The Cellar Door
There are multiple rooms and floors to provide options for outdoor dining, private dining and larger group bookings.
The food is designed to match the relaxed dining environment, with the main focus on the use of seasonal and local produce, with menus changing monthly to reflect the freshest produce available. A 2 and 3 course set menu is available on a lunchtime and presents the opportunity for extremely good value for money, along with an a la carte menu running all day. Perfect for special occasions as well as regular relaxed dining.
Food was delicious! The biggest Yorkshire pudding I have ever seen. Highly recommend
We were shown to our table and ordered shortly after our arrival. However we waited 40 minutes for sunday lunch and in the end had to ask for waitress to check on our food. It did arrive shortly after. The restaurant wasn't full and had very little atmosphere. I don't remember any music or chatter. It left me feeling something was missing. The food was good , roast lamb and veg but we were put off ordering dessert because of the time it had taken to receive our mains. I didnt have the patience or time to wait another 30 minutes or more. It was difficult to catch the attention of waiting staff and we ended up having to go to them to pay the bill. No thank you or see you later as we left. Not the friendliest of places
Excellent food and service as usual, certainly recommend it!!
Lovely restaurant, maybe a little too modern interior considering its location. Very good food, good wine selection and courteous service.
The service we received was great, friendly and efficient.
The food superb,
Really high quality food with excellent table service. A lovely evening for our whole family.
My wife and I had lunch here on Saturday 13th June. The service was attentive and friendly and the food and wine were excellent. We sat outside on the balcony with lovely views of the river. I wouldn’t hesitate to return.
Excellent service and quality as ways. Our server (Jasmine) was also superb and very knowledgeable answering any questions about the menu or wine list. Can't wait to visit again.
Lovely food again, some staff better than others to our main waitress was very good.
This is our third visit and will use again.
Fantastic food and the lunch menu was such great value. My dessert (espresso cake) was a bit disappointing as it was dry and the menu was unclear what exactly the desserts were, but the service and rest of the meal made up for it.
. Pleasant staff. Slow service. A long time waiting for courses. Onion rings and chips quite hard and overcooked. Extremely small portions of both the mackerel starter and the trout main. All delicious
The best fine dining restaurant in Durham. Amazing service and food.
Loved the whole experience. We were lucky with the weather so could enjoy the dining area outside. The food was delicious and the service great. The only negative thing was the level of noise coming from the extractor ...
We had Sunday Dinner for two. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. Will definitely make a return visit.
We dined on a Sunday lunchtime and had starters and mains including mackerel with rhubarb and chicken parfait which were both lovely we then had a beef and a lamb roast dinner which were really nice. The service was attentive and you felt safe with the COVID precautions that they had in place the tables were spaced nicely. We have ate in the Cellar door many times and are glad to see them back open serving quality food.
The Cellar Door is highly recommended. The food, service and ambience were all exceptional and the view from our table on the upper deck was magnificent.
An excellent evening. Service was very friendly and efficient. Elle was really good. Food was delicious. We all had three courses and can particularly recommend the venison and the lamb, but everything was really good. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.
Had a lovely lunch by the river. Food and wine were delicious and our server Katie was very welcoming and helpful. Overall we had a fabulous and very reasonably priced, afternoon. Looking forward to our next visit.
Really good food and the staff were so friendly and helpful.
Food was incredible but service let it down - in the restaurant for 2 hours and only had two courses and 1 drink. Staff unresponsive or proactive to our needs, no check backs etc. Sat out in the sun without staff asking if we needed more water or the umbrella up. Would come back as the food was worth it but staff could use some more training
Asked for a table on balcony when booking on open table . This was not acknowledged when we went in. She attempted to seat us indoors. I stated that the request was sitting on balcony. She asked us to take a seat in bar until she asked the manager. She arranged a table on the balcony for us. We had a 3 course meal, which was very nice. The paint on the tables was flaking off. I felt this lowered the standard of the restaurant. Overall we did enjoy the meal and would definitely go back.
As always, good value.
Had a lovely experience at the Cellar Door. Would definitely go back when I’m Durham! Worth paying a visit to anyone in the area. Lovely setting, staff and food! Cheese Soufflé one of the best!
Lovely meal especially the raspberry chocolate pudding which was amazing.
Excellent from start to finish. A warm and friendly welcome, attentive service, delicious wine and food. Highly recommneded
Excellent evening. Catching up with son at Uni. Booked well in advance. Felt very covid secure. Service staff were excellent. Gap between starter and main was a little stretched but other than that it was superb
Amazing as always - will be back soon.
The view really helps with the perfection!
Lovely location, great cocktails, delicious food and helpful, friendly staff.
Very disappointed with the quality of service. Got there a little early so was asked to sit in the waiting area which wasn't a problem. No one bothered to ask either of us or another couple waiting if we would like a drink.
We got seated and again had to wait 15 minutes for a waitress to ask for drinks. We gave her the drinks and food order, waited an hour for the starter and then waited another 45 minutes for mains
We had to ask where our food was, there was no explanation or apology. Very poor customer service.
The food was mediocre, we chose from the al a carte menu rather than the lunch time and expected it to be top notch. How disappointed I was after ordering the stonefish, the spinach still had grit in it and the sauce was tasteless. My wife ordered the lamb which came stone cold. Again told the waitresses but simply got 'oh right'. Absolutely shocking
We waited over an hour for our starter to come... After having to ask why we were waiting. We had the vegetarian /vegan options which looked really nice but failed to deliver on flavour. My husband and I left very disappointed and still hungry.
Gorgeous as always
Second visit, lovely food. Friendly staff. Lunch menu great value. Will be back.
Excellent service and delicious food in a delightful setting.
A 8.30 reservation and were served our main courses at 10.10 I realise they were busy but it is in acceptable to wait 1 hour 40 minutes to be served a main course
Our order was placed at 8.40 as we arrived and were seated 15 minutes early so again this is totally unacceptable
The food was delicious especially the thai style fishcakes. What was not so good was the setting. We were on a table on the lower floor which was dimly lit and no river views.
Gorgeous food, and great service. Quite loud at times.
Excellent!!! Well worth it
Beef Wellington slightly over done but still lovely
Will definitely be back
We thoroughly enjoyed our food. All courses were exceptional. Our server was extremely pleasant, polite and knowledgable. Great afternoon.
Fantastic Sunday lunch! And brilliant service. Overall great experience and will definitely be returning.
Absolutely brilliant food and service. Booked on line and did not realise until day that we would be on the balcony at 8.45pm at night 22 May
There were heaters but not one per table.
