The food and drinks were tasty, but a bit too pricey for what you received… and they don’t offer any dessert options.
Our overall experience was great! Our server was informative and catered to our needs.
Their cocktails were unique and delicious.
We would strongly recommend!
Great food and wonderful ambiance! Totally recommend the fish and chips and cottage pie!!!
The food is so good, love this place.
Great remake of the East Falls Tap Room....wouldn't recognize the place. English pub like atmo, food was very good, though a bit pricey for what it was (but what's not these days ?) Will re-dine here very soon.
New Year’s Eve. Excellent food. Great service and Rolling Stones all dinner. We’ll be back
Love the food and service in this pub. Our only quibble was the temperature. Felt like the ac was on, rather than the heat! At night this is not an issue, but it was quiet with only four tables of diners at 1pm mid week.
I really want this place to succeed. It is clear they are still getting their legs. The place was freezing and the guy behind the bar intimated that the heat had been turned off (it is late December!). The place smelled so strongly of cleaning fluid that sitting in the front room you would be overwhelmed by the smell. The music was 80s and felt very odd for the vibe. The food was decent but needs some work. Again there is potential …. It is a solid 3/5. I would wait a while before going back to see if they deal with the ambiance, cleaning fluid smell, that sort of thing. It needs a cozier vibe to be successful I think.
Always love eating at The Black Squirrel, their plates are gorgeous, their food feels like a warm hug. I love the Marta cocktail. I had the cottage pie, it was delightful. My boyfriend had the tikka masala and he said it was really good!
🐿 Black Squirrel in East Falls. So I had a birthday lunch with hubby at the Black Squirrel, contemporary British Pub Fare that feels more elevated than most other places in this category. 🧅 I got the Onion Soup with a piece of toast with rarebit on top (a dijon mustard and cheese combo)... this was just outstanding.. the sherry in the soup really took it to the next level. Hubby got the cheese board which seems a bit small portion-wise ( aren't cheese boards pretty big usually) We got the fish and chips and the tandoori wings... wings must have been made from jumbo birds since they were HUGE.... and quite delicious. 🍸 We agreed that the expertly crafted cocktails were the highlight though. They were just stellar! They did require proof of vaccination, which they had been doing since June, although the staff was unmasked. They did have outside seating and I did see heaters. I loved feeling transported with the decor, food and furnishings though! 🇬🇧
Service and servers excellent. No employees were masked! Place is small and pub-like but chairs are uncomfortable and it is cramped. Food was very good. Delicious deconstructed onion soup. Burgers were tasty, although would have been better as one large burger rather than two patties. Fries outstanding. Everything served piping hot. Wonderful selection of beers and ales!
French onion soup was unique, shrimp salad was tasty, service was good and atmosphere was quaint in this small East Falls pub. Good for casual business lunch.
Love, Love, Love! The atmosphere is lovely, the food is made with love, the servers ( in particular, August) is lovely and a love, I just LOVE everything about The Black Squirrel! This was my 5th time here... That says it all! Be back soon! Thank you, August! 🙏
Our food and drinks were really good. My wife had the Pimm's cup, which was absolutely delicious (I was envious and wanted one myself). The tandoori chicken wings were excellent. The fish and triple-fried chips were the best we've ever had (and I've lived in England before). Just need some heating and lights on downstairs.
Delicious! We will be back again. Highlights:
Pea soup, yes, get the pea soup!
Fish and chips!
This place is a gem for brunch. Perfect food + drink combination. The food, service, and ambience is amazing.
The food was delicious, cocktails were great. Outdoor setup is lovely. The server was fantastic.
Holiday celebration with friends
Our table was dirty, and it was right below an air duct. When I asked that the fan be lowered, I was told no. I had to wear my coat throughout the meal. My food was good, but it was served cold. The server was completely clueless. Besides the air/fan situation, she served our coffee in coffee cups without the little plates, making a further mess on the already dirty table.
Great dinner and awesome service. Little too cold by the front window.
Food was incredible, as were the drinks and service.
Nice pub atmosphere. We ate upstairs which had three tables and was open to the downstairs. It was quiet and we felt confortable with the distance between tables. Great waiter and the food was very good. Pea soup was excellent.
Highly recommended. Highly recommended. Highly recommended. Highly recommended. Highly recommended. Highly recommended.
Great entrees. Apps were tasty. The tikka masala and cottage pie were stars. Loved the skrittywide- rusty nail and bombardier are a great pairing but also good solo. This brings the citywide concept to a new level. Unfortunately it hampers experiencing the wide array of cocktail options which are also tops.
Love this place.
New to me. Nice. Good food and service. A little tight tho space wise
Food was delicious and the server was very helpful.
Always excellent. Great food and drinks. Wonderful addition to the neighborhood.
Fish and chips good but not remarkable (sorry Craig LeBan). Pear cider very good. No desserts. Hostess and server were great. Frigid air continually blew into small front room as the door opened time after time. They desperately need an anteroom enclosure in winter.
We were disappointed in our experience as the reviews were mostly very good. The restaurant decor was great but it was very cold. We had to keep our coats on as did many of the diners around us. I checked in with our waiter and the temp improved slightly after a bit, but was still chilly.
The food was very average. We ordered the cheese board and duck meatballs as appetizers. The cheese was fine but the duck meatballs did not look or taste like duck. My husband and our friend our both trained chefs and each said something.
My husband had the fish and chips which he said were ok. Our friend and I had the cottage pie which had a nice flavor, however the menu said it was made with short ribs, but it was tiny cubes of meat instead of pulled meat. I realize that sometimes restaurants have to substitute, but customers should be made aware while ordering.
On a positive note, our waiter, Gordon, was very good.
We live in WChester which is an hour with 76 traffic so will not be returning as not worth the drive.
Really good experience. Well
I’ve never been a fan of British “cuisine.”
But a good review by Craig LaBan of the Inquirer, and seeing oysters at the top of the menu, and we gave it a try.
The brine for the dirty vodka martini is infused with herbs, which created a neat flavor.
The pickle mignonette for the oysters is a nice touch but could use a little more liquid.
And I’m not a fan of fish and chips, but when in Rome? The fish was tasty and not heavily battered. And the fries are worth the calories.
All in all, I’ll go back and try the dinner menu, which doesn’t seem much different from the lunch menu. And we’ll get a table upstairs for a cozier setting.
Great soups! Authentic British pub. KItschy. Fun. Good staff
Food and drinks were delicious. Service was outstanding even though it was a busy night, prompt and very pleasant.
Even though we were outside there was a very noisy table next to us but that seemed like an unavoidable fluke.
Definitely plan to return
Nice cozy spot. Will go back as there are more items I want to try. Just wish they had dessert.
Thought we would try something new but it wasn't great. The room were seated in was very cold and we were told the heat was turned up to 75. The food was average, I had fish and chips, and expensive for what is was, $23. I would not recommended this restaurant.
Always great food and service here.
Excellent service and food!
Website says provide vaccine card for indoor dining but no one had to show proof. This is a deal breaker for some people in pandemic times. Otherwise the place was good
Never disappoints. Craft cocktails, Well executed menu keeps coming back
We sat outside on a chilly night, but the heaters kept us toasty. We had a couple pints and the fish and chips. Both were sooo good. But...out glasses sat empty way too long as our server didn’t come back outside for a long while. There was only one other table outside, right next to us, who had a different server that was super attentive and out so many times! We were so jealous! When our server finally came out, we ordered more drinks and she quickly whisked away our plates and went inside...only problem, we weren’t done! We were waiting for more drinks to enjoy our meal! At $23, I’d like to finish my meal! She didn’t even ask and to be honest, it happened so quickly, we couldn’t even stop her. Ugggg.
It was ages before we saw the server again and at that point we just wanted to leave.
