lunchtime and presents the opportunity for extremely good value for money, along with an a la carte menu running all day. Perfect for special occasions as well as regular relaxed dining.

Lovely setting. Fabulous and attentive staff however the beef on the Sunday lunch was very rare and under cooked

A lovely evening on a quick trip to Durham. Food delicious, staff extremely helpful, table looking out over the river with a heater keeping us lovely and warm. We hope to return one day.

Due to the adverse weather I was slightly hesitant about going ahead with the booking but I’m so glad I did.

The food was cooked beautifully, and the staff were very accommodating. The outdoor seating was sheltered and heated so I really had no issue with eating outside (even in the rain).

I would definitely recommend.

Probably the best Sunday dinner I’ve ever had. Really good quality food, big portions (Yorkie pud was massive) and good value for money. Waitress (young girl) was very attentive, very polite and gave excellent service. Also, a very nice view and the heaters, along with the cover, made sure we were warm and dry! Only negative was drinks menu is a bit restrictive. It tries to be too pretentious. However, it was very good overall, a lovely experience and will 100% be back. Cheers, lads.

We had a fabulous time celebrating our daughters 18th birthday , great outdoor dining experience. Heaters and throws provided and a lovely view over the river.

Our food was amazing and also catered well for vegan. Lovely surprise desert for our daughter at the end.

Staff very friendly.

Would definitely recommend and we will be returning soon.

The food was exquisite. We ordered a few intriguing dishes and the flavours and textures were beautifully balanced. Also had the roast dinner which was hearty in portion and each element a dish in it's own right.
Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the beers and was clearly passionate about his job. Lovely to see. Excited to come back soon. One of our favourite places in Durham and definitely recommend a visit if you've not already been.

Lovely meal at The Cellar Door with my husband. Great service, lovely food and nice ambience. The blankets and heaters were a welcomed touch due to dining outdoors because of COVID restrictions. The prices are top end so we would only eat here for special occasions but the food and wine were very nice.

Sunday lunch.

Lovely views watching the leisure boats being rowed with a broad mix of skills. The terraces were shaded in the afternoon but the river and Elvet bridge were in full sunshine.

Quite an awkward layout involving a spiral staircase to get below the the top-level. All the drinks are ferried down a lot of steps, including the spiral staircase. Obviously this geography impacts speed of service slightly, but not excessively.

The kitchen is at a level lower, so slightly less distance for the food to travel.

I had the lamb, but heard appreciative comments around me about all the food. My starter was the asparagus with poached eggs, hollandaise and hazelnuts, which was unusual and delicious.

Also really excellent beer and wine.

It was quite cool outside. They have Infra Red heaters and provide blankets and I had taken my warmest fleece.

I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and it was a novelty to see the river views. I will definitely be going again before the next stage of reopening.

Sunday lunch at the Cellar Door was great. Decent sized portions, including a Yorkshire pudding literally the size of my head. The social distancing and other covid-related things were on point - it felt very safe. The heat lamp for each table was a nice touch!

Menu was excellent, catering for the party of both meat eaters and vegans. Seitan wellington was a sensation. It was my birthday and the kitchen sent a lovely complimentary plate with a Happy birthday chocolate surprise!
Great service as ever the food is such a high standard , the sun was shining and the view of the river was beautiful

It was too cold outside in the table area and there wasn't any arrangement for heating available.
Staff was nice and friendly but one of them need to be present at the table area in order assist customers.

Superbly cooked and presented food, great wine list and knowledgable table service.

Decor is a bit flat - a few deep velvets and a bit of art wouldn’t go a miss.

We will definitely return.

We had a lovely Sunday lunch. Food was very good but the ambiance let’s it down. There is no warmth nor is it cosy. Walls painted a very pale cool blue and peculiar bird wallpaper. It has a beautiful outside space but the restart itself could do with a warm colour on the walls, atmospheric lighting, candles and flowers on the tables and some artwork on the walls. Go here for a nice meal but not for a romantic dinner.

Visited for Sunday lunch and apart from the fatty lamb everything was good, three courses for under £20 is very fair. Ideally it’s probably best to be on the main floor as your a little out of it next to the kitchen, but we’ll definitely try again. Also the biggest Yorkshire puddings I’ve ever seen.

Super value for money fine dining Sunday lunch. The biggest Yorkshire puddings ever seen. We were downstairs in the “cellar” bit..... perfectly ok but I think next time (and there definitely will be a next time!) we’ll ask to be seated overlooking the river on the middle floor.
