Black Squirrel Manhattan

East Coast Oysters
Pickle juice mignonette, spicy cocktail, lemon
Fish & Chips
Fuller's batter, creamy shallot sauce, malt vinaigrette
Great entrees. Apps were tasty. The tikka masala and cottage pie were stars. Loved the skrittywide- rusty nail and bombardier are a great pairing but also good solo. This brings the citywide concept to a new level. Unfortunately it hampers experiencing the wide array of cocktail options which are also tops.
Love this place.
New to me. Nice. Good food and service. A little tight tho space wise
Food was delicious and the server was very helpful.
Always excellent. Great food and drinks. Wonderful addition to the neighborhood.
Fish and chips good but not remarkable (sorry Craig LeBan). Pear cider very good. No desserts. Hostess and server were great. Frigid air continually blew into small front room as the door opened time after time. They desperately need an anteroom enclosure in winter.
We were disappointed in our experience as the reviews were mostly very good. The restaurant decor was great but it was very cold. We had to keep our coats on as did many of the diners around us. I checked in with our waiter and the temp improved slightly after a bit, but was still chilly.
The food was very average. We ordered the cheese board and duck meatballs as appetizers. The cheese was fine but the duck meatballs did not look or taste like duck. My husband and our friend our both trained chefs and each said something.
My husband had the fish and chips which he said were ok. Our friend and I had the cottage pie which had a nice flavor, however the menu said it was made with short ribs, but it was tiny cubes of meat instead of pulled meat. I realize that sometimes restaurants have to substitute, but customers should be made aware while ordering.
On a positive note, our waiter, Gordon, was very good.
We live in WChester which is an hour with 76 traffic so will not be returning as not worth the drive.
Really good experience. Well
I’ve never been a fan of British “cuisine.”
But a good review by Craig LaBan of the Inquirer, and seeing oysters at the top of the menu, and we gave it a try.
The brine for the dirty vodka martini is infused with herbs, which created a neat flavor.
The pickle mignonette for the oysters is a nice touch but could use a little more liquid.
And I’m not a fan of fish and chips, but when in Rome? The fish was tasty and not heavily battered. And the fries are worth the calories.
All in all, I’ll go back and try the dinner menu, which doesn’t seem much different from the lunch menu. And we’ll get a table upstairs for a cozier setting.
Great soups! Authentic British pub. KItschy. Fun. Good staff
Food and drinks were delicious. Service was outstanding even though it was a busy night, prompt and very pleasant.
Even though we were outside there was a very noisy table next to us but that seemed like an unavoidable fluke.
Definitely plan to return
Thought we would try something new but it wasn't great. The room were seated in was very cold and we were told the heat was turned up to 75. The food was average, I had fish and chips, and expensive for what is was, $23. I would not recommended this restaurant.
Always great food and service here.
Excellent service and food!
Website says provide vaccine card for indoor dining but no one had to show proof. This is a deal breaker for some people in pandemic times. Otherwise the place was good
Never disappoints. Craft cocktails, Well executed menu keeps coming back
We sat outside on a chilly night, but the heaters kept us toasty. We had a couple pints and the fish and chips. Both were sooo good. But...out glasses sat empty way too long as our server didn’t come back outside for a long while. There was only one other table outside, right next to us, who had a different server that was super attentive and out so many times! We were so jealous! When our server finally came out, we ordered more drinks and she quickly whisked away our plates and went inside...only problem, we weren’t done! We were waiting for more drinks to enjoy our meal! At $23, I’d like to finish my meal! She didn’t even ask and to be honest, it happened so quickly, we couldn’t even stop her. Ugggg.
It was ages before we saw the server again and at that point we just wanted to leave.
The food was incredible, none of our party could easily decide between all the items. Drinks were creative and delicious. Thanks!
We were pleasantly surprised at how good the food was! My husband had the roast beef sandwich. His mother’s roast beef is pretty popular. The Black Squirrel’s is better! The horseradish aioli on the side was *chef’s kiss*. I had the Benedict Arnold, which is basically Egg’s Benedict but with bubble & squeak (think potato pancake-ish) instead of your usual English muffin. The ambiance was great, our server was sweet, all in all we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, and definitely plan to return.
Brunch on a chilly Saturday on the porch, so I can’t really comment on the noise level. But the inside decor is quite charming, especially a sitting room on the 2nd floor. The wait staff was super friendly and attentive.
Love the decor/ambiance. Well described as upscale pub. Staff super friendly and helpful. Portions very generous, served piping hot. Mussels and shepherds pie great.
Pet peeve- why aren’t appetizer plates cleared before the entree is brought? Why am I expected to move plates around? Many establishments have this issue. Thanks for listening.
I’ll be back!
The drinks were great, the food was delicious and the decor was beautiful.
Very good food, eclectic ambiance. Wonderful staff and service! Third time here, consistent! I miss the branzino, but, the trout is almost as good! My husband got the toast beef sandwich & my son got the cottage pie. Both enjoyed their meals...yep, we'll be back!
This was our second dinner at Black Squirrel, and both times the food was excellent, and the service was fine without being obtrusive. A relatively small but very creative and tasty menu. We ate outside, and the porch was comfortable, with very effective propane heaters . I was surprised that the wait staff was not masked, but the restaurant requires proof of vaccination for diners who wish to eat inside, so I guess the masks are not really necessary -- except for the many stories of bogus vaccination certificates, which led us to eat outside anyway.
Great setting, good food and service. A bit overpriced. My first time there . I would go back for sure. Nice addition to the casual dining scene.
Very tasty option ms but slightly over salted appetizer and entree
Amazing food, drinks and service. Wonderful atmosphere.
Great food, great service! Definitely will be going back!
This is really a charming new place in East Falls. It is not large, and seats maybe 50 people, including the porch tables. The small bar puts out very good cocktails and the employees are charming and efficient. The menu is very interesting offering items not often seen at restaurants, as it tries to effuse the place with an aire of Brittish charm and food items. To some extent, I think the kitchen is trying to achieve a goal somewhat beyond its reach, as the food was always good, but often somewhat disappointing, having flavors that often masked the ingredients' essential flavors. (But this is often a complaint about food served in England. I will return to explore the future offerings, as I really like what the owners are trying to do.
Awesome time. Food drinks and service was phenomenal.
Wonderful atmosphere and delicious food. Waitress was attentive. We had a great time!!
Great beer and excellent service. I will return to the Black Squirrel...
What a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Food, service, atmosphere was wonderful.
The food was delicious and the cocktails were amazing.
Great little place. Inventive drinks and beers on tap and very good english and english/indian food. Really friendly wait staff. Highly recommend.
Black squirrel was a seriously elevated take on a British pub with a fantastic cocktail offering to back it up. This is among one of the best restaurants I've been to in the East Falls/Manayunk area.
I highly recommend the grilled ham & cheese that is accompanied by the best tomato bisque I’ve ever had! There was another phenomenal item that I had which is listed on the menu as a Breakfast Cup but I substituted Stateside Vodka for gin.
The warm shrimp salad was lovely, but a bit overdressed.
the cocktails are amazing- the atmosphere is so cool.
First time and will be back. Cocktails were thoughtfully crafted, we paired with each course we ordered. The duck meatballs were delectable. If you like garlic, onions caramelized for what tastes like hours to perfection and dashes of horseradish, this menu will be your happy place.
Love love this place! Good food, amazing drinks and great service
