The Butternut Tree
A thoughtfully designed open kitchen allows guests to be part of the action. There are no walls, enabling discovery of Chef Downey’s style, both as a chef and a leader in the kitchen.
The Butternut Tree focuses on replacing global sources of sweet, sour, bitter, and salty with unique ingredients from our home and native land. From budding foodies to seasoned supporters of local provisions and purveyors, this is the place where guests can experience the unexpected.
An excellent meal! Will definitely be back at some point.
Delicious locally-sourced fare. They were kind enough to accommodate my vegan daughter so that our whole family could experience the tasting menu. If you don’t do the tasting menu, do make sure to have the cabbage and the chiffon cake.
Would give the service more than 5 stars if I could. Adam was an excellent server, friendly and attentive. My younger daughter loved her birthday dinner.
We’ll be back!
Food was amazing, service was fantastic, the view and over all ambience is very nice. Portions are small for the price but everything tastes incredible. Will be back for sure.
Fancy food. Neat experience. Great views. Service was excellent
The service was exceptional. Server was extremely knowledgeable about the food and where it was sourced and gave great advice for our picky wine drinkers. Loved the view and the food was excellent! Definitely recommend this as a place to go for a special evening.
The food was delicious! There aren't very many restaurants that have a vegetarian/vegan tasting menu, but the butternut tree does and it blew me away! The staff there are really friendly and really know their stuff! I'd highly recommend this restaurant!
Food was very good. Services was great. Great view. We were there at sunset and it was great to watch. Both of our meals were a nice balance of unique and comfortable. Very well balanced. The price was steep, but we didn’t feel like we had been charged more than it was worth. Not to say there aren’t places for similar quality that is less expensive, but that for us, the food was worth it.
I would recommend.
We don’t often take pictures of our food because pictures don’t taste too good, but trust me presentation was also great.
My girlfriend and I spent Valentine's day there and I cannot put into words how much we enjoyed this restaurant and experience. It was our first valentine's day together and the service and food made it extremely memorable. The host was extremely kind and welcoming while she took our jackets, informed us our table was getting ready. As we awaited our table we sat at the bar with knowledgeable, friendly, and professional bar tenders. We then were seated at our table with a beautiful view of the high level area with massive windows to enjoy the view. Seating was spread out evenly to give each table their own space and dining experience. Our server Tim was an absolute pleasure and an extremely rare service was enjoyed. He made us feel special, appreciated and welcomed. We were not rushed, he was extremely knowledgeable and proud of the food he served. He had a lot of pride in what he does and was the true representation of true hospitality. The food itself was next level. Using locally sourced ingredients the chefs did a remarkable job creating visual masterpieces and flavors that tantalized our palates. We will definitely recommend this restaurant to all our friends and family. My girlfriend is not a vegetarian but thoroughly enjoyed her meal and all the flavors so much that she cleaned her plate fully. Thank you again for this unbelievable experience. Definitely a gem in our city.
We have been coming here the past year and a half, and the food seems to always be better than the last. The food is easily the best in Edmonton, and gives you the opportunity to try a unique Canadian-inspired menu that you would not ordinary try.
Cannot day enough great things about the staff. They are knowledgeable and share the same passion for food. Recently, we had Adam, who was great!
Definitely will be coming back!
The whole experience was wonderful. This is our third time there and will return in the future.
Lovely restaurant with a unique local menu and great service. Pricey but well worth it for a special birthday dinner.
For sure the best restaurant in Edmonton I will recommend Its pricey, but worth it!
Also it's the first restaurant you can talk to each other without the screaming!
The creative food offerings with wine pairings are phenomenal. The service is prompt and friendly and their knowledge is always on point. The chef and his team are welcoming and engaging with guests, and you can tell they love what they do. One of my favorite spots!
Tasting menu was not as good as at previous occasions, though I am sure that depends on your tastes too. Very fish heavy this time. No red wine pairing, except with the cheese course. Took our server more than 10 mins to get to us for which they made up by paying for our cocktails, which were very nice. We will be back, because this feels like an aberration to me.
excellent, excellent service, knowledgeable waiter, food delicious
We fully enjoyed our second visit to this establishment, with a significant gap between visits. The Chef’s creations were dynamic and food forward. We were a little surprised about the menu pricing. Expect Entrees in the $50 range
Outstanding experience. Food was absolutely delicious, service was exceptional and the ambiance superb.
Exceptional service and amazing food. The Butternut Tree never disappoints, and remains my go-to when I'm in Edmonton.
The appetizer we ordered was shrimp balls, it tasted exactly like a pancake with maybe a scant amount of any shrimp, for $17 the value was not even close to being there, the only good thing was the dip which overpowered the breakfast/pancake taste.
Elk dish was ok but the potatoes and carrot it came with was very plain and could of used a bit more taste/sauce.
Rabbit was not great, the rabbit legs were a bit dry and breaded balls tasted old and were hard and dried out, the kale tasted a tad burnt and very salty. There was also an orange sauce that I found too sweet and did not suit the meal well.
We advised the waiter of our expectations with the appetizer not being met and nothing was done to compensate for it.
Winter scenery was great. All Canadian cuisine was a huge plus for us
Chef Scott Downey's creativity in the kitchen was well appreciated. Celeriac dumplings - who knew? Cauliflower slow roasted for more than 10 hours? Who comes up with this? The food was excellent and the flavours a joy to experience. You do pay for it, though. The only slight slip up was the appetizer arriving a little cooler than it should have. The size of the desert was a bit of a disappointment as well - it was so good, more of it would have been better.
Food, presentation and service was delightful.
Amazing! My favourite restaurant in the city.
Exquisite food and service !
Food was beautiful, interesting and delicious. Great canadian concept done with so much creativity!
Beautiful room, creative cocktails, and an all Canadian sourced menu. Food was good, but not great for the price, and the menu caters to a more adventurous palate (e.g., rabbit, beef tongue, sweetbreads), meaning there are not a lot of options for those with more conservative tastes. Glad we tried it, but for the high price point, it didn’t quite live up to expectations.
The food quality was superb and it was all beautifully presented. This restaurant is definitely worth a splurge. That said, given its pricing, it is likely to be a place for special nights rather than a regular spot for a dinner out.
We finally got a babysitter. And I received a recommendation from a chef at Chartier for The butternut tree. So we checked it out and were very impressed
The menu was exploratory. The food was fantastic and the plating was resplendent!!! Our waiter Tim was wonderful and his knowledge was incredible
Only average food for the price. We had been there before and the food was much better.
I would recommend the Butternut Tree because some of the food was awesome. The atmosphere is nice and the views are lovely. I enjoy that everything is Canadian sourced. I think that is great. The last time we were there we had a great server and this one was awkward and subpar. Our appetizers this time around were great but our mains were just alright which for the money doesn’t feel good enough. It’s not cheap. Don’t get the rabbit. Personal opinion of course.
Service was fantastic, nice young man very knowledgeable. The food was very good, we had the chance to try new flavors and delicious products from Canada! We expected a tiny bit more in our dish regarding the appetizers in their tasting menu. I wouldn't recommend to seat next to the windows cross their entrance during winter, you can feel the cold coming from the main hall/entrance (doors opening/closing). Atmosphere is great, quiet Chic place!
What a beautiful evening. Perfect food, gorgeous cocktails, amazing wine and the best service I’ve ever had anywhere. Can’t wait to come back.
Fantastic experience ! The food, concept, and service were extraordinary
Outstanding chef! Best in Alberta. A bit expensive but worth it.
Food was ok, I wouldn't say anything was amazing. Using only Canadian ingredients seems like a neat twist, but practically it severely limits the flavors and options. Rather bland food, especially for the price.
We had a great experience at the Butternut Tree. Our server was so informative and passionate about food. We went on a Thursday night for a special occasion and it was nice and quiet and we didn’t feel rushed at all. Definitely will recommend to others.
Great location and view. Service was among the best in the city. Food was creative, but we found it bland.
The butternut tree has been open for a little more than two years. It’s a ‘nice to try’ restaurant where the food is good but not superb, though the ambiance and service makes up for what the palate lacks.
We tried almost everything on the menu, and even though the presentation and ingredients are top notch, ever dish left something to be desired in terms of flavor. Some dishes were overwhelmed with different textures and flavors, all seemingly vying for attention but never coalescing into a whole. Other dishes simply lacked flavor altogether.
The service however is second to none, and the atmosphere is also excellent for a quiet upscale dinner or for a special occasion.
All in all, the value is lacking. However it’s certainly worth a try, and you can make the final decision yourself of whether or not you’d return.
The food was great. The servings were creative and the atmosphere was great
